  • In a port terminal, containers are stored and transshipped by yard tractors and crane vehicles. For operation efficiency of the terminal, location information of these vehicles is an essential factor. However, most of port terminals try to estimate location of these assets using indirect methods such as event tracking of shipping or unshipping containers. Because these kinds of events are rarely occurred, location of the event includes seriously locating error compared to a real location of vehicle. In this paper, we propose a real-time asset tracking system to obtain accurate and reliable location of terminal assets. The proposed system overcomes a location estimation error caused by container stacks which interrupt wireless communication. In order to mitigate uncertainty and increase accuracy of location estimation, we designed hardwares and multi-step locating system to resolve additional preblems. We implemented system components, and installed these at a port environment for evaluation. The result shows superiority of the system that the accuracy is approximately 5.87 meters (CEP).

  • Agricultural gear reducers are used in a variety of agricultural machinery designs such as in agricultural tractors and transport cars, and even greenhouses. For greenhouses, a gear reducer is used to control windows on the side and the roof. Gear reducers for agricultural applications are designed using the empirical method because of the lack of a standard for experimentation. Simulation is necessary for the optimal design of an agricultural gear reducer. There are many advantages to this optimization such as low-cost maintenance, reduced size, and weight. In this study, bending and contact safety factor simulation for the gear reducer of a greenhouse was conducted by decreasing the face widths of helical gear shaft 2 and shaft 3 from 30.8 and 30 mm, respectively, at an interval of 4 mm. The bending and contact safety factors were calculated using AGMA standard. Simulation results showed that bending and contact safety factors decreased rapidly when the face width of the helical gear on shaft 2 was 30 mm and the face width of helical gear on shaft 3 decreased from 30.8 mm to 26.8 mm, suggesting that it would be safe to reduce the face width of the helical gear on shaft 3 to 26.8 mm. The reduction of the face width also reduced the weight of the agricultural gear. This study suggests that the agricultural gear reducer safety factor decreases as the face width decreases.

  • This study was carried out to determine the optimum size and number of farm machines for various sizes of land coverage of the cooperative farm machinery utilization systems in Korea-namely Saemaul Mechanized Farming Group (SMFG). Fifty-one SMFG were selected from 8 counties in Chonnam province, and ownership, operation and management of farm machinery were surveyed. Annual covered area, cost and the break-even-point area of farm machinery were analyzed on the bases of the surveyed data and the present governmental subsidy policy, and then the optimum level of farm machinery ownership was determined. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The break-even-point areas of the tractors of 22-23ps, 28ps and 47-50ps were estimated as 12.1ha, 15.3ha and 21.6ha, respectively. The optimum size of a tractor for land sizes of 10-20ha, 20-30ha, and 30-40ha were estimated as 22-23ps, 28ps, and 47-50ps, respectively. 2. The break-even-point area of a rice transplanter was estimated as 3.3ha. The optimum numbers of rice transplanter for land sizes of 10-20ha, 20-30ha, and 30-40ha were estimated as 2,3, and 4, respectively. 3. The break-even-point areas of a speed sprayer (attached on power tiller) and a power sprayer were estimated as 114.6ha and 15.3ha, respectively. • Purpose: Path planning and tracking algorithms applicable to various agricultural operations, such as tillage, planting, and spraying, are needed to generate steering angles for auto-guidance tractors to track a point ahead on the path. An optimal coverage path algorithm can enable a vehicle to effectively travel across a field by following a sequence of parallel paths with fixed spacing. This study proposes a path generation and tracking algorithm for an auto-guided Korean tractor with a tillage implement that generates a path with C-type turns and follows the generated path in a paddy field. A mathematical model was developed to generate a waypoint path for a tractor in a field. This waypoint path generation model was based on minimum tractor turning radius, waypoint intervals and LBOs (Limit of Boundary Offsets). At each location, the steering angle was calculated by comparing the waypoint angle and heading angle of the tractor. A path following program was developed with Labview-CVI to automatically read the waypoints and generate steering angles for the tractor to proceed to the next waypoint. A feasibility test of the developed program for real-time path tracking was performed with a mobile platform traveling on flat ground. The test results showed that the developed algorithm generated the desired path and steering angles with acceptable accuracy.

