  • In this paper, track tension estimation methods are developed for tracked vehicles which are subject to various maneuvering tasks such as turning and pivoting on flat road. The information of the track tension is very important for the tracked vehicles because the track tension is closely related to the maneuverability and the durability of the tracked vehicles. Kinetic models for the six road-wheels are obtained and used for calculating the track tension around the sprocket. This method does not require the tuning of the turning resistance, which makes it difficult to estimate the track tension in turning. The tension estimation performance of the proposed methods is verified through the simulation of the Multi-body Dynamics tool. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under steering and pivoting of the tracked vehicles.

  • With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution, autonomous driving technology is being commercialized in various industries. However, research on autonomous driving so far has focused on platforms with wheel-type platform. Research on a tracked platform is at a relatively inadequate step. Since the tracked platform has a different driving and steering method from the wheel-type platform, the existing research cannot be applied as it is. Therefore, a path-tracking algorithm suitable for a tracked platform is required. In this paper, we studied a path-tracking algorithm for a tracked platform based on a GPS sensor. The existing Pure Pursuit algorithm was applied in consideration of the characteristics of the tracked platform. And to compensate for "Cutting Corner", which is a disadvantage of the existing Pure Pursuit algorithm, an algorithm that changes the LAD according to the curvature of the path was developed. In the existing pure pursuit algorithm that used a tracked platform to drive a path including a right-angle turn, the RMS path error in the straight section was 0.1034 m and the RMS error in the turning section was measured to be 0.2787 m. On the other hand, in the variable LAD algorithm, the RMS path error in the straight section was 0.0987 m, and the RMS path error in the turning section was measured to be 0.1396 m. In the turning section, the RMS path error was reduced by 48.8971%. The validity of the algorithm was verified by measuring the path error by tracking the path using a tracked robot platform.

  • The characteristics of the track are important concerning the mobility of tracked vehicles. It can be represented in terms of the track tension and maintaining the track tension adequately guarantees the stable and improved driving of the tracked vehicles. The track tension must be known in order to be controlled and it needs to be estimated in real-time because it is difficult to be measured. The tension around idler and sprocket can be controlled by the frizzy logic control system base on the estimated values. Dynamic Track Tensioning System(DTTS) which is estimating and controlling the track tension. In this paper, simulation tool is developed in order to apply the DTTS to real battle tanks. To construct the simulation tool, the Modeling the tracked vehicle, constructing estimation system, and designing controller should be achieved first and then all subsystem should be organized in one. The simulation tool make the RecurDyn model of tracked vehicle, which is plant model, and the control system exchange their data simultaneously. Simulation with many kinds of driving conditions and road conditions is carried out and the results are interpreted. The interpretation provides necessary information to apply the DTTS to real battle tanks.

  • In this paper, to estimate the effectiveness of the tractive performance prediction model(TPPMTV98) which was developed to predict the tractive performance of flexible tracked vehicles in previous paper, the experimental substantiation of the TPPMTV98 were conducted with the reconstructed tracked vehicle on the loam soil with the moisture content of 18.92%, and bevameter was constructed in order to measure soil properties in situ. The drawbar pulls measure were compared with predicted ones. As a result, the predicted drawbar pulls by the TPPMTV98 were well matched to the measured ones. Such results implied that the TPPMTV98 could well estimate the drawbar pulls at given soil conditions, and would be very useful as a simulation tool for designing a flexible tracked vehicle and predicting its tractive performance.

  • This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic analysis of an underwater tracked vehicle, operating on extremely soft soil of the deep-seafloor. The vehicle is assumed as a rigid-body with 6-dof. The orientation of the vehicle is defined by four Euler parameters. To solve the motion equations of the vehicle, the Newmark numerical integrator is used in the incremental-iterative algorithm. The normalization constraint of Euler parameters is satisfied by using of a sequential updating method. The hydrodynamic force and moment are included in the tracked vehicle's dynamics. The hydrodynamic effects on the performance of tracked vehicles are investigated through numerical simulations.

  • The role of suspension system in tracked vehicles cannot be overestimated because the driving and running conditions of such vehicles are very severe. It reduces the vibration and shock which are generated by road profile in running condition. As the tracked vehicle's running speed increases, more undesired vibrations can be generated by road profile particularly in the situation of field running. Because, the excessive vibration can harm the operation ability of crewmen and stability of complex equipments, the maximum running speed is limited. In this study, to improve the performance of the tracked vehicle system, we examined the feasibility of using the active preview control for the tracked vehicle´s suspension system. First, we developed ...

  • In case of high speed and high mobility multibody tracked vehicle, it is hard to develop the realtime simulation model for track tension control because of the hundreds of highly nonlinear equations. In order to design more trustworthy realtime simulator for track tension control, it is necessary to use off-line tracked vehicle model. In this study, a step by step procedure is presented to develop realtime simulation model based on off-line tracked vehicle model. Simulation results show that modified off-line multibody tracked vehicle model can be used for real time simulation to control the track tension.

  • A simplified 3D dynamic model of tracked vehicle crawling on cohesive soft soil is investigated. The vehicle is assumed as rigid body with 6-dof. Cohesive soft soil is modeled through relations: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear to dynamic sinkage. Equations of motion of vehicle are derived with respect to the body-fixed coordinates. In order to investigate 3D transient dynamics of tracked vehicle, Newmark's method is employed based on incremental-iterative algorithm. 3D dynamic simulations are conducted for a tracked vehicle model and steering performance is investigated.
