$TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by coating and subsequent pyrolysis processes using Titanium-naphthenate as a raw material. $TiO_2$ thin films were made by spin-coating technique on the glass substrates, and heat treated at 45$0^{\circ}C$, The transmittance, refractive index, crystallinity and surface morphology of the $TiO_2$ thin films were measured by UV/Vis spec trophotometer, x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. $TiO_2$thin films on the slide glass showed the trans mittance of 70-90% and refractive index of 2.6 at 420 nm. The results of XRD and SEM showed that the $TiO_2$ thin films exhibited the anatase phase and the thread-like surface morphology.
Glass films in the binary system B2O3-SiO2 and Al2O3-SiO2 were prepared on soda-lime-silica slide glass by the dip-coating technique from TEOS and boric acid or aluminum nitrate. Thickness of the films varying with viscosity and withdrawal speed were measured and effect of composition and firing temperature on the properties such as transmittance and refractive index were investigated. nM2O3.(100-n)SiO2(M=B or Al) films containing up to 20mol% B2O3 and 40mol% Al2O3 were transparent. Maximum transmittance at visible range were obtained for the sample containing 15mol% Ba2O3 and 32.5mol% Al2O3 and heat-treated at 50$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Refractive index of the film containing 15mol% B2O3 was mininum in the B2O3-SiO2 binary system and minimal refractive index was appeared at the film containing 32.5mol% Al2O3. In IP spectra, addition of B2O3 were increased absorption peak intensity of B-O and Si-O-B bond and addition of Al2O3 were decreased absorption peak intensity of Si-O bond, respectively.

A method for designing antireflection (AR) and antistatic (AS) coating layer by the use of conducting polymer as an electrically conductive transparent layer is proposed. The conducting AR coating is composed of four-layer with alternating high and low refractive index layer: silicon dioxide (n=1.44) and titanium dioxide (n=2.02) prepared at low temperature by sol-gel method are used as the low and high refractive index layer, respectively. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) which has the surface resistivity of 10$^4$Ω/$\square$ is used as a conductive layer. Optical constant of each ARAS coating layers such as refractive index and optical thickness were measured by 7he spectroscopic ellipsometer and from the measured optical constants the spectral properties such as reflectance and transmittance were simulated in the risible region. The reflectance of ARAS films on glass substrate was below 1 %R and the transmittance was higher than 95 % in the visible wavelength (400-700 nm). The measured AR spectral properties was very similar to its simulated results.
The diamond-like carbon(DLC) film, as an antireflection layer, is coated on a commerically used Ge window. DLC films are deposited by using an rf(13.56 MHz) plasma CVD. The optimal value of thickness and refractive index of DLC layer has been determined from the computer simulation. IR-transmittances of DLC-coated Ge windows are estimated by measuring FTIR spectra in the wavelength range of$ 2.5{\sim}25{\mu}m$. By coating the DLC film on one side of the Ge window, the transmittance measured at a wavelength of $10{\mu}m$ is about 60 %, while that of the bare Ge is lower than 50 %. Also, a higher transmittance up to about 90 % is obtained by coating the DLC film on both sides of the window. It may be suggested that the further improvement of the IR-transmittance can be achieved by more precisely controlling the thickness and the refractive index of DLC layer and also by adopting various muliti-layer antireflection structures.

