In order to reveal the independent relationship between track irregularity and wind loads, the stochastic characteristics of train-bridge coupling systems subjected to wind loads were investigated by the multi-sample calculation. The vehicle was selected as 23 degrees of freedom dynamical model, and the bridge was described by three-dimensional finite element model. It was assumed that the wind loads were random processes with strong spatial correlation, while the track irregularities were stationary random ones. As a case study, a high-speed train running on a cable-stayed bridge subjected to wind loads was studied. The effect of rail irregularities was deemed to be independent of the effect of wind excitations on the coupling system in the same wind circumstance for the same project, leading to the conclusion that the effect of wind loads and moving vehicle could be calculated separately. The variance results of the stochastic responses of vehicle-bridge coupling system under the action of wind loads and rail irregularities together were equivalent to the sum of the variance of the responses induced by each excitation. Therefore, when one of the input excitations is different, only the effect of changed loads needs to be assessed. Moreover, the new calculated results were combined with the effect of unchanged loads to present the stochastic response of coupling system subjected to the different excitations, reducing the cost of computations. The stochastic characteristics, the CFD (cumulative distribution function) of the coupling system with different wind velocities, vehicle speed, and vehicle marshalling were studied likewise.

Ride comfort of a vehicle can be utilized to maintain the track geometry and track irregularities because ride comfort of the rolling stock is affected by the characteristics of the vehicle and track. Ride comfort was evaluated according to the measured floor acceleration data of vehicles for a Korean high speed line as well as European high speed lines using Continuous comfort method which can be applied to track maintenance. The exceedance distribution of the ride comfort was quantitatively analyzed by the vehicle speed, the ride comfort of the Korean high speed line was compared with that of European high speed lines. It is shown that the ride comfort of Korean high speed line is better than that of European high speed lines, which indicates that the Korean track geometry and track irregularities are properly maintained.

Hanging sleepers, which are not fully supported between the sleepers and the ballast, could cause large dynamic forces especially on high speed ballasted track. The dynamic forces resulting from insufficient supporting forces may badly affect the running stability and safety of train. These also accelerate track irregularities and deteriorate track components rapidly. Consequently, the hanging sleepers will lead to sharp increases in track maintenance cost. This paper introduces a rapid and easy method to detect hanging sleepers with portable light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) and summarizes the results of experiments performed at the high speed ballasted track.

When vehicle travelling along the track which has irregularity such as vortical profile, dynamic forces arise at the Wheel/Rail contact patch by wheel/rail interaction. In particular short wavelength irregularities on dipped joint and small stiffness of connecting rail bring about intense wheel/rail dynamic effects at higher speed. In the paper, a new model for dipped joint rail is developed to study dynamic behavior of track. (omitted)
The gravel ballast in the ballasted track has the function to not only transfer/scatter the train loads to subgrade through rail and sleeper but also elastically support the train loads. Because track irregularities results inevitably from the repetitive train loads, the track maintenance should be undertaken for correcting them. By analyzing the track maintenance history in the Gyeongbu high speed railway, this study tries to choose the local two spots in the railway in which the repair frequencies are maximum and relative small; to analyze their dynamic characteristics as well as grade; and to compare them with maintenance history. As the dynamic characteristics of track, the vertical displacement and vibrating acceleration of sleeper as well as acceleration of ballast are measured/analyzed. Furthermore, by collecting soil and gravel on the reinforced roadbed and undertaking ballast screening test, the size distributions are compared with grade distribution standards of high speed railway.

In particular short wavelength irregularities on dipped joint and small stiffness of connecting rail bring about intense wheel/rail dynamic effects at higher speed. In the paper, a new model for dipped joint rail is developed to study dynamic behavior of track. A cusp behavior on dipped joint was defined by its amplitude and decay factor, which was presented by FRA track classes. The result of case study are presented, which show wheel rail contact force in each track classes, train operation speed and bending flexible rigidity ratio of fishplates which are connecting the rail.

As a new type of vibration reduction, the ladder track system has been successfully used in engineering. In this paper, a numerical model of the train-track-viaduct system is established to study the dynamic responses of an elevated bridge with ladder track. The system is composed of a vehicle submodel, a track submodel and a bridge submodel, with the measured track irregularities as the system self-excitation. The whole time histories of a train running through an elevated bridge with $3{\times}27m$ continuous PC box girders are simulated. The dynamic responses of the bridge such as deflections, lateral and vertical accelerations, and the vehicle responses such as derailment factors, offload factors and car-body accelerations are calculated. The calculated results are partly validated through the comparison with the experimental data. Compared to the common slab track, adapting the ladder sleeper can effectively reduce the accelerations of the bridge girder, and also reduce the car-body accelerations and offload factors of the train vehicle.

In this study, vehicle/track interaction analysis by the Saemaul powered vehicle was carried out. The prediction equation for the bending stress of rail was estimated using the rail bending stress by the rail surface irregularities at welds. Also, the fatigue analysis using a S-N curve of welds in the conventional railway was carried out. We estimated the fatigue life of CWR by the fracture probability. By the rail grinding, the fatigue life of CWR was evaluated in consideration to reduce the rail bending stress through removing the rail surface irregularities. Therefore, it presented the fatigue life of CWR according to the rail grinding execution plan in the conventional railway.
In this study, fatigue tests on existing continuous welded rail (CWR) on a concrete track were carried out. Based on the test results, a S-N curve expressing the remaining life of the CWR at a fracture probability of 50% was obtained using weighted probit analysis suitable for small-sample fatigue data sets. As rails had different histories in terms of accumulated passing tonnage, the test data were corrected to average out the accumulated passing tonnage. The remaining service life for the CWR on the concrete track in an urban railway was estimated using the prediction equation for the bending stress of rail developed in the past to estimate rail base bending stress and taking the surface irregularities into consideration. Estimating the remaining service life of the CWR in an urban railway showed that the rail replacement period could be extended over 200MGT. In addition, comparing the concrete track to the ballast track, the fatigue life of rail was analyzed as approximately 300MGT higher than. Therefore, the rail replacement criteria needs to distinguish between the ballast track and the concrete track, and not the criteria needs to be changed as a target for the maintenance, although it is necessary to remove longitudinal rail surface irregularities at welds by grinding.
This study considered how to estimate the deterioration rate of the track quality index, which represents track geometric irregularity. Most existing studies have used a simple linear regression and regarded the slope of the regression equation as the progress rate. In this paper, we present a Bayesian approach to estimate the track irregularity progress. This Bayesian approach has many advantages, among which the biggest is that it can formally include the prior distribution of parameters which can be derived from historic data or from expert experiences; then, the rate can be expressed as a probability distribution. We investigated the possibility of applying the Bayesian method to the estimation of the deterioration rate by comparing our bayesian approach to the conventional linear regression approach.
