  • A 4-year-old Yorkshire terrier was presented with hindlimb paresis and urinary incontinence after accidental ingestion of an herbicide. Based on neurologic examinations, decreased hindlimb proprioception with flaccid paresis were revealed. Other possible causes of the clinical signs were excluded. The clinical signs gradually improved after administration of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant therapy. This case report is the first to describe the long-term outcome of hindlimb paresis and urinary incontinence induced by glyphosate surfactant herbicide (GPSH) poisoning in a dog.

  • A seven-month-old castrated male Chihuahua weighing 1.6 kg presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizure following ingestion of isoniazid. Emergency treatment with three doses of diazepam (total 1.5 mg/kg, intravenous [IV]) and phenobarbital (15 mg/kg IV) was administered. The seizure stopped after administration of propofol (constant rate infusion [CRI]; 0.2 mg/kg/min). Blood analyses showed mildly increased serum blood glucose concentration, hyperkalemia, and hyperphosphatemia. On suspicion of isoniazid toxicity, activated charcoal (1 g/kg, orally), lipid emulsion (CRI; 9 mL/hr), and pyridoxine hydrochloride (70 mg/kg IV) were added to the treatment regimen. Twelve hours after presentation, the dog showed increased serum liver enzyme activities, serum blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine concentrations indicating hepatic and renal failure. Twenty-two hours after presentation, blood analysis still revealed increased liver enzyme activities, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine concentrations with low blood glucose concentration. Twenty-six hours after presentation, the dog's vital signs deteriorated and the owner elected for the dog to be euthanized. This is the first report of the clinical course of isoniazid toxicosis in a dog in South Korea. Furthermore, to our best knowledge, this is the first report where secondary multiple organ failure was observed due to isoniazid toxicosis. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of isoniazid toxicosis in dogs. Rapid initiation of treatment after clinical recognition is warranted in such cases.

A Case Report on Treatment of A Soyangin Patient With Yin-Deficiency-Midday-Fever(陰虛午熱) By Sukjiwhanggosamtang After Toxicosis of Aconitine (소양인(少陽人) 음허오열증(陰虛午熱證)(하소증(下消證)) 환자의 부자중독증(附子中毒症)을 숙지황고삼탕(熟地黃苦蔘湯)으로 완화시킨 치험 1례)

  • Aconitine has much Heat and Toxicity in its property, so many consideration is needed during its use. And there are many contraindications of its use. In the book of Dongyisusebowon, it has to be used when Soeumin has extreme Cold accompanied by Heat of deficiency type. In this case report, a 84 year-old male patient who had taken drugs containing Aconitine had severe Yin-Deficiency-Midday-Fever(陰虛午熱). And he had been treated with Sukjiwhanggosamtang(熟地黃苦參湯) and Dokwhaljiwhangtang(獨活地黃湯). Four conclusions can be made through this case. 1. Soyangin(少陽人) patients may have many side effects or adverse effects when they take drugs containing Aconitine even at a little volume. 2. Soyangin may have chest discomfort when they are constipated. This patient also complained chest discomfort after stroke and toxicosis of Aconitine. 3. Between Sukjiwhanggosamtang(熟地黃苦參湯) and Dokwhaljiwhangtang(獨活地黃湯), Sukjiwhanghosamtang is more effective for this patient who has been skin psoriasis and lower diabetes(下消) for a long time. 4. Although Sukjiwhanghosamtang does not include any antidote drug of Aconitine, it may be used only when defferenciation of symdrome is proper on Sasang Constituional Medicine.

  • The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe cases of feline intermediateto high-grade alimentary lymphoma regarding signalment, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, response to therapy (modified 25-week University of Wisconsin-Madison [UW-25] vs. COP [cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisone]), toxicosis, and outcomes and to identify prognostic factors. Sixteen cats were treated with chemotherapy protocols. Response rates and survival did not differ statistically between the two protocols. The progression-free interval (PFI) and median survival time (MST) in cats achieving a response to therapy were longer than in those with no response [NR] (complete remission [CR] vs. partial remission [PR] vs. NR; PFI, 124 vs. 49 vs. 12 days, p < 0.001; MST, 361 vs. 118 vs. 16 days, p < 0.001). Clinical stage was another prognostic factor for PFI and MST. The PFI and MST in cats in stage I were longer than in those in other stages (PFI, 107 days vs. 30 days; MST, 193 days vs. 54 days). Hematologic and gastrointestinal toxicosis was mostly low grade. In comparing the modified UW-25 protocol with the COP protocol, there was not much difference in the number of neutropenic episodes and grade levels.