A method for estimating the optical characteristics of ceramic materials under high temperature conditions has been applied and evaluated. For that purpose, an interface system combined with a photo-spectrometer was made to keep the samples at the required high temperature. The transmittance of the samples was measured at various temperatures. The measured transmittance data was used to estimate the refractive index using an optical simulation model in conjunction with the Sellmeier equation. The Sellmeier equation parameters were selected by trial-and-error when the transmittance recalculated using the estimated refractive index was compared with the measured transmittance. Furthermore, the estimated refractive indices were checked by a comparison with the reference data at some typical wavelengths at room temperature.
Purpose: The physical and optical characteristics of hydrophilic tinted contact lens containing titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles and the basic hydrogel contact lens material containing 4-iodoaniline were examined. In this study, the utility of titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles as a UV-blocking material for ophthalmologic devices were investigated by measuring the UV transmittance of the produced polymer. Also, titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles only without the addition of 4-iodoaniline in primary contact lens materials by copolymerizing two groups were compared. Methods: For manufacturing hydrogel lens, HEMA, MA, MMA, 4-iodoaniline and a cross-linker EGDMA were copolymerized in the presence of AIBN as an initiator. Also, the titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles was used as additive. After polymerization the physical properties such as water content, refractive index, contact angle and spectral transmittance of produced contact lenses were measured. Results: Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized material showed that the water content, refractive index, UV-B transmittance and contact angle were in the range of 35.01~38.60%, 1.4350~1.4418, $34.15{\sim}57.25^{\circ}$ and 1.0~10.0%, respectively. Titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles is not used as an additive in the experimental group, the results of the measurement showed that the water content, refractive index, contan angle and UV-B transmittance of the hydrogel lens polymer was 34.00~36.80%, 1.4378~1.4420, $40.15{\sim}60.16^{\circ}$ and 1.8~25.0%, respectively. Conclusions: Also, the transmittance for UV light was reduced significantly in combinations containing titanium oxide nanoparticles.

A method for designing antireflection (AR) and antistatic (AS) films by the use of conducting polymer as an electrically conductive transparent layer is proposed. The conducting AR film is composed of four-layer with alternating high and low refractive index layer: silicon dioxide (n=1.44) and titanium dioxide (n=2.02) prepared at low temperature by sol-gel method are used as the low and high refractive index layer, respectively. The 3,4-polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) which has the sheet resistance of 10$^4$$\Omega$/$\square$ is used as a conductive layer. Optical constant of ARAS film was measured by the spectroscopic ellipsometer and from the measured optical constants the spectral properties such as reflectance and transmittance were simulated in the visible region. The reflectance of ARAS films on glass substrate was below 0.8 %R and the transmittance was higher than 95 % in the visible wavelength (400-700 nm). The measured AR spectral properties was very similar to its simulated results.
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) base films with high light transmittance have been used for the substrate of various functional films in the flat panel display. The effects of the reflective index of coated films, the roughness of the film surface and the content of inorganic silica particles on the light transmittance were studied in this article. Light transmittance was increased by coating a water soluble resin with a low reflective index at an optimum thickness. The roughness of the film did not affect light transmittance when the Ra of the film surface was less than a quarter of the wavelength of incident light. Inorganic silica particles decreased light transmittance due to their absorbance and scattering of the incident light.
Purpose: To evaluate ultraviolet (UV) blocking characteristics of transparent and tinted ophthalmic lenses. Methods: The transmittance spectra of ophthalmic lenses were measured using the method suggested in ANSI Z80.1 standard. Transmittance percentage were calculated for each lens for UV (200~380 nm; UVA, UVB, UVC) and blue light portions (380~400 nm) of spectrum. Results: The results indicate that transparent plastic lenses with middle, high refractive index and tinted plastic lenses had superior UV blocking characteristics at UV radiation while UV blocker-untreated lenses such as crown glasses and CR39 did not. All except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens was not effectively blocked blue light. Conclusions: Crown glass and CR39 lenses need to treat UV blockers to protect eyes from UV. Also, all lenes except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens need to treat blue light blockers for protecting from blue light.
High-transmittance film was coated by using spherical silica nano colloids. Silica colloid sol was preservred between two inclined slide glasses by capillary force, and particles were stacked to form a film onto the substrate as the upper glass was sliding. As the sliding speed increased, the thickness of the film decreased and light transmittance varied. The microstructure observed by SEM showed that silica particles were nearly close packed, which enabled the calculation of the effective refractive index of the film. The film thickness calculated from the wavelength of maximum transmittance and the effective refractive index was well coincided with the thickness observed by SEM and measured by profiler. The maximum transmittance of $94.7\%$ was obtained. This means that $97.4\%$ of transmittance or $1.3\%$ of reflectance can be achieved by simple process if both sides of the substrate are coated.
