  • Effective pesticide applications are needed to assure the quality and economic competitiveness of fruit production and lower the risk of spray drift. Experimental studies have shown that better spray coverage and less driftability require an understanding of the transport of spray droplets within turbulent airflows in the orchard and the interaction between droplet dynamics and tree canopies. This study developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict pesticide flows in the orchard and spray drift discharged from an air-assisted orchard sprayer. The model represented the transport of spray droplets as well as droplets captured by tree canopies, which were modeled as a conical porous model and branched tree model. Validation of the CFD model was accomplished by comparing the CFD results with field measurements. Spray depositions inside tree canopies and at off-target locations were in good agreement with the measurements. The resulting data presented that 38.6%~42.3% of the sprayed droplets were delivered to the tree canopies while 13.6%~20.1% were drifted out of the orchard, part of them reached farther than 200 m from the orchard. The study demonstrates that CFD model can be used to evaluate spray application performance and spray drift potential.

  • A field experiment was conducted at Cheju from early March 1998 to early March 1999 to evaluate the effects of foliar applied urea on leaf N content and N recovery in satsuma mandarins (Citrus unshiu Marc.). Seven years old 'Okitsu Wase' trees received foliar spray of urea (22 or 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$) or soil application of urea (86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$). 56% of N was applied in spring, 11% in summer and 33% in fall. There were seven trees per N treatment and two trees per N treatment received $^{15}N$-labeled urea in spring and summer to determine N recovery. There were no differences between the treatments for fruit yield and its quality. Nitrogen content of spring flush leaf blades up to early September was greater for trees received foliar spray comparing with soil application but was not greatly affected by any treatment after mid-November. The recovery of fertilizer N in various parts of trees receiving foliar spray of 22 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$ was greatest, followed by receiving foliar spray of 43 g N and soil application of 86 g N. The recovery of fertilizer N in tree was 29.2 and 17.7% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively and 8.0% for soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The recovery of fertilizer N in the upper 40 cm of soil was 50.3, 45.6, and 51.8% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, and soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$ respectively. The total (tree, fallen leaves, winter weeds, and soil) recovery of fertilizer N was 81.8, 65.1, and 60.6% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, and soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively.

  • An experimental variable rate nursery sprayer was developed to adjust application rates for canopy volume in real time. The sprayer consisted of two vertical booms integrated with ultrasonic sensors, and variable rate nozzles coupled with pulse width modulation (PMW) based solenoid valves. A custom-designed microcontroller instructed the sensors to detect canopy size and occurrence and then controlled nozzles to achieve variable application rates. A spray delivery system, which consisted of diaphragm pump, pressure regulator and 4-cycle gasoline engine, offered the spray discharge function. Spray delay time, time adjustment in spray trigger for the leading distance of the sensor, was measured with a high-speed camera, and it was from 50 to 140 ms earlier than the desired time (398 ms) at 3.2 km/h under indoor conditions. Consequently, the sprayer triggered 4.5 to 12.5 cm prior to detected targets. Duty cycles of the sprayer were from 20 to 34 ms for senor-to-canopy (STC) distance from 0.30 to 0.76 m. Outdoor test confirmed that the nozzles were triggered from 290 to 380 ms after detecting tree canopy at 3.2 km/h. The spray rate of the new sprayer was 58.4 to 85.2% of the constant application rate (935 L/ha). Spray coverage was collected at four areas of evergreen canopy by water sensitive papers (WSP), and ranged from 1.9 to 41.1% and 1.8 to 34.7% for variable and constant rate applications, respectively. One WSP area had significant (P < 0.05) difference in mean spray coverage between two application conditions.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of tree height on light transmission, spray penetration, tree growth performance, fruit quality attributes, and labor productivity in the slender-spindle system of 'Hongro'/M.9 apple trees. With increasing tree height, the light penetration into the internal parts of the canopy decreased, especially in the lower canopy. Leaf area index (LAI) increased with increasing tree height, thereby leading to a reduction in the extent of spray penetration into the interior of the canopy. With increasing tree height, shoot growth was more vigorous but produced slender shoots in the upper canopy compared to the lower canopy. Although the soluble solid content and coloration of fruit decreased, there was no difference in fruit firmness and acidity. In addition, the number of final fruit set increased, although the production of large fruit (> 305 g) decreased. The increase in tree height also significantly increased the labor required for practices such as thinning of flowers and fruits, pruning, and harvesting. Nevertheless, this problem of increased in labor input in taller trees would was eased by use of a mechanical lift. Utilizing a lift for thinning the flowers of trees 4.5 m in height saved 14.6 min per tree, compared to the use of ladder. Therefore, it is highly considerable that in order to enhance light transmission and fruit coloration, light conditions should be improved in the internal tree canopy of slender-spindle systems.

  • With desires for safe food, there is growing concern that pesticide spray drift will expose people, plants, and the environment to pesticide residue and potential negative effects thereof. For highly efficient, safe spray application, technologies for measuring the spray drift should be developed and improved with some urgency. This study investigated the applicability of two optical particle counters (OPCs), which are mostly used to measure airborne particle mass concentration, for measurement of airborne pesticide spray drift. Experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory and an ash tree orchard to evaluate the handiness and accuracy of two OPCs, OPC 1 and OPC 2. The experimental results indicated that the OPC 1 was better applicable to the measurement of spray drift in the field while the use of the OPC 2 was limited due to its narrow range of measurable droplet sizes. The readings of the OPC 1 produced highly accurate results ($R^2=0.9637$) compared to the actual spray drift. For better application of OPCs, this study suggests the OPCs should be positioned properly to inhale spray droplets of the appropriate size and concentration.

  • Farmers using conventional sprayer system are exposed to pesticide poisoning and soil pollution due to pesticide application. In order to reduce this problem, the effective sprayer system is required. In this paper, we propose development of intelligent sprayer system using tree recognition. This intelligent sprayer system consists of an image recognition module, a remote control, a sprayer system, an air blower, and a control module. It is possible to spray pesticides automatically and manually through remote control using cameras and controls. We conducted a total of four experiments in tree recognition experiment, test of attachment and water sensitive papers, measurement of pesticide consumption, and measurement of worker exposure. The test results showed that the consumption of pesticides could be reduced while giving the same effect as conventional controls.

  • The dyeing of silk fabric with chinese scholar tree extract was investigated. The colorant was extracted with distilled water, and concentrated under reduced pressure, and, finally spray-dried. The optimum temperature and dyeing time for the dyeing of silk with the scholar tree extract was $60^\circ{C}$ and 60 minutes respectively. In mordant dyeing, pre-mordanting method was most effective for color yield, and 1~2 % of mordant concentration was acceptable. Fastness of the dyed silk fabric to laundering and rubbing was shown to be good, but fastness to light, dry cleaning, and perspiration were varied with used mordants.
