Elevation differences within a paddy field relate strongly to plant health, crop homogeneity, and pest control. For precision agriculture (PA), the elevation within a field should be precisely controlled. We analyzed variation in elevation within two rice paddies over one crop cycle. The study took place in two rectangular plots (Field A and Field B, each $50m{\times}30m$). Elevations within the two plots were measured by a laser-equipped surveying instrument, that could determine elevations to precisions of 1 mm. The test fields were divided into grids with 30 squares; elevation was measured at the center of each $5{\times}10-m$ grid square. This study measured elevation during nine observation periods from pre-plowing to post-harvest. Descriptive statistics showed the highest elevations after plowing due to soil disturbance. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant elevation differences before and after plowing and transplanting, although elevations were similar over the period of crop growth. Comparison of pre-plowing and post-harvest data showed differences in elevations, indicating that elevation changes occurred during plowing, rice transplanting, plant growth, and harvesting. In summary, the above statistical analyses indicated that elevation changes occurred due to plowing but not during the plant growth season or due to harvesting.
Cultivation of onions in Korean peninsula is so restricted to Southern region, mainly due to inadequate air temperature for the growth of onions in this region. This sometimes resulted in unstable supply of onions. The fluctuation of market prices mainly results from the limited production of onions in such restricted areas. Onions are usually transplanted at the end of fall and cultivated until the beginning of next summer. This study was designed to examine the possibility of extending production region of onions by adopting the plug seedling system, and the effects of plug seedling age, transplanting date, plug cell volume, and variety on the yield of onions were investigated. Transplanting date (Mar. 15 or Apr. 15) did not affect the yield of onions. However, 60-day-old seedlings produced significantly greater bulb yield (107.2 ton/ha) than those of 30- or 90- day-old seedlings. Bulb yields of seedlings raised in 128 and 72 cell trays were 125.0 and 120.8 ton/ha, which were significantly greater than those in other cell trays. Yield of seedlings raised in 406 cell trays was the lowest. Seedlings of mid-late 'Chenjuwhang' yielded 130.5 Ton/ha, which was significantly higher than those of other varieties. Considering the rainy season during early summer, we suggest that seedlings of onions raised for 60 days and transplanted on Mar. 15 should be advantageous in producing of marketable bulbs and that an early 'Yongbongwhang' should be the best variety.

Environmental effect of water-saving irrigation on the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) has not been well investigated. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of water-saving irrigation on GHGs as well as water use and rice production yield in paddy field condition in Korea. Four experimental runoff plots of 4x35 m in size were prepared at an existing paddy field. GHGs emission was measured during the 2012~2013 growing seasons while a Japonica rice variety was cultivated. Four different water management methods, 1) Continuous Flooding (CF), 2) Intermittent Drainage (ID), 3) Water Saving (WS), and 4) CF+WS, were used during a rice growing season to compare the effects of water management methods on GHGs emission. CF method is flooding all the time, ID method makes paddy water drained 40 days after transplanting for about two weeks, WS method maintains 2~3 cm water-level, which should be refilled when the water-level decreased to about 0 cm, and CF+WS method combines CF method before 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and WS method after 30 DAT. Regardless of water management methods, paddy field water was drained about 30 days before harvest. Amount of GHGs emission from WS plot was reduced by 69.3% compared to that from CF plot and by 59.0% compared to that from ID plot. Amount of GHGs emission from CF+WS plot was reduced by 60.7% compared to that from CF plot and by 47.5% compared to that from ID plot. Weed occurrence in CF+WS plots was reduced to 62.2% in comparison with the WS plot, implying that CF+WS plot showed the best effect to mitigation of the greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere.

