Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have emerged as a promising solution to enhance spectrum utilization by using unused or less used spectrum in radio environments. The basic idea of CRNs is to allow secondary users (SUs) access to licensed spectrum, under the condition that the interference perceived by the primary users (PUs) is minimal. In CRNs, the channel availability is uncertainty due to the existence of PUs, resulting in intermittent communication. Transmission control protocol (TCP) performance may significantly degrade in such conditions. To address the challenges, some transport protocols have been proposed for reliable transmission in CRNs. In this paper we survey the state-of-the-art transport protocols for CRNs. We firstly highlight the unique aspects of CRNs, and describe the challenges of transport protocols in terms of PU behavior, spectrum sensing, spectrum changing and TCP mechanism itself over CRNs. Then, we provide a summary and comparison of existing transport protocols for CRNs. Finally, we discuss several open issues and research challenges. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first survey on transport protocols for CRNs.

A service network in the future ubiquitous environment can consist of a variety of elements, which include different protocols of the network transport. Interwoking different transport protocols can alleviate such problems occurred in accessing network as poverty of facilities, faults, and contention in a path of particular protocol communication. This paper schemes to improve performance of the network constituted of different protocols for the network transport. Interposing an interwork element, like SDR (Software Defined Radio), in the network can raise availability of transport paths, and then improve transport performance of the overall network Simulation analysis justifies such a scheme and this paper presents simulation results.

Wireless networks composed of multimedia-enabled resource-constrained sensor nodes have enriched a large set of monitoring sensing applications. In such communication scenario, however, new challenges in data transmission and energy-efficiency have arisen due to the stringent requirements of those sensor networks. Generally, congested nodes may deplete the energy of the active congested paths toward the sink and incur in undesired communication delay and packet dropping, while bit errors during transmission may negatively impact the end-to-end quality of the received data. Many approaches have been proposed to face congestion and provide reliable communications in wireless sensor networks, usually employing some transport protocol that address one or both of these issues. Nevertheless, due to the unique characteristics of multimedia-based wireless sensor networks, notably minimum bandwidth demand, bounded delay and reduced energy consumption requirement, communication protocols from traditional scalar wireless sensor networks are not suitable for multimedia sensor networks. In the last decade, such requirements have fostered research in adapting existing protocols or proposing new protocols from scratch. We survey the state of the art of transport protocols for wireless multimedia sensor networks, addressing the recent developments and proposed strategies for congestion control and loss recovery. Future research directions are also discussed, outlining the remaining challenges and promising investigation areas.

Advances in mobile and wireless networking technologies have enabled mobile ad hoc networks applicable to a wide range of areas. Many cases of even such ad hoc networks demand to be accessible to the global network. Owing to be diversified in features depending on applications, however, some those networks may consist of devices or nodes which do not facilitate all the same transport protocols. This results in unreachable situations of establishing ad hoc network: such as non-existence of all required access points, faults or contention in a path of particular protocol communication. Interworking between different transport protocols can alleviate such problems. This paper proposes an interworking scheme to improve data transport performance and network accessibility, especially in such a mobile ad hoc network that is applicable to data communications among ships or user's convenient u-health services. Modeling and simulation analysis are used to verify the improvement.
Governments and public agencies try to use the cloud to carry out their work and provide public services. However, a public cloud is vulnerable to security side because it has a structure to support services using public networks (i.e, the internet). Thus, this paper finds the general security vulnerabilities of a network and compares and analyzes the characteristics of transport protocols (UDP, TCP, SCTP, and MPTCP) on the basis of their security vulnerabilities. This paper uses a reliability and security factor for the comparative analysis, evaluates the security exposure, and chooses a suitable protocol considering the security of the transport protocols in the cloud circumstance.

Recently, high-speed Internet users and broadband network infrastructure are increasing. However, the TCP protocol widely used in the Internet is an appropriate transport only for the legacy Internet, it is inefficient for traffic transport for network environments with large bandwidth-delay product. In order to remedy this problem, there have been many researches about improved congestion control algorithms for broadband networks. In these studies, most of performance evaluation has been done by simulations. In this paper, after we reviewed the proposed high bandwidth transport layer protocols, we implemented a real testbed, measured the performance and analyzed the problems of high-speed transport protocols through the international research network TEIN2 between three nations, Korea, China, and Germany.

Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) produced ATSC 2.0 standard, which has been used for a HD/SD digital broadcasting service with MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) as a delivery protocol. Recently, users might want to consume multimedia services without being constrained by transport network. However, MPEG-2 TS is not suitable protocol for IP network. Thus, ATSC has enacted ATSC 3.0 standard, which is designed for a hybrid service through a conversion of both broadcasting and broadband channels. The ATSC 3.0 specifies delivery protocols as MPEG Media Transport (MMT) for a broadcasting environment and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) for a broadband. However, it seems difficult to combine broadcast and broadband for hybrid broadcasting, and it is difficult to synchronize media data between MMT and DASH. This paper suggests various new service scenarios to be brought up by a hybrid broadcasting, ATSC 3.0, and also proposes a stable mechanism for switching contents between different delivery protocols such as MMT and DASH.
For scalable multicast transport, one of the promising approaches is to employ a control tree known as acknowledgement (ACK) tree which can be used to convey information on reliability and session status from receivers to a root sender. The existing tree configuration has focused on a 'bottom-up' scheme in which ACK trees grow from leaf receivers toward a root sender. This paper proposes an alternative 'top-down' configuration where an ACK tree begins at the root sender and gradually expands by including non-tree nodes into the tree in a stepwise manner. The proposed scheme is simple and practical to implement along with multicast transport protocols. It is also employed as a tree configuration in the Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol, which has been standardized in the ITU-T and ISO/IEC JTC1. From experimental simulations, we see that the top-down scheme provides advantages over the existing bottom-up one in terms of the number of control messages required for tree configuration and the number of tree levels.
VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network) is a mobile Ad-hoc Network which deals with the moving vehicles. VANET supports Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) which is related to different modes of transport and traffic management techniques. VANETs enabled users to be informed and make them safer. VANET uses IEEE 802.11p standard wireless access protocol for communication. An important and necessary issue of VANET is to design routing protocols. In a network, communication takes place by the use of the routing protocols. There are mainly two types of communications used such as Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) in VANET. Vehicles can send and receive messages among them and also to and from infrastructure used. In this paper, AODV, DSR and DSDV are compared by analysing the results of simulation on various metrics such as average throughput, instant throughput, packet delivery ratio and residual energy. Findings indicates utilization of AODV and DSR is more applicable for these metrics as compared to DSDV. A network simulator (NS2) is used for simulation.
Wireless networks have several unique features : node mobility, restricted bandwidth, time-variable bandwidth, large latency, and high bit error rates time due to channel fading. These features at wireless networks intend to decrease the performance TCP protocols are used in wireless networks. Lots of studies have been done for finding appropriate wireless transport protocols for current wireless communications. However, related studies have not provided good performance or some protocols have a good performance only in specific circumstances. Thus, these are not suitable for general wireless circumstance. Therefore, we propose a new wireless transport protocol which provides better performance than the previous ones. And we'd like to solve a problem that previous protocols cannot maintain their connections even though they have multiple paths until another path is successfully set up. To solve these problems, a new protocol ATP-M is proposed which is designed on already known TCP-M and ATP protocols. With NS-2 computer simulation, it is shown that this newly proposed protocol has better system throughput than TCP, TCP-M and ATP protocols.
