This study was carried out to develop new cultivars of Z. serrata showing yellow fall leaf. Z. serrata which had yellow fall leaves were selected and then examined for contents of leaf anthocyanin and chlorophyll. In addition, for the progeny test, selected trees were grafted. Of 21 trees having yellow autumn leaves, three individuals, 'S-4', 'S-14', and 'J-32' were finally selected. They contained high level of anthocyanin with higher level in the leaves. Once developed, the yellow color remained till late autumn. Grafted plants of the selected strains showed high grafting efficiency and vigorous growth. Yellow foliage color were found to be maintained in the grafted trees. The tree 'S-4' was 7 m tall and 6 m in crown width, whereas 'S-14' and 'J-32' were 6 m tall and 4m in crown width. The soil pH of the survey sites ranged from 5.9 to 7.24. However, other soil characteristics did not show much difference among the sites with regard to inorganic nutrients including $N,\;P_2O_5,\,CEC,\,K^+,\,Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg.^{2+}$ 'S-4', 'S-14', and 'J-32' clonal lines developing yellow fall leaf were selected as new cultivars and propagated by grafting.
Allelopathic effects of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was evaluated through germination tests using 13 different species including R. pseudoacacia itself. The water extract from leaf or root of R. pseudoacacia was separately tested. Seed germination of several species was inhibited in the presence of leaf or root extract, although the level of germination was in a wide range depending on the species. Seed germination of R. pseudoacacia was suppressed by 30 % in its leaf extract. Among tested tree species, Hibiscus syriacus and Alnus frma showed significantly inhibited germination in the root extracts whereas Thuja orientalis exhibited germination inhibition in the leaf extract. HPLC was carried out to identify allelochemicals in extracts of leaf and root using eight authentic phenolic compounds that are known to be responsible for allelopathy. The major phenolic compounds occupying about 40 % of total phenolic acids were gentisic acid in leaves and vanillic acid and syringic acid in roots. The leaves contained 7 times more phenolic acids than the roots. Among 8 tested phenolic compounds vanillin was detected only in roots and coumaric acid in leaves. Consequently, 3 out of 13 species showed significantly inhibited germination due to leaf or root extract. This germination test indicates that the inhibitory allelopathic effect by R. pseudoacacia is caused by chemical interaction not by nutritional competition and that the allelochermicals of black locust act species-specifically. No specific influence of the total amount of phenolic compounds on the allelopathic inhibitory germination and the synergic effect by each phenolic compound may play a role for the allelopathic effect by R. pseudoacacia.
1. In the mulberry groves for both rearing of spring and fall, the rate of germination was 74.3 percent and the rate of the unfinished bud was 25.7 percent. 2. When the summer pruning after spring rearing was not worked, new sprouted leaves from the axillary buds of an age old branches was 74.88 percent of germination and the rest from unfinished bud during the spring showed 28.12 percent. 3. In the furrows running from north to south, new buds facing the due north were the worst but towards south-east and north-east were the best in their sprouts. 4. One year-old branches which had been raised without the summer pruning in the bush types of Morus Lhou (ser) Koidz offered a habitat where Apriona Rugico1lis Cherr could live. 5. On the grove of Morus Lhou Koidz cultivated at lower zone under a higher humidity and the shortage of sun light the appearance of Anomoneura Mori Schw was likely to happen very much. 6. One year old branches without the summer pruning produced more leaves owing to a long period of growth than branches with the summer pruning in the fall crops. 7. It is necessary to reconsider a certain distance of planting because of causing, when the summer pruning was not made in the bush plantation, a obstacle of fertilizer operation or the forth coming year's management. 8. It can not be thought the ideal method for us to raise mulberry tree such as Morus Lhou Koidz under natural form and at a short distance of planting (one another). 9. Among the species, Morus alba L. had a great deal of leaves and of the rate of germination per unit length of branch.
To select fruit trees suitable for shaded urban garden with Elaeagnus umbellata var. coreana, Malus domestica 'Alps Otome', Malus domestica 'Fujii', Prunus mume, Prunus persica for. persica, Rubus fructicosus, and Vaccinium corymbosum 'Reka', leaf growth in response to different light was investigated two years after 35% shade treatment. Leaf area of E. umbellata var. coreana, M. domestica 'Alps Otome', P. mume, P. persica for. persica, and V. corymbosum 'Reka' increased in shading. Fresh weight of leaves make inconsistent response to shading in every species but dry weight of E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica showed the highest 150% and 148%, increment, respectively. Althought leaf water content of E. umbellata var. coreana decreased in shading, there is no difference in P. persica for. persica. Chlorophyll value of E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica that showed higher than any other species is correlated with dark leaf green. Compared to specific leaf weight of E. umbellata var. coreana, P. persica for. persica, and V. corymbosum 'Reka' showed lower than any other species in shading, that of M. domestica 'Fujii', and R. fructicosus increased in reverse. These results indicate that E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica that showed high value in several invesetigaton items are suitable for shady urban condition considering leaf growth in response to shading.

