  • In a CDMA system, the capacity is variable and mainly depends on multiple access interference. The multiple access interference has a deep relationship with transmitted or received power The capacity of CDMA2000 1x system is considered to be limited by the forward link capacity Different rate data traffic requires different transmitted power and rate controlling enables the system utilize radio resource more efficiently. A very simple rate control algorithm for data calls in CDMA2000 1x system is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, by monitoring the total transmit power, we can simply adjust data rate to channel conditions and efficiently use radio resources. The proposed algorithm is easy to implement in power controlled CDMA systems.

  • The aggregation characteristics of red blood cells (RBCs) were measured using a newly developed light-transmission slit rheometer. Conventional methods of RBC disaggregation such as the rotational Couette system were replaced with a pressure-driven slit flow system with a vibrational mechanism. Using a vibration generator, one can disaggregate the RBC aggregates stored in the slit. While shear stress decreases exponentially, instantaneous pressure and the transmitted light intensity were measured over time. Applying an abrupt shearing flow after disaggregation caused a rapid elongation of the RBCs followed by loss of elongation with the decreasing shear stress. While the shear stress is further decreasing, the RBCs start to re-aggregate and the corresponding transmitted intensity increases with time, from which the aggregation indices can be obtained using a curve-fitting program.

  • Scattered-rays are produced from objects in x-ray diagnosis and the quality of x-ray image is influenced by presence of the scattered-ray. Therefore, constant ways and means to suppress and to eliminate the scattered-ray were devised. Authors made an experimental study on the scattered-ray content in transmitted-ray using acryl phantoms and obtained the results as follows: 1. The scattered-ray content in transmitted-ray is not influenced by filtration and tube voltage. 2. Irradiated field size and the thickness of object are a potent influence to scattered-ray content.

  • ER mount can be used instead of rubber mount in cylindrical shell to improve the vibration and noise performance. The noise radiated by cylindrical shell will be reduced by reducing the force transmitted to the cylindrical shell through ER mount. In this paper LQ control theory is used to reduce the transmitted force to the cylindrical shell. The finite element method of cylindrical shell is formulated by NASTRAN and its vibrating shape is calculated in frequency domain. The noise radiated from the cylindrical shell is calculated by the use of SYSNOISE, the boundary element CAE tool. The vibration of the cylindrical shell and radiated acoustic pressure is compared in case of both controlled and uncontrolled ER mount.

  • An experimental model and a conceptual model are investigated in this paper with both shock tube experiment and numerical technique. The shock-vortex interaction generated by this model is visualized with various methods: holographic interferometry, shodowgraphy, and numerical computation. In terms of shock dynamics, there are two meaningful physics in the present problem. They are reflective wave from the slip layer at the vortex edge and transmitted shock penetrating the vortex core. The discussion in this study is mainly focused on the two kinds of waves contributing to the quadrupolar pressure distribution around the vortex center during the interaction.

  • This paper presents the experimental study for the reduction of transmitted shock waves in smart structures incorporating MR insert. MR fluid is filled within the two aluminum layers and two piezoceramic disks are embedded on the host plate as a transmitter and a receiver of the shock wave. Pulse wave generated by the transmitter is transmitted to the receiver through the MR insert and the plate. By applying magnetic field to the MR insert, the amplitude of the transmitted shock wave is reduced remarkably. The attenuation performance is tested by changing the applied magnetic field on MR inserts in two ways: by changing angle of permanent rubber magnet from 90 to 5 with 5 decrements, by using electromagnet in which magnetic field is controllable. The propagating wave speed of MR insert is also investigated.

  • This study was conducted to determine the sound paths and transmitted sound level in house. An air-conditioner system was selected a typical sound source. The measured transmission loss data shows that the apertures have an significant effect on the transmitted noise and comparable with the existing theoretical data. Therefore the complex aperture was substitute to quantitative apertures approximately. An effective simulation method, ray tracing and mirror image source method, was employed in the prediction of transmitted sound level. The measured results were reflected on the simulated results.

  • A plasticity theory applicable to powdered metal compaction is briefly summarized and its variational form for the finite element analysis is described. The compaction processes of axisymmetric solid cylinder are simulated. For the analysis of the friction effect of solid cylinder, the investigations were performed for different compact geometries. Highlights of the results for given geometries are reported in terms of transmitted pressure on the lower punch from the upper punch through the compact and maximum density variation within the compacts. General conclusions from these simulation results are : (1) the friction coefficient could be selected from the transmitted force data during the single acting compaction test with the simulated results ; and (2) density variatioins within the compacts are very much dependent of the compact geometry such as the height to diameter ratio and the frictional condition between compact and dies.
