This paper describes the spherical ammonium diuranate gel particles which are the intermediated material of the $UO_2$ microsphere for an VHTR(very high temperature reactor) nuclear fuel. The characteristics of the intermediate-ADU gel particles prepared by AWD(ageing, washing, and drying) and FB(fluidized-bed) apparatus were examined and compared in a sol-gel fabrication process. The electrical conductivity of washing filtrate from the FB treating and the surface area of dried-ADU gel particles were higher than those of AWD treating. Also, an internal pore volume in dried-ADU gel particles showed a more decrease in AWD treatment than FB treatment because of decomposition of PVA affected by the washing time. However, the internal microstructures of ADU gel particles were similar regardless of the process variation.
Cerebral aneurysm is common lesion among adult population. Current methods for treating the disease have several limitations. Inspired by fern leaves, we have developed a new stent, called leaf stent, which can provide a tailored coverage at the neck of an aneurysm and thus prevent the blood from entering the aneurysm. It alone can be used to treat the cerebral aneurysm and therefore overcomes problems existing in current treating methods. The paper focuses on the numerical simulation of the leaf stents. The mechanical behaviour of the stent in various designs has been investigated using the finite element method. It has been found that certain designs provide adequate radial force and have excellent longitudinal flexibility. The performance of certain leaf stents is comparable and even superior to those of the commercially available cerebral stents such as the Neuroform stent and the Enterprise stent, commonly used for stent assisted coiling, while at the same time, providing sufficient coverage to isolate the aneurysm without using coils.
Nausea and vomiting are common adverse events in chemotherapy. In spite of the serious effects on the quality of life and further treatment, they remain overlooked by physicians, and no standard treatment has been developed. Neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor antagonists and palonosetron are the major agents in the standard regimen for treating moderately and highly emetogenic chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). However, NK-1 receptor antagonists first became commercially available at the end of 2013 and palonosetron has not been extensively applied in China. Olanzapine was recommended as a therapy for moderate and severe CINV in antiemesis-clinical practice guidelines in oncology in 2014 for the first time. It is an atypical antipsychotic agent, which can block multiple receptors on neurotransmitters. During more than 10 years, olanzapine has demonstrated significant effects in preventing CINV and treating breakthrough and refractor CINV, which was observed in case reports, precise retrospective studies, and phase I, II and III clinical trials, with no grade 3 to 4 adverse events. In particular, it is superior to aprepitant and dexamethasone in delayed nausea and vomiting. Therefore, this compound is worthy of further investigation.
Objectives: This study presents Korean medicine clinical practice guidelines for bladder cancer, of which the 5-year survival rate has still been about 75% since the 1990s despite the rapid development of medical science. Methods: A consensus was reached by an expert committee composed of professors and researchers who specialize in Korean medicine on the basis of a literature review that included other countries' clinical guidelines and a textbook. Results: Traditional Chinese medicine clinical practice guidelines were published for the first time in 2014. In Korea, the medical system is different from China in that Korea has completely dualized Korean and Western medicine and a low availability of proprietary herbal medicines. Therefore, these Korean medicine clinical practice guidelines for treating bladder cancer based on the previously published guidelines of Chinese medicine will help first-line Korean medicine doctors. Conclusions: Further studies related to Korean medicine are necessary to develop more advanced Korean medicine clinical practice guidelines for treating bladder cancer.
Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is the mixed organic wastewater generated from palm oil industry. In this study, kinetic analysis with treating POME in an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) was performed. Therefore, the AHR was monitored for its performances with respect to the changes of COD concentrations and hydraulic retention time (HRT). Batch tests were performed to find out the substrate removal kinetics by granular sludge from POME. Modified Stover Kincannon, First-order, Monod, Grau second-order kinetic models were used to analyze the performance of reactor. The results from the batch test indicate that the substrate removal kinetics of granular sludge is corresponds to follow Monod's theory. However, Grau second-order model were the most appropriate models for the continuous test in the AHR. The second order kinetic constant, saturation value constant, maximum substrate removal rate, and first-order kinetic constant were 2.60/day, 41.905 g/L-day, 39.683 g/L-day, and 1.25/day respectively. And the most appropriate model was Grau second-order kinetic model comparing the model prediction values and measured COD concentrations of effluent, whereas modified Stover-Kincannon model showed the lowest correlation.
[ ${\alpha}$ ]synuclein (${\alpha}$-syn) is implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other related diseases. We have previously reported that ${\alpha}$-syn binds to the cell membranes in a transient and reversible manner. However, little is known about the physiologic function and/or consequence of this association. Here, we examined whether chemically induced perturbations to the cellular membranes enhance the binding of ${\alpha}$-syn, based on hypothesis that ${\alpha}$-syn may play a role in maintenance of membrane integrity or repair. We induced membrane perturbations or alterations in ${\alpha}$-syn-overexpressing human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) by treating the cells with hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) or oleic acid. In addition, membranes fractionated from these cells were perturbed by treating them with proteinase K or chloroform. Dynamic interaction of ${\alpha}$-syn to the membranes was analyzed by the chemical cross-linking assay that we developed in the previous study. We found that membrane interaction of ${\alpha}$-syn was increased upon treatment with membrane-perturbing reagents in a dose and time dependent manner. These results suggest that perturbations in the cellular membranes cause increased binding of ${\alpha}$-syn, and this may have significant implication in the physiological function of ${\alpha}$-syn in cells.
