Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied for the simulation of compressible flat plate boundary with Reynolds number up to 5 X 10$^{5}$ . Numerical examples include shock/boundary layer interaction and boundary layer transition, aiming future application to the analysis of transonic fan/compressor cascades. The present LES code uses hybrid com-pact/WENO scheme for the spatial discretization and compact diagonalized implicit scheme for the time integration. The present code successfully predicted the bypass transition of subsonic boundary layer. As for supersonic turbulent boundary layer, mean and fluctuation velocity of the attached boundary, as well as the evolution of the friction coefficient and the displacement thickness both upstream and downstream of the separation region are all in good agreement with experiment. The separation point also agreed with the experiment. In the simulation of the shock/laminar boundary layer interaction, the dependence of the transition upon the shock strength is reproduced qualitatively, but the extent of the separation region is overpredicted. These numerical examples show that LES can predict the behavior of boundary layer including transition and shock interaction, which are hardly managed by the conventional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes approach, although there needs to be more effort before achieving quantitative agreement.
When an axisymmetric body moves through air the boundary layer near the stagnation region remains laminar and subsequently it goes through transition to turbulent. The experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of wall pressure fluctuations at the initial stage of boundary layer flow including transition. Flush-mounted microphones are used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations at the transition and turbulent boundary layer region of a blunt axisymmetric body in the low noise wind tunnel. It if found from this study that the wall pressure fluctuations in the transition region is higher than that in the turbulent region.
This paper is about the code that realizes the $e^N$-Method for boundary-layer transition prediction. The $e^N$-Method based on the linear stability theory is applied to predicting boundary-layer transition frequently. This paper deals with the construction of code, stability analysis and the calculation of N-factor. The results of transition prediction using the $e^N$-Method for flat plate/cone compressible boundary-layers are presented.

Transition location of boundary layers over airfoils is predicted by using PSE(Parabolized Stability Equations) and $e^N$-method. Growth rates of disturbances are obtained from the PSE analysis and the N-factor curves are calculated by integrating the growth rates. The computational code developed in the present study is validated by comparing the computed results with the well known data for the cases of flat plate boundary layers and airfoils. Predictions of transition location are made for the boundary layers over NACA0012, NLF(1)-0414F, and NLF(1)-0416 airfoil. Predicted transition locations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

A new cross disciplinary conception of transitional aero-optics is built up during analyzing and measuring the linkage between the hypersonic boundary layer transition on a flat plate and the jittering characteristics of the small-aperture beam through that boundary layer. Based on that conception, the Small-Aperture Beam Technique (SABT) and high-speed Imaging Camera System (ICS) used in aero-optical studies are considered as new techniques for the assessment of the hypersonic transition in the boundary layer on a flat plate. In the FD-20 gun tunnel, for the free stream parameters with Mach number of 8 and unit Reynolds number of $1{\times}10^7$ (1/m), those two optical techniques are used to measure the jitter of the small-aperture beam. At the same free stream parameters, the distribution of the heat transfer along the centerline of the flat plate is also measured by the thin film resistance gauge technique. The results show the similarity of the increase trend between the heat transfer and the jitter of the small-aperture beam in the transitional region. It helps us to surmise that it may be feasible to diagnose the transition in a hypersonic boundary layer on a flat plate by means of those above optical techniques.
Characterization of wind flows over a complex terrain, especially mountain-gorge terrain (referred to as the very complex terrain with rolling mountains and deep narrow gorges), is an important issue for design and operation of long-span bridges constructed in this area. In both wind tunnel testing and numerical simulation, a transition section is often used to connect the wind tunnel floor or computational domain bottom and the boundary top of the terrain model in order to generate a smooth flow transition over the edge of the terrain model. Although the transition section plays an important role in simulation of wind field over complex terrain, an appropriate shape needs investigation. In this study, two principles for selecting an appropriate shape of boundary transition section were proposed, and a theoretical curve serving for the mountain-gorge terrain model was derived based on potential flow theory around a circular cylinder. Then a two-dimensional (2-D) simulation was used to compare the flow transition performance between the proposed curved transition section and the traditional ramp transition section in a wind tunnel. Furthermore, the wind velocity field induced by the curved transition section with an equivalent slope of $30^{\circ}$ was investigated in detail, and a parameter called the 'velocity stability factor' was defined; an analytical model for predicting the velocity stability factor was also proposed. The results show that the proposed curved transition section has a better flow transition performance compared with the traditional ramp transition section. The proposed analytical model can also adequately predict the velocity stability factor of the wind field.

In this study, the transition Reynolds number of compressible axi-symmetric sharp cone boundary layer is predicted by using a linear stability theory and the -method. The compressible linear stability equation for sharp cone boundary layer was derived from the governing equations on the body-intrinsic axi-symmetric coordinate system. The numerical analysis code for the stability equation was developed based on a second-order accurate finite-difference method. Stability characteristics and amplification rate of two-dimensional second mode disturbance for the sharp cone boundary layer were calculated from the analysis code and the numerical code was validated by comparing the results with experimental data. Transition prediction was performed by application of the -method with N=10. From comparison with wind tunnel experiments and flight tests data, capability of the transition prediction of this study is confirmed for the sharp cone boundary layers which have an edge Mach number between 4 and 8. In addition, effect of wall cooling on the stability of disturbance in the boundary layer and transition position is investigated.

Effects of wake-passing orientation and frequency on the wake-induced boundary layer transition on a NACA0012 airfoil are investigated. The wakes are generated by rotating cylinders clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) around the airfoil. Time- and phase-averaged streamwise mean velocities and turbulent fluctuations are measured with a single hot-wire probe. Wall skin frictions are estimated by the Computational Preston Tube Method (CPM). The pressure distribution on the airfoil is different according to the wake-passing orientation and frequency. Turbulent patches are generated in the laminar boundary layer due to the passing wake and the boundary layer becomes temporarily transitional. The transition process is significantly affected by the pressure gradient and the turbulent patches. For the receding wake, the turbulent patches propagate more rapidly than those for the approaching wake because adverse pressure gradient becomes larger. As the frequency increases, onset location of transition moles upstream and the boundary layer near the trailing edge becomes more transitional.

It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boundary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experiment we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and find the relations between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.

There has been studied a lot of two dimensional hydrofoil sections for the boundary layers. This paper suggests that the plaiable roughness effects on boundary layer transition region of suction side for NACA 4412 hydrofoil sections provided by auxieiary shape factor and lag-entrainment effects. These results show that the laminar sepration. Transition and end of transition of the boundary layer due to pitting roughness effects, to the foil Reynold's number as well as to the angle of attack were delayed a little. And comparisons with valuable the other calculations and measurements show qualitative agreements.