  • This study was performed to survey prevalence of Copper metabolism domain containing 1 (COMMD1) mutation using molecular diagnostic method in a population of Bedlington terriers in Korea. COMMD1 gene (formerly MURR1) functions as a regulator of sodium transport and copper metabolism. The deletion of exon 2 of the COMMD1 gene causes copper toxicosis in Bedlington terriers. Bedlington terriers with this autosomal recessive disorder were shown to have the elevated liver copper levels due to genetic derangement in the biliary copper excretion pathway. DNA samples were extracted from whole blood collected from 257 Bedlington terriers (109 males, 148 females) of pet dog clubs in Korea. A multiplex PCR was carried out to detect of exon 2 deletion of COMMD1 gene. In this study, it was possible to know the existence and prevalence of exon 2 deletion of COMMD1 in Bedlington terriers in Korea. Of the 257 samples, 131 (51%) were wild type homozygous for the normal COMMD1 gene, 108 (42%) were heterozygous, having both normal and mutated copy of the COMMD1 gene. The eighteen (7%) were mutant type homozygous. The results of genetic analysis could help establish proper management strategy and selective breeding program to prevent COMMD1 mutation in Bedlington terriers in Korea.

  • FBs, secondary metabolites of several species of Fusaria, especially Fusarium moniliforme and F proliferatum, are commonly contaminated in com and other food grains throughout the world. Only recently identified, these mycotoxins have been associated field outbreaks of ELEM in horses and PPE in pigs. Currently, naturally or experimentally induced FB toxicosis has been studied in poultry, ruminants and rabbits. Poultry fed FB showed decreased growth rate, performance, and immune competence, as well as embryopathic, and embryocidal effects, and ricktes. Ruminants seem to be relatively less susceptible to FBs than other doestic animal. FB toxicosis reveals that liver is a target organ in all species, although other organs are affected in a species specific manner. Recently, the main target organs for $FB_1$ toxicity in rabbits was shown to be the kidney. Even low concentrations of FBs are likely to be a problem for animal health. A current study being conducted showed that feed containing low level of $FB_1$ reduces the ability of pulmonary intravascular macrophages in pig to clear blood-borne particles which would increase the susceptibility of animals to bacterial disease. The mechanism of FB toxicity remains unknown, but may be related to altered sphingolipid biosynthesis by inhibiting sphinganine N-acyltransferase. Elevations of serum and tissue SA:SO ratio have been observed in horse, pig, chicken, turkey, and rabbit, which could could serve as in effective biomarker for consumption of FB-containing feeds. There is limited information detailing dose-effect relationships either from field cases or in the laboratory. More research on the factors, including the prevalence and tolerance levels of FBs in feedstuffs that cause domestic animal disease associated with FBs, is urgently needed.

  • To investigate the effects of T-2 toxin on the blastogenesis of lymphocytes, pathology, hemogram and blood chemistry in the goat, the korean native goats were treated orally with T-2 toxin for 21 days with a dosage of 0.6mg per kg body weight. The results were as follows: 1. The total count of leukocytes and lymphocytes decreased significantly from 14 to 21 days after treatment. 2. Mryeloid: erythroid ratios increased significantly on days 12 after treatment. 3. Delayed-type hypersensitivity skin reactions to tuberculin were reduced predominantly. 4. T-2 toxin induced prolonged prothrombin time. 5. Mitogenic responses of lymphocytes to both lipopolysaccharide and phytohemagglutinin were significantly depressed on days 7 and 14 after treatment. 6. Treatment of T-2 toxin caused marked depletion of lymphocytes in the thymus, mesenteric lymph node, peyer's patchs and spleen.

  • Guinea pigs were administrated with T-2 toxin at a rate of 1 and 0.6mg/kg body weight per day for 21 days to study the immunological and pathological effects of T-2 toxin in guinea pigs. Blood was collected before T-2 treatment and on days 7, 14 and 21 of the trial for hematological and biological examinations and for the mitogen assay using lymphocytes. Myeloid: erythroid ratios were examined from the fernur bone marrow samples taken a day before T-2 toxin treatment began, on day 12 and at death. Guinea pigs received with 1mg/kg body weight of T-2 toxin daily showed leukopenic, lymphopenic and anemic signs on day 7 and 14. The mitogenic responses to the T-cell mitogen, Concanavalin A and B-cell mitogens, lipopolysaccharide were significantly depressed on day 7. Histologically, marked cellular damages including karyorrhexis and depletion of lymphocytes were observed in the actively dividing cells of the gastrointestinal tract, lymph node, spleen and bone marrow of guinea pigs.
