A Study on the Numerical Calculation for Wind Waves During the Passage of Typhoon 'Memi' (태풍 '매미' 내습시 파랑선정에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • A Typhoon wave is generated by wind fields during the Passage of Typhoon. Transporting wind field makes wind wave and swell in the open sea, and then, those wave components are transported in the shallow water. Typhoon waves in the shallow water is generated by Typhoon wind field and incident wave. Bisides, Incident waves to the shallow water are deformated by topographic conditions. This paper estimated the analysis of the Typhoon waves by wind fields and incident waves according to wave action balance equation model. As the result of wave numerical experiment, wave field during the passage of Typhoon 'Memi' in the shallow water is strongly effect by wind fields. Wave action balance equaion can be partially used for Typhoon wave simulations.

  • There are two purposes for the marine structures used for fossil fuel: transporting huge amounts of crude oil and petroleum products and producing petroleum resources on the ocean in an isolated operational environment. Both types of structures are exposed to dangerous situations by sea conditions. Such marine structures are greatly affected by ocean climate conditions and its changes. Because of such ocean climate changes, it has been necessary to monitor marine structures. This research discusses the difficulties with adopting a new methodology based on a ubiquitous sensor network and develops an optimized sensor network management system design for a marine structure.

  • The archipelago in the southwest sea, Korea, was registered as Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Man and the Biosphere (UNESCO MAB) on May 26, 2009. This study was conducted to determine a method of reconciling natural and anthropogenic processes and to enable sustainable development in the vicinity of the Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve (SDBR). To accomplish this, the characteristics of SDBR with respect to biodiversity and cultural diversity were evaluated. In addition, a management plan regarding the wise use of the SDBR was developed while focusing on four parts: cultural support to induce motivation for native conservation and development; development and specification of fisheries and cultivation based on local community systems; restructuring of marine food products and resource transporting systems; activation and discovery of indigenous knowledge to enable networking between local residents, academia and the UNESCO-international society.

  • The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the disruptive innovation strategy based on the Resources Process Values(RPV) theory for a successful firm. Disruptive innovations seemed not initially perform well enough to be sold or used successfully in markets. The products and services used disruptive technologies have not been as effective as those used in the established markets. However, they have other attributes such as simplicity, convenience, and low cost, which appeal to a new, small and initially unattractive set in new or low-end applications. The Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.(HHI) performed the Jubail Industrial Harbour Project(JIHP), which built the Open Sea Tanker Terminal(OSTT) in Saudi Arabia, using the disruptive innovation strategy in order to lower the manufacturing cost of the offshore jacket and to complete the project successfully. The HHI developed the design and drawing systems to manufacture the jacket and also developed the HYundai Jacket Analysis System(HYJAS) software to use the structural analysis against stresses from rolling and pitching of the barge while transporting the jacket by sea.

  • Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) facilities envision future Intelligent Transporting Systems (ITSs) by providing inter-vehicle communication for metrics such as road surveillance, traffic information, and road condition. In recent years, vehicle manufacturers, researchers and academicians have devoted significant attention to vehicular communication technology because of its highly dynamic connectivity and self-organized, decentralized networking characteristics. However, due to VANET's high mobility, dynamic network topology and low communication coverage, dissemination of large data packets (e.g. multimedia content) is challenging. Clustering enhances network performance by maintaining communication link stability, sharing network resources and efficiently using bandwidth among nodes. This paper proposes a mobility-based, multi-hop clustering algorithm, (MBCA) for multimedia content broadcasting over an IEEE 802.11p-LTE-enabled hybrid VANET architecture. The OMNeT++ network simulator and a SUMO traffic generator are used to simulate a network scenario. The simulation results indicate that the proposed clustering algorithm over a hybrid VANET architecture improves the overall network stability and performance, resulting in an overall 20% increased cluster head duration, 20% increased cluster member duration, lower cluster overhead, 15% improved data packet delivery ratio and lower network delay from the referenced schemes [46], [47] and [50] during multimedia content dissemination over VANET.

The Inverse Circulation System for Using Treated Waste Water as Instream Flow (하수처리수의 하천유지용수 활용을 위한 역순환시스템의 비교)

  • In this paper, it was studied on a device for maintaining the instream flow by using treated waste water from sewage treatment plant, and discussed on using the inverse circulation system in stream for directly utilizing treated waste water as instream flow. This system is to secure insufficient discharge at upstream, as treated water is pumped from treatment plant which is located at down stream. Therefore, it will be improved water quality with simple water treatment plant, as it is composed of optimal system by consist various types of scheme for transporting. Also, influx method of transferred treated water to a stream will be improved water quality by aeration and be shown environmental friendly spaces. It was considered water quality and present using condition to use for maintenance water in stream by treated water. The guide line for application of inverse circulation system in domestic streams is suggested.