Objectives : This study was designed to investigate possibilities of herbal acupuncture for obesity. Methods : We researched into 23 kinds of literature and considered acupoints and herbs of herbal acupuncture for obesity. Results : Prescriptions for obesity include Erchentang(二陳湯), Liujunzitang(六君子湯) for phlegm-retention syndrome(痰飮), Wulingsan(五?散), Qianghuoshengshitang(羌活勝濕湯), Shenshitang(渗濕湯), Lingguishugantang(?桂朮甘湯) for Dampness syndrome(濕證) and Pingweisan(平胃散) for activating spleen and stomach(運化脾胃). And Rhizoma atractylodis(蒼朮), Tuber pinelliae(半夏), Rhizoma atractylodis macrocephalae(白朮), Fructus ponciri(枳殼), Fructus immaturus ponciri(枳實), Poria(茯?), Semen coicis(薏苡仁), Rhizoma alismatis(澤瀉) Fructus amomi(砂仁), Polyporus umbellatus(猪?), Medulla tetrapanacis(通草) can be used for both herbal medication and herbal acupuncture. And also there are some important acupoints for treating obesity, which are Sanyinjiao(三陰交), Pishu(脾兪), Gongsun(公孫), Fenglong(豊隆), Yinlingquan(陰陵泉), Zusanli(足三里), Qihai(氣海), Sanjiaoshu(三焦兪), Zhongwan(中脘), Neiguan(內關), Weishu(胃兪), Shenshu(腎兪) and Shangjuxu(上巨虛). Conclusions : We recommend that herbal acupuncture can be used for obesity. This method is a kind of injection using herbal extract, which can apply pharmacognosy theory and meridian system at the same time.
As structural materials, magnesium (Mg) alloys have been widely used in the fields of aviation, automobiles, optical instruments, and electronic products. There are few studies on the effect of coating conditions on the compositional variation during the formation process of the conversion coatings. Rare-earth based conversion coating on AZ91 magnesium alloy was prepared in ceric sulfate and hydrogen peroxide contained solution. The element composition and valence as well as their distribution in the coating were analyzed with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effect of treating process on the element composition were also studied. It was found that the conversion coating surface consists of Mg, Al, O, Ce, and the weight content of Ce in the coating was affected by the treating solution concentration and immersion time; the Ce element was distributed in the coating non-uniformly and existed in the form of $Ce^{+3}$ and $Ce^{+4}$, while the O element existed in the form of $OH^-$, $O^{2-}$, $H_2O$. Based on microscopic analysis results, the electrochemical deposition mechanism on the micro-anode and micro-cathode in the process of the coating growth was suggested.
Objectives : This study aims to evaluate current clinical evidence of traditional Korean medicine treatment on wrist pain with carpal tunnel syndrome. Methods : Ten Korean databases were searched for prospective clinical trials of traditional Korean medicine therapy on wrist pain with carpal tunnel syndrome from the time of their inception to February, 2015. Studies conducted in Korean, Chinese and English were searched. Risk of bias in included non-randomized controlled trials was assessed by the Cochrane handbook procedure. Results : Four non-randomized controlled trials were included. A high risk of bias was observed in all trials. All of the included studies reported favorable effects being experienced by an intervention group compared to a baseline or control group. Included studies never described any occurrence of adverse events. Conclusions : There is no evidence that traditional Korean medicine treatments are effective for treating wrist pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. All of the included studies lacked appropriate methodological qualities and internal validity. Future well-designed clinical trials that evaluate the effects and safety of traditional Korean medicine treatment for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome are needed.
This study was conducted to investigate the potential of the neutral extract (NE) prepared by treating P. radiata bark with aqueous NaHCO3 solution as a natural dyestuff. Silk and cotton fabrics were dyed at four different NE concentrations, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% o.w.b. (on the weight of bath). The fabric to liquid ratio of 1 : 50, dyeing temperature of 90℃, and dyeing time of 90 min were used as the fixed condition. The appropriate NE dyeing concentration of silk and cotton fabrics was 1.5% o.w.b. Colors of the dyed silk and cotton fabrics were brown and light brown, respectively. From colorfastness assessment, both dyed silk and cotton showed good washing and rubbing fastness, but poor light fastness. NE dyed fabrics exhibited excellent ammonia deodorization property and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Therefore, NE of P. radiata bark could have the potential for use as a functional brown dyestuff.