  • Nowadays automatic transmission equipped vehicles prevail in construction and agricultural equipment due to their convenience in driving and operation. Though domestic vehicle manufacturers install imported electronic controlled transmissions at present, overseas products will be replaced by domestic ones in the near future owing to development efforts over the past 10 years. For passenger cars, there are many kinds of shift control algorithms that enhance the shift quality such as feedback and learning control. However, since shift control technologies for heavy duty vehicles are not highly developed, it is possible to improve the shift quality with an organized control method. A feedback control algorithm for neutral-into-gear shift, which is enabled during the inertia phase for the master clutch slip speed to track the slip speed reference, is proposed based on the power transmission structure of TH100. The performance of the feedback shift control is verified by a vehicle test which is implemented with firmware embedded TCU. As the master clutch engages along the predetermined speed trajectory, it can be concluded that the shift quality can be managed by a shift time control parameter. By extending the proposed feedback algorithm for neutral-into-gear shift to gear change and shuttle shift, it is expected that the quality of the shift can be improved.

  • The agricultural tractor is a multi-purpose vehicle, which is frequently used in the agricultural field. It must be highly reliable in terms of human safety. Design and analysis of agricultural tractors must be performed using actual agricultural workload to maintain high reliability. Additionally, the frequency with which various components and systems are used must also be taken into consideration. In this study, a tractor is built to measure its workload in the actual field. Further, the measured load was analyzed for various farming tasks. The range of ratios of consumed power to engine power was measured to be 42.6%-87.2%, 75.1%-97%, 26.5%-59.2% for a plow, rotary, and harvest tasks, respectively. The results were fed into a transmission simulation model to analyze the strength and life of the transmission components. We conclude that a more reliable product can be constructed by incorporating the transmission analyses using the actual load.

  • The goal of this study was to develop an accelerated life test for an implement working pump for an agricultural tractor. The field experiments were conducted to measure the load of an implement working pump during major agricultural operations such as plow tillage, rotary tillage, baler operations, and wrapping operations. The measurement system for an implement working pump load was constructed using a pressure sensor, the engine rotational speed, and the hitch pump displacement. The measured implement working pump load was calculated as an equivalent load for each agricultural operation using the Palmgren-Miner rule, which is a cumulative damage method. The equivalent load was calculated using the total load data and peak load data when the total data included the operation of an implement working. The annual usage time of the agricultural tractor was applied to develop two integrated equivalent loads. The acceleration factor was calculated to develop an accelerated life test and was calculated from the two integrated equivalent loads, the maximum pressure, and the flow rate conditions of the hitch pump. In Korea, the warranty life of a tractor is 2,736 hours, and the time required for the test to guarantee the operational life of tractors was calculated as 7,561 hours. The acceleration factors were calculated as 453.6 and 38.3, respectively, from the total load data and peak load data. The fatigue test time can be shortened by 16.7 and 197.4 hours according to the result of the acceleration factors.

  • In this study, the feasibility of alternative tractor Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS) designed to evaluate conditions required for testing was confirmed. In accordance with Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) code 4, the required load energy of the tractor ROPS was determined. First, the tractor ROPS test was performed and a repeated test was performed using a simplified ROPS as an alternative tractor ROPS. The test procedure is first rearward, second lateral, and last forward based on ROPS. The load test device consists of a load cell that measures force and a LVDT that measures deformation. Precision was confirmed by calculating the relative standard deviation of the simplified ROPS repeated test. Accuracy was analyzed by calculating the mean relative error between the mean measured values in the simplified ROPS test and the tractor ROPS test. As a result, the relative standard deviation was less than 2.5% for force and 3.3% for maximum deformation overall, showed the highest precision in lateral load. The mean relative error value for force measured at the lateral load of simplified ROPS was 0.5%, showing the highest accuracy. In the front load test, the mean relative error of maximum deformation was 20.5%, showing the lowest accuracy. The mean relative error (MRE) was high in the forward load test was because of structural factors of the ROPS. The simplified ROPS model is expected to save money and time spent preparing tractors.

  • An important operational goal of a container terminal is to maximize the efficiency of the operation of quay cranes (QCs) that load and/or unload containers onto and from vessels. While the maximization of the efficiency of the QC operation requires minimizing the delay of yard tractors (YT) that transport containers between the storage yard and QCs, the delay is often inevitable because of traffic congestion. In this paper, we propose a method for learning a model that predicts traffic speed in a terminal using only YT operation data, even though the YT traffic is mixed with that of external trucks. Without any information on external truck traffic, we could still make a reasonable traffic forecast because the YT operation data contains information on the YT routes in the near future. The results of simulation experiments showed that the model learned by the proposed method could predict traffic speed with significant accuracy.