Ammi majus (white lace flower, Unbelliferae) is an ornamental plant used for cut-flower arrangements worldwide. A potyvirus was isolated from its leaves with mosaic and chlorotic symptoms in the cultivated field of Chiba, Japan. Compared with Japanese homuort mosaic virus (JHMV) previously isolated from Cryptotaenia japonica, it showed similar characteristics in host reactions and molecular properties. The nucleotide sequences of coat protein and 3'- nontranslated region were highly homologous and shared 87% and 91% identities with those of JHMV, respectively. This virus was thus supposed to be an isolate of JHMV and designated as JHMV-Am. Phylogenetic tree was constructed using CP nucleotide sequences of the two isolates and other potyviruses previously reported. JHMV-Am and JHMV fell into a cluster with Korean strain of Zantedeschia mosaic virus (ZaMV-KR). However, low identity in amino acid sequences was found in the termini of CP genes between the two isolates of JHMV and ZaMV-KR.

Ginkgolides (GK) and bilobalide are valuable compounds that belong to the lactone terpene. The contents of these metabolites were determined by HPLC from female and male tree of Ginkgo biloba L. The productivity of G. biloba cells was also compared with the corresponding individual trees. High variations in the ginkgolides and bilobalide were observed from different individuals, plant parts, and cultured cells. The ginkgolides and bilobalide contents were different depending on the plant parts. Callus was obtained from various plant tissues, and NAA was better at callogenesis than 2,4-D in both the female and male trees. The plants and their corresponding cells showed considerable variation in their ginkgolides and bilobalide concentrations. The ginkgolides and bilobalide contents were not correlated with the production between dominant trees and their corresponding cells. Light irradiation enhanced the production of GK-A and GK-B, however, the concentration of bilobalide decreased under dark conditions.
From April to May 1998, Phytophthora rot on pear, which has not been reported in Korea before, became an epidemic in the southeast part of the country under abnormally higher temperature and prolonged rainy days. Average temperature was about $3^{\circ}$ higher than in normal years, and 29 days were rainy during the 2 months in the areas surveyed. Over 1,000 orchards estimated at about 270 ha in 19 cultivation areas were infected by the disease, which occurred on all parts of the tree such as leaves, shoots, branches, stems, and flower clusters. Among 43 isolates collected from various locations and plant parts, 41 were identified as Phytophthora cactorum while 2 were identified as P. cambivora based on their mycological characteristics. The representative isolates revealed strong pathogenicity not only to pear but also to apple and peach. Among 23 pear cultivars tested, 7 were estimated as susceptible, 4 were moderate, and 11 were resistant to the pathogen. Results suggest that Phytophthora disease on pear is a potential threat to pear cultivation when environmental factors are favorable to disease development.
Powdery mildew diseases previously unrecorded in Korea were noticed on four species of ornamental trees. Field observations on each disease were described and the causal fungi were identified. Powdery mildew of Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa was found to occur mildly, especially on plants growing in shade. The causal fungus was identified as Microsphaera nomurae U. Braun. Cornus florida was found to be infected with Microsphaera pulchra Cooke & Peck and supposed to be epidemic in nursery. Powdery mildew of Malus baccata occurred on young leaves and herbaceous stems in nursery. The causal fungus was classified as Podosphaera leucotricha (Ellis & Everh.) Salmon. Powdery mildew of Ulmus macrocarpa was found to occur in autumn and severe on young shoots. Uncinula kenjiana Homma was identified as the causal fungus.

To identify the rapacity of waste leachate absorption in Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var, japonica, four different treatments were applied to seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water, v/v) and 25% dilution, (25% leachate: 75% water, v/v) were applied to these two species. After the experiment, concentrations of heavy metals in tree parts were analyzed by an Inductively Coupled Plasma emission spectrometer (ICP). treatment with waste leachate significantly stimulated both Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var. japonica biomass production relative to the water control. In addition, these species showed good absorption capacity of As, Co, Hg and Ni elements. The results of this study suggested that these two species can absorb the toxic materials through their roots and transport them to stems or leaves.
Gaseous organochlorine pesticides (OCPs : heptachlor epoxide, p, p'-DDE, ${\gamma}-HCH,\;{\alpha}-chlordane,\;{\gamma}-chlordane$ and trans-nonachlor) concentration was measured using PUF high volume sampler from June, 2000 to June, 2002 in the semi-rural atmosphere. The OCPs concentration in atmosphere, which is estimated by the slope (m) of Clausius-Clapeyron equation and phase-transition energy $({\Delta}H)$, was influenced by revolatilization from environmental matrix (soil, water and tree leaves) and a long range transportation of air mass. But the former affected OCPs concentration more than the latter. The degradation rate constants (k) of OCPs calculated using multiple regression analysis and revised standard temperature method were in good agreement each other. The value of k of ${\gamma}-HCH$ was very low as -0.0007, but the range of k of other components were $-0.00l8{\sim}-0.0038$. The half-life $({\tau})$ which was calculated by k of ${\gamma}-HCH$ was 2.6 years-the longest one, but that of heptachlor epoxide was in 0.5 year-the shortest one. $({\tau})\;of\;{\alpha}-chlordane,\;{\gamma}-chlordane$ and trans-nonachlor in technical chlordane was 1.0, 1.1 and 0.7 year respectively.
