  • This paper deals with the design rule and performance results of the transient voltage blocking devices (TBD) for low-voltage mains on shipboard. The proposed TBD consists of metal oxide varistors (MOV) and L-C filter to improve noise-elimination performance. Three kinds of TBDs are fabricated and tested by using a combination surge generator which can produce the standard impulse current of 8/20${\mu}$s 2.1kA. As a reults, the proposed TBD with series L-C filter has more excellent transient blocking and noise reduction performance than the conventional TBDs.

  • Due to the miniaturization of electrical components and assembles on signal and telecommunication circuits, transient overvoltages caused by switching operation or lightning surge has become more interesting concern to the field of electrical engineering. This paper describes the development of transient voltage blocking devices (TBDs) that can protect sensitive signal and telecommunication devices from overvoltages. Two kinds of TBDs are designed and tested by using a combination surge generator which can produce the standard impulse current of 8/20${\mu}$s 2.1kA according to the IEC 1000-4-5 standard. From the simulation and experimental reults, it is confirmed that the proposed TBD has an enough protection performance in low insertion loss and tight clamping voltage.

  • We present a study on the reflection of optically controlled microwave pulses from non uniform plasma layers in semiconductors. The transient response of the microwave pulses in different plasma layers has been evaluated by means of the reflection function of dielectric microstrip lines. The lines were used with an open-ended termination containing an optically induced plasma region, which was illuminated by a light source. The reflection characteristics impedance resulting from the presence of plasma is evaluated by means of the equivalent transmission line model. We have analyzed the variation of the transient response in a 0.01 cm layer with a surface frequency in the region of 128 GHz. In the reflection the variation of the diffusion length $L_D$ is large compared with the absorption depth $1/{\alpha}_l$. The variation of the characteristic response of the plasma layer with differentially localized pulses has been evaluated analytically. The change of the reflection amplitude has been observed at depths of 0.1 cm, 0.01 cm and $0.1{\times}10^{-5}$ cm respectively.

  • Transient acoustic pressure in the near field of an impacted plate carries information that can be utilized for recovering the impact force history. The inverse calculation approach using BEM-based NAH, which is conventionally used for time harmonic excitation, can be applied for reconstructing the transient waves using the principle of Fourier transform and spectral analysis. Then, using the recovered velocity in normal direction of the plate surface, the corresponding structural intensity can be obtained and the identification of input power can be performed. However, several manipulations should be given to overcome numerical artifacts, such as aliasing and erratic oscillation at discontinuity, and to suppress the effect of noise. Experiment using a simply supported plate is presented for demonstration purpose.

  • The complexity of modern power systems often makes it impractical to model it in its entirety for electromagnetic transient studies. Therefore areas outside the immediate area of interest must be represented by some form of Frequency Dependent Network Equivalent (FDNE). The advantage of using z-domain fitting is that it can be directly implemented in a digital simulation program without any loss of accuracy. Fitting in the s-domain always requires "discretizing" a continuous system and the inherent approximations. This paper presents z-domain rational function formulation and demonstrates the use of it for the assessment of the transient response of the Lower South Island of New Zealand. Moreover by using a well publicized test system and providing complete information on the developed FDNE coefficients other researchers easily benchmark their work against this.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for determining critical generator lists using accelerating power and synchronizing power coefficient (SPC), and critical generator group (CGG) from CGG candidates, which is a combination of critical generators. The accurate determination of CGG provides a more accurate energy margin while providing system operator with information of possible unstable generator group. Classical transient energy function (TEF) method selects the critical generators with big corrected kinetic energy of each generator at the moment of fault removal. However, the generator with small acceleration after fault, that is, the generator with small corrected kinetic energy, is also likely to belong to CGG if the generator has small synchronizing power. The proposed algorithm has been verified to be effective compared with the classical TEF method. We utilized the power system of Korean Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) as a test system.

  • This paper presents a method for classification of underwater transient signals using, which employs a binary image pattern of the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients(MFCC) as a feature vector and a neural network as a classifier. A feature vector is obtained by taking DCT and 1-bit quantization for the square matrix of the MFCC sequences. The classifier is a feed-forward neural network having one hidden layer and one output layer, and a back propagation algorithm is used to update the weighting vector of each layer. Experimental results with some underwater transient signals demonstrate that the proposed method is very promising for classification of underwater transient signals.

  • A low dropout regulator (LDO) with fast transient responses is presented. The proposed LDO eliminates the trade-off between slew rate and unity gain bandwidth, which are the key parameters for fast transient responses. In the proposed buffer, by changing the slew current path, the slew rate and unity gain bandwidth can be controlled independently. Implemented in $0.18-{\mu}m$ high voltage CMOS, the proposed LDO shows up to 200 mA load current with 0.2 V dropout voltage for $1{\mu}F$ output capacitance. The measured maximum transient output voltage variation, minimum quiescent current at no load condition, and maximum unity gain frequency are 24 mV, $7.5{\mu}A$, and higher than 1 MHz, respectively.

  • In this paper, the stress and transient currents associated with the on and off time of applied voltage were used to measure the density and distribution of high voltage stress induced traps in thin silicon oxide films. The transient currents were due to the discharging of traps generated by high stress voltage in the silicon oxides. The trap distributions were relatively uniform new both cathode and anode interface. The trap densities were dependent on the stress polarity. The stress generated trap distributions were relatively uniform the order of 1011~1021[states/eV/cm2] after a stress voltage. It appear that the stress and transient current that flowed when the stress voltage were applied to the oxide was caused by carriers tunneling through the silicon oxide by the high voltage stress generated traps.

  • The LASER Amplifier is treated in the manner of a Fabry-Perot Resonator with an active media, five layers are considered: air, reflector, active medium(ruby), reflector and air. One dimensional scalar wave equations are derived using the method of boundary value probrems in which it is assumed that incident coherent radiation falls normally on the surface wall. All equations are treated from the transient analysis point of view using the Laplace transform nethods, and are arranged steady state region as an amplifier and transient region as a self excited oscillator. Also some remarks are given on the design problem of LASER amplifier in connection with the transient terms involved.