In this study, the random forest approach was used to predict the national mean rice yield of South Korea by using mean climatic factors at a national scale. A random forest model that used monthly climate variable and year as an important predictor in predicting crop yield. Annual yield change would be affected by technical improvement for crop management as well as climate. Year as prediction factor represent technical improvement. Thus, it is likely that the variables of importance identified for the random forest model could result in a large error in prediction of rice yield in practice. It was also found that elimination of the trend of yield data resulted in reasonable accuracy in prediction of yield using the random forest model. For example, yield prediction using the training set (data obtained from 1991 to 2005) had a relatively high degree of agreement statistics. Although the degree of agreement statistics for yield prediction for the test set (2006-2015) was not as good as those for the training set, the value of relative root mean square error (RRMSE) was less than 5%. In the variable importance plot, significant difference was noted in the importance of climate factors between the training and test sets. This difference could be attributed to the shifting of the transplanting date, which might have affected the growing season. This suggested that acceptable yield prediction could be achieved using random forest, when the data set included consistent planting or transplanting dates in the predicted area.

The study was conducted to compare the chemical properties and microbial activity of soil and the crop productivity by applying homemade liquid fertilizers (LF) used in leading cucumber farms as well as to evaluate the eco-friendly LFs to substitute for a chemical fertilizer. Three homemade LFs, EM, starfish, and native microbes, and a chemical LF were regularly fertigated per three days during the growing season. Chemical LF contained the highest pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and concentrations of T-N, $P_2O_5$, K, Ca, and Mg, while the lowest EC level was observed for EM LF. Soil EC was the highest to the 3.0 dS/m for chemical LF-plots, with lowering soil pH, OM (organic matter), and Mg concentration. Soil chemical properties mostly increased in native microbes LF-plots. However, soil microbial properties were not significantly different among the LF treatment plots. OTU (operational taxonomic units), richness estimator, and diversity index of bacteria and fungi increased in the chemical LF and EM LF based on the pyrosequencing analysis. SPAD and PS II values on the treated-cucumber leaves were seasonally decreased from 32 to 60 days after transplanting, with the rapid decline observed at 45 days after transplanting. Number of leaves and crop height increased in the treatments with EM and native microbes LF. LF treated-cucumber crops were not significantly different for total fresh weight and fruit yield.
A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of season of application and particle-size distribution of silicate fertilizer on rice yields of Indica type, Milyang 23 and Japonica type Jinheung. The application of silicate fertilizer at the rate of 250kg per 10a increased greatly rice yields. Rice yields were a little higher when silicate fertilizer was applied at transplanting time (Spring application) than applied in Autumn of preceding year (Autumn application) and increased with increasing content of fine particles of silicate fertilizer. However, the difference in effects between the season of application was insignificant and the silicate fertilizer of particles to pass by 100% through a 8 mesh sieve and by 60% through a 25 mesh sieve, 8-25(60%) was as effective as the one to meet silicate fertilizer specifications, 10-28(60%). Silica content of plant samples did not show any significant effects of season of application and particle-size distribution of silicate fertilizer, whereas samples taken at 50 days after tran planting showed significant effects of season of application and particle-size distribution. Silica content of straw of Jinheung was highest when 8-25(60%) was applied. Silica content of soils before the experiment was 36.7 ppm and the content increased to range of 159.5-273.8 ppm and 80.3-134.4 ppm in the plots of Spring application and Autumn application respectively.
To estimate the leaf area index(LAI) of rice plant by non-destructive method, spectral reflectance from rice plant canopy was measured by using the spectroradiometer (LI-1800, LICOR Inc.) with one week interval during the rice growing season at Suwon paddy field in 1993. LAI of two medium late maturing varieties, Daechungbyeo and Ilpumbyeo, and one early maturing variety, Jinbubyeo, were observed and compared with those estimated by vegetation index. The reflectance(R) of visible wavelength remained less than 0.1 over entire growing season, but that of near infrared wavelength remained from 0.1 to 0.5 with the significant positive correlation with LAI. Vegetation index determined by the reflectance of visible against near infrared wavelength showed high correlation with LAI of rice canopy. Vegetation index derived from wide band ratio, NIR(720~1, 100nm) /Blue(400~500nm), showed the highest correlation coefficient with LAI. Vegetation index derived from narrow band(10nm interval) ratio, R910/R460, from transplanting to heading stage corresponded well to measured values (Y=0.16799X-0.79776 ; $R^2$=0.94). But another vegetation index, NIR(720~1, 100nm) /Red (600~700nm), showed higher correlation with LAI than NIR /Blue did from heading stage to maturity.

