This paper presents a revised beamforming inversion method for ocean acoustic tomography. In the proposed inversion method, the relation between group velocity and phase velocity that are the characteristics of the waveguide is used for the inversion of perturbed sound speed profile. The group velocity and phase velocity can be expressed as a function of the travel time and arrival angle of the received signals that are analyzed by the beamforming signal processing. This paper illustrates the simulated results of inversion for the fluctuated sound speed profile of the East Korea Sea and we found the applicability of revised beamforming inversion method to range independent ocean.
Seismic exploration is divided by reflection and refraction method greatly, and reflection method can analyze complicated underground structure in the basis high resolution image, and refraction method can grasp the velocity structure of underground accurately. This thesis confirmed application of mixed exploration techniques using advantages of reflection and refraction. Reflection data processing applied conventional technique, and inversion of refraction data applied travel time tomographic technique that using SIRT method. Also, could establish initial information in model variable and improved the result of inversion by restricting model parameter value and dimension of area. Confirmed efficient fact in sequence and velocity structure grasping by utilizing accurate initial velocity model made out on the basis of marine reflection data, and mixed exploration technique using reflection and refraction have propriety that can trust in field application.

In order to investigate the validity of acoustic tomography for current measurement, an experiment of reciprocal sound transmission was conducted in April, 1997 in the southern water of Koje island. This experiment was attempted as a preliminary field study on coastal ocean acoustic tomography for construction of real-time current observation system. Examining the physical oceanography environments, the current data obtained by travel time difference of reciprocal sound wave was compared with the data of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The result shows the correlation coefficient of 0.943, very good relation between the two data, and therefore the ocean acoustic tomography could be a useful method for current measurement in the coastal area.
Numerical experiments of OAT (Ocean Acoustic Tomography) are carried out in the East Sea of Korea where the canonical ocean has been perturbed by a mesoscale warm eddy and a thermal front. In order to estimate the horizontal and vertical structure of water temperature of the perturbed ocean, the experimental area is divided into 16 cells with 8 pairs of sources and receivers for a horizontal slice and the water column is divided into 8 layers for a vertical slice. The inversely estimated temperature field by using SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) method reveals the eddy and frontal structure clearly. The rms errors of the two horizontal slices are less than $0.4^{\circ}C$ and $1.7^{\circ}C$ at 400 m and 200 m depths, respectively, while the error in the vertical slice is less than $1.0^{\circ}C.$ For better estimation of temperature by OAT method, particularly for the East Sea, a range-dependent ray model should be used to solve the forward problem. At the same time, improvement in computing the refracted ray path between vertical layers is required to obtain more accurate travel time information. The results of the present experiment give rise to a possibility of application of OAT in remote sensing of the ocean thermal structure.
We investigated the distorting factors of velocity structure reconstructed by traveltime inversion. The set of models that fit the data in a numerical sense usually contains unrealistic models. Reconstructed velocity structure was enhanced because unreasonable models were eliminated by defining constraint of variable grid using a priori information. To correct time delay of source explosion, which distorts traveltime tomograms, terms for correction of time delay was formulated into equation of travel time tomography.

Three processing strategies of seismic refraction data are tested in terms of velocity and depth profiles or structures for mapping of geological discontinuities: GRM(generalized reciprocal method), GLI(generalized linear inversion), Tomography. The test data used in this study are the shot gathers reconstructed by numerical modeling for the structures of 3 planar layers(horizontal, inclined), the buried vertical fracture zones, and vertical fault zones. Tomography is shown to be very efficient for mapping of more complicated tone such as vertical fault and buried fracture zones, whereas GRM and GLI can be useful for horizontal and/or inclined layers, probably on their bases of analysis of first arrivals in travel time curves.
It was necessary to devise new techniques to overcome and enhance the resolution limits of traveltime tomography. Waveform inversion has been one of the methods for giving very high resolution result. High resolution image could be acquired because waveform inversion used not only phase but amplitude. But waveform inversion was much time consuming Job because forward and backward modeling was needed at each iteration step. Velocity-stress method was used for effective modeling. Resolution limits of imaging methods such as travel time inversion, acoustic and elastic waveform inversion were investigated with numerical models. it was investigated that Resolution limit of waveform inversion was similar tn resolution limit of migration derived by Schuster. Horizontal resolution limit could be improved with increased coverage by adding VSP data in cross hole that had insufficient coverage. Also, waveform inversion was applied to realistic models to evaluate applicability and using initial guess of travel time tomograms to reduce non-linearity of waveform inversion showed that the better reconstructed image could be acquired.
In this study, we developed reflection tomography inversion algorithm using Straight Ray Technique (SRT) which can calculate travel time easily and fast for complex geological structure. The inversion process begins by setting the initial velocity model as a constant velocity model that hat only impedance boundaries. The inversion process searches a layer-interface structure model that is able to explain the given data satisfactorily by inverting to minimize data misfit. For getting optimal solution, we used Gauss-Newton method that needed constructing the approximate Hessian matrix. We also applied the Marquart-Levenberg regularization method to this inversion process to prevent solution diverging. The ability of the method to resolve typical target structures was tested in a synthetic salt dome inversion. Using the inverted velocity model, we obtained the migration image close to that of the true velocity model.
During excavation work for the construction of a highway bridge in a limestone area in Korea, several cavities were found, and construction work was stopped temporarily. Cavities under the bridge piers might seriously threaten the safety of the planned bridge, because they could lead to excessive subsidence and differential settlement of the pier foundations. In order to establish a method for reinforcement of the pier foundations, borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys were carried out, to locate cavities under the planned pier locations and to determine their sizes where they exist. Since travel time data from the crosshole radar survey showed anisotropy, we applied an anisotropic tomography inversion algorithm assuming heterogeneous elliptic anisotropy, in order to reconstruct three kinds of tomograms: tomograms of maximum and minimum velocities, and of the direction of the symmetry axis. The distribution of maximum velocity matched core logging results better than that of the minimum velocity. The degree of anisotropy, defined by the normalized difference between maximum and minimum velocities, was helpful in deciding whether an anomalous zone in a tomogram was a cavity or not. By careful examination of borehole radar reflection and tomography images, the spatial distributions of cavities were delineated, and most of them were interpreted as being filled with clay and/or water. All the interpretation results implied that two faults imaged clearly by a DC resistivity survey were among the most important factors controlling the groundwater movement in the survey area, and therefore were closely related to the development of cavities. The method of reinforcement of the pier foundations was based on the interpretation results, and the results were confirmed when construction work was resumed.
To delineate the inhomogeneities including fractures and to estimate the freshness of rock borehole radar consisting of the reflection and tomography methods, and GPR surveys were conducted at a granite quarry mine. The borehole reflection survey using the direction finding antenna was also conducted to get the spatial orientations of reflectors. 20 MHz was adopted as the central frequency for the borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys and 100 MHz was for GPR. Through the interpretation of borehole reflection data using dipole and direction finding antenna as well as GPR images, which are good agreement with each other, we could determine the orientation of the major fractures in three dimensional way. Parts of travel time curves of tomography data showed the anisotropy, which is uncommon in granite quarry. By comparing the tomography data and TeleViewer images, the anisotropy effect in this area are closely related to fine fissures aligned in the same direction. The area confined by the two fractures, MF2 and MF5, might consist of the most fresh granite in the surveyed area, which was concluded from the borehole radar tomography, and GPR images as well as the distribution of anisotropy.
