Infrared (IR) detectors are widely used for many applications, such as temperature measurement, intruder and fire detection, robotics and industrial equipment, thermoelstic stress analysis, medical diagnostics, and chemical analysis. Quantum detectors commonly need to be refrigerated below 80 K, and thus a cooling system should be equipped together with the detector system. The cooling load, which should be removed by the cooling system to maintain the nominal operating temperature of the detector, critically depends on the insulation efficiency of the cryochamber housing the detector. Thermal analysis of cryochamber includes the conduction heat transfer through a cold well, the gases conduction and gas outgassing, as well as radiation heat transfer, The transient cooling characteristics of an infrared detector cryochamber are investigated experimentally in the present study. The transient cooling load increases as the gas pressure is increased. Gas pressure becomes significant as the cooling process proceeds. Cool down time is also increased as the gas pressure is increased. It is also found that natural convection effects on cool down time become significant when the gas pressure is increased.
It is derived for the temperature profile in a cylindrical and planar shape capillary pumped loop evaporators subject to a uniform heat flux prior to the initiation of boiling using the finite difference method. The results of the analysis allow for the determination of applied power levels for which nucleation is likely to occur only within the vapor grooves of the evaporator while maintaining subcooling in the liquid core, thereby increasing the likelihood of a successful startup. Also, limits are found for which additional increases in the applied heat flux do not increase the temperature difference between the vapor grooves and the wick-liquid core interface. Several advantages of larger diameter evaporators observed experimentally in startup are explained and quantified by the model. This analysis is appropriate for standard capillary pumped loop evaporators during a fully-flooded startup as well as starter pump designs and loop heat pipes.
In this paper, the heat transfer coefficient measurement techniques using TSP(temperature sensitive paint) were introduced and the results of a comparative study on the heat transfer coefficient measurement by steady state and transient TSP techniques were discussed. The distributions of heat transfer coefficient by a single $60^{\circ}$ inclined impingement jet on a flat surface were measured by both techniques. Tested Reynolds number based on the jet diameter (d) was 30,000 and the distance between jet exit and target plate (L) was fixed at 10d. Results showed that the measured Nusselt number by both techniques indicated significant difference except near the center of impingement jet. Also, the heat transfer coefficients measured by the transient TSP technique were affected by the reference temperature of the jet. Based on the measured data, characteristics of both TSP techniques were analyzed and suggestions for applying them were also given.
For the Korean design of the PCCS (passive containment cooling system) in an innovative PWR, the overall thermal resistance around a condenser tube is dominated by the heat transfer coefficient of steam condensation on the exterior surface. It has been reported, however, that the calculated heat transfer coefficients by thermal-hydraulic system codes were much lower than measured data in separate effect tests. In this study, a new empirical model of steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas was implemented into the MARS-KS 1.4 code to replace the conventional Colburn-Hougen model. The selected correlation had been developed from condensation test data obtained at the JERICHO (JNU Experimental Rig for Investigation of Condensation Heat transfer On tube) facility, and considered the effect of the Grashof number for naturally circulating gas mixture and the curvature of the condenser tube. The modified MARS-KS code was applied to simulate the transient response of the containment equipped with the PCCS to the large-break loss-of-coolant accident. The heat removal performances of the PCCS and corresponding evolution of the containment pressure were compared to those calculated via the original model. Various thermal-hydraulic parameters associated with the natural circulation operation through the heat transport circuit were also investigated.

In the boundary layer of supersonic or hypersonic vehicles, there is the conversion from kinetic energy to thermal energy, called aerodynamic heating. Aerodynamic heating has to be considered to design supersonic vehicles, because it induces severe heat flux to surface. Transient heat transfer analysis with CFD is used to predict thermal response of vehicles, however transient heat transfer analysis needs excessive computing powers. Loosely coupled method is widely used for evaluating thermal response, however it needs to be revised for overestimated heat flux. In this research, quasi-transient method, which is combined loosely coupled method and conjugate heat transfer analysis, is proposed for evaluating thermal response with efficiency and reliability. Defining reference time of splitting flight scenario for transient simulation is important on accuracy of quasi-transient method, however there is no algorithm to determine. Therefore the research suggests the algorithm with various flow conditions to define reference time. Supersonic flow field of blunt body with constant acceleration is calculated to evaluate quasi-transient method. Temperature difference between transient and quasi-transient method is about 11.4%, and calculation time reduces 28 times for using quasi-transient method.
Longitudinal and transverse normal zone propagation in the superconducting coil are analyzed and propagation velocity is derived from the heat balance equations in the propagating boundary region. Transverse velocity is nearly $10^{-2}$ order of longitudinal velocity. Propagation velocity ie linearly proportional to the transport current. Increasing lamp current speeds up longitudinal velocity by 0.279 m/s under the applied field of 2T. Transient heat transfer has a significant effect on normal zone propagation velocity and it decreases longitudinal velocity by 4.2 m/s under the applied field of 2T as being compared to steady-state heat transfer.
In this paper, 2-D experiment and steady-state computational fluid analysis were conducted for measuring the hear transfer coefficient of pintle type controllable thruster in high pressure and temperature. In case of 2-D experiment, transient liquid crystal technique was used for measuring heat transfer coefficient for the 2-D pintle model. The experimental result was used to validate the CFD result. The CFD results well predicted the heat transfer coefficient on the pintle surface except the nozzle downstream region, where the results by CFD was higher than experimental results. The CFD results were also compared with the result by Bartz equation and the it was shown that the Bartz equation overestimated the heat transfer coefficient on the nozzle throat as much as 80%.

In this paper research result of transient thermal stress analysis of power plant turbine rotors for life prediction under severs operating conditions is presented. Galerkin's recurrence scheme is used for numerical solution of discretized FEM equation of transient heat conduction equation. Boundary conditions for the equation and operating conditions are intensively investigated for accurate life prediction of turbine rotors in operation. A computer program for on-site application is developed and tested. Distribution of thermal stress in turbine rotors during various operating condition is analyzed with the program and it is found that the peak thermal stress appears during cold stage conditions at the first stage of high pressure rotors.
This paper proposes a nonlinear computational modeling approach for the behaviors of structural systems subjected to fire. The proposed modeling approach consists of fire dynamics analysis, nonlinear transient-heat transfer analysis for predicting thermal distributions, and thermomechanical analysis for structural behaviors. For concretes, transient heat formulations are written considering temperature dependent heat conduction and specific heat capacity and included within the thermomechanical analyses. Also, temperature dependent stress-strain behaviors including compression hardening and tension softening effects are implemented within the analyses. The proposed modeling technique for transient heat and thermomechanical analyses is first validated with experimental data of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to high temperatures, and then applied to a bridge model. The bridge model is generated to simulate the fire incident occurred by a gas truck on April 29, 2007 in Oakland California, USA. From the simulation, not only temperature distributions and deformations of the bridge can be found, but critical locations and time frame where collapse occurs can be predicted. The analytical results from the simulation are qualitatively compared with the real incident and show good agreements.

Each part of drum brake system is loaded by continual mechanical force and thermal force every time of braking, so enough strength and stability are required. Thermal characteristic is one of the important factors in drum brake systems design. This paper presents the thermal performance such as temperature distribution and thermal contact stress of drum brake system considering several braking patterns; 80th heat braking test mode, heat fade braking test mode, general road mode, steep slope road mode and off road mode. Transient heat transfer analysis and Thermo elastic contact analysis is executed to obtain the temperature distribution, and to evaluate thermal stress of drum brake by using ABAQUS/Standard code. This procedure of analysis can effectively be used to improve the quality problem of brake system and to get design guideline of the new product.