This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of quality and yield in potatoes grown at paddy field before rice transplantation during the spring season. Three potato cultivars ('Jowon', 'Haryeong', and 'Goun') were grown in Gangneung (asl 5 m) and Seocheon (asl 20 m). In both locations, weather condition belonged to the fourth zone (spring cropping) in potato production location's distribution of Korea. Daily mean soil temperature in both the locations was $0.2-0.6^{\circ}C$ lower than air temperature, while soil moisture was adequate level to potato growth in spite of spring drought. TR ratio was not affected by location, but by cultivar. Specific gravity, starch content, dry matter rate, and yield were significantly influenced by location and by cultivar. There was no difference in total tuber number by location, however there was a large gap in marketable tuber yield according to locations and cultivars. There were high negative relationships between yield and main qualities such as dry matter rate and starch content, while high positive correlation was observed between main qualities. It was possible to produce potato before rice transplanting at drained paddy fields located in representative two locations of potato spring cropping and their characteristics in growth and quality were similar to those generally well known in upland cultivation. Paddy field was thought to be more favorable than upland in terms of available soil moisture supply against spring drought. Further research, however, was needed to increase soil temperature and also preliminary review on proper cultivar according to location seemed to be needed for high yield.
An understanding of anthracnose (Colletotrichum acutatum) infections, including the infection of flowers and latent infection early in the season, is necessary to achieve successful control by means of properly timed spraying with a curative fungicide. In the present study, latent anthracnose infection of chili was investigated under greenhouse and field conditions in 2007-2008. Flowers on greenhouse-grown seedlings were infected and 11% of the young fruits subsequently showed symptoms of anthracnose. Apparently healthy-looking green peppers obtained from unsprayed fields or an organic market also exhibited symptoms of anthracnose after 4 days of incubation under high moisture conditions at $25^{\circ}C$; less than 1% of the peppers were found to be latently infected. To determine the natural timing of infection in the field, 3,200 fruits were wrapped in paper bags and then selectively unwrapped and examined for signs of infection. Field experiments were conducted at Suwon (cvs. Yokkang, Manitta, Olympic) and Asan (cv. Chunhasangsa) in 2008. The 7- to 10-day wrapping periods were July 25-31, July 31-August 7, August 7-15, August 15-24, and August 24-September 3. The 1-to 2-month wrapping periods were from July 4, July 31, and August 15 until harvest (Sept. 3). The controls consisted of 1,712 field-grown non-wrapped fruits. The rates of infection on the various cultivars were Yokkang 55%, Manitta 37%, Olympic 55%, and Chunhasangsa 20%. A distinct period in which anthracnose infection suddenly increased could not be identified; however, attempts to guess the approximate timing of field infection showed that 0-39% of the plants had latent infections, while depending on the cultivar, 8-14% of the plants examined in August and 4-13.5% of the those examined during May-July showed symptoms of infection. Delaying fungicide spraying by 24 and 48 h after artificial infection decreased the rates of infection by 10% and 25-30%, respectively. Chemical control of anthracnose based on a forecasting model should be considered starting from the transplanting stage, with spraying within a day after warning and care being taken not to latently infect apparently healthy pepper fruits.
Significant reduction in disease severity of bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum) on the susceptible tobacco cultivar BY 4 was observed until mid-July in a naturally infested field when bacterial suspensions of avirulent isolate were applied to tobacco root zones at one day before and fourty days after transplanting into the field. However, rapid increase in disease severity after mid-July resulted in the same severity $(70\%)$ as on cultivar BY 4 without the application of the avirulent bacterial suspension at the end of the season. Yield increase in cultivar BY 4 was $35\%$ due to the treatment, resulting in $10\%$ price increase. The suppression me chanism did not appear to be dependent upon the inhibition of the virulent bacterial multiplication by the avirulent bacteria in tobacco rhizosphere soil because of no significant difference in the density of the patho genic bacteria between treated and untreated plant root zones. However. penetration of the virulent bacteria into the root systems and their multiplication in tobacco stem were inhibited remarkably by preinoculation with avirulent one, suggesting that those are related to the suppression of disease incidence.