Development of leakage detection model in water distribution networks applying LSTM-based deep learning algorithm (LSTM 기반 딥러닝 알고리즘을 적용한 상수도시스템 누수인지 모델 개발)

  • Water Distribution Networks, one of the social infrastructures buried underground, has the function of transporting and supplying purified water to customers. In recent years, as measurement capability is improved, a number of studies related to leak recognition and detection by applying a deep learning technique based on flow rate data have been conducted. In this study, a cognitive model for leak occurrence was developed using an LSTM-based deep learning algorithm that has not been applied to the waterworks field until now. The model was verified based on the assumed data, and it was found that all cases of leaks of 2% or more can be recognized. In the future, based on the proposed model, it is believed that more precise results can be derived in the prediction of flow data.

  • Over the last decade, the competition for space development has accelerated. The world's largest space agencies are aiming toward long-term lunar exploration and manned missions. For sustainable and safe lunar exploration, construction of infrastructures that include various habitats is essential. However, transporting construction materials from Earth for lunar base construction is extremely expensive. Thus, technologies for manufacturing construction materials using in-situ resources from the moon should be advanced. The sintering techniques have been actively studied using lunar soil. In this review, five sintering technologies, including radiation, solar, spark plasma, laser, and microwave sintering, for manufacturing construction materials using lunar soil are introduced, and future research is discussed.

  • 남극에 상주하는 여러 과학기지 근처 해역에서 5 mm 이하의 크기를 가지는 미세플라스틱이 다량 발견되고 있으며, 그에 따라 과학기지에서 방출하는 방류수가 미세플라스틱의 지역 소스로 여겨지고 있다. 현재는 미세플라스틱의 오염 수준을 이해하는 정도에서 그쳤으며, 미세플라스틱의 물리적인 운송 메커니즘을 이해하고자 하는 시도는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 남극 세종과학기지 근처에서도 미세플라스틱이 발견됨에 따라 본 연구에서는 과학기지 인근인 마리안 소만(Marian Cove)에서의 미세플라스틱 운송 메커니즘을 확인하고자 한다. 연구 대상 지역에서 미세플라스틱의 체류 시간은 짧기 때문에, 미세플라스틱에 생물오손 또는 풍화작용이 일어나기에는 충분하지 않은 시간이다. 따라서, 마리안 소만에서 발견된 미세플라스틱에 대해 연직 속도에 따라 확실히 가라앉는 그룹과 확실히 떠오르는 그룹으로 나누어 입자의 이송 메커니즘을 파악하였다. 해수 유동 모델과 파랑 모델을 결합하여 마리안 소만의 해수 흐름을 재현하였으며, 과학기지 방류 구 위치에서 방출된 미세플라스틱의 이송 경로는 라그랑지안 입자 추적(Lagrangian Particle Tracking) 방법을 이용하였다. 본 연구에서는 미세플라스틱의 궤적을 설명하기 위해 입자의 이송에 영향을 주는 힘을 결정할 수 있는 무차원 수 HK angle을 제안하였으며, 이를 이용하여 마리안 소만에서의 미세플라스틱 이송을 설명하였다. 대상 해역 내에서 확실히 떠오르는 그룹은 표층 흐름을 따라 해안선에 도달하였으며, 확실히 가라앉는 그룹은 방출 직후 빠르게 가라 앉으며 방출 위치 근처인 해저에 집적되었다. HK angle에 따르면, 마리안 소만의 연직 흐름이 강할 경우에는 미세플라스틱의 특성에 관계없이 해수 흐름을 따라 이송됨을 확인하였다. 더 나아가, 조석에 따라 미세플라스틱의 방출 시간을 달리하고, 방출 위치를 달리하여 모의함으로써 마리안 소만과 같이 작은 만에서 미세플라스틱 오염도를 줄이기 위한 적절한 방류수 방출 시간 및 위치를 제안하였다.

Environment-friendly Processing Technologies of Mine Tailings: Research on the Characteristics of Mine Tailings when Developing of Deep Sea Mineral Resources (선광잔류물의 친환경적 처리 기술: 심해저광물자원개발시 발생하는 선광잔류물 특성 연구)

  • Mine tailings, which are inevitably formed by the development of manganese nodules, manganese crusts, and hydrothermal seafloor deposits, have attracted attention because of their quantity and potential toxicity. However, there is a lack of data on the quantity of mine tailings being generated, their physicochemical properties, and their effects as environmental hazards and on marine ecosystems in general. The importance of treating mine tailings in an environmentally friendly manner has been recognized recently and related reduction/treatment methods are being considered. In the case of deep-sea mineral resource development, if mine tailings cannot be treated aboard a ship, the issue becomes one of the cost of transporting them to land and solving the problem of environmental pollution there. Therefore, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology conducted research on the harmfulness of mine tailings, their effect on marine ecosystem, the diffusion model of contaminated particles, and candidate purification treatment technologies based on five representative controlling factors: 1) effects of pollution /on the environment, 2) effects of environmental/ biological hazards, 3) diffusion of particles, 4) mineral dressings, and 5) reducing/processing mine tailings. The results of this study can provide a basis for minimizing environmental problems by providing scientific evidences of the environmental effects of mine tailings. In addition, it is also expected that these results could be applied to the treatment of pollutants of different origins and at land-based mining waste sites.
