  • Both the control and heated specimen of oak, hornbean, alder, poplar, red pine and pitch pine among domestic commercial species and taun imported were used for radial and tangential shrinkage and movement that occurred on changing the relative humidity of the atmosphere from 90 percent to 60 percent at $25^{\circ}C$. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The radial and tangential shrinkage of the control and heated hornbean and oak wood, except alder, of high specific gravity showed greater than species with low specific gravity. The ratio of tangential to radial shrinkage was 1.46 for taun to 2.70 for alder. Green volume specific gravity of the heated and soaked specimen of all species except poplar decreased 1.5 to 3.1 percent. Shrinkage of the heated specimen increased more than that of the control specimen, and antishrink efficiency of all timbers except alder had negative value. Shrinkage from green to air dry of treated specimens increased more than case of total shrinkage, and radial shrinkage of those specimen increased greater than tangential shrinkage. 3. The movement of the heating specimen for 120 hours decreased than those of the control and the heating specimen for 240 hours. The movement of heating oak, poplar, red pine and pitch pine (or 240 hours increased rather than those of the control specimen.

  • The possibilities of the estimation of the moisture content(MC) for sitka-spruce (Picea sitchensis Carr.) by measuring density have been investigated. The method is based on the relationships between the wood density and moisture content of wood expressed by Equations (8)~(9). The purpose of this study is examining the estimation of the moisture content of wood by density and the variation of moisture content with annual ring width of wood. The following conclusions were obtained; 1. This method is very convenience because of the average moisture content of wood can be obtained by a simple estimation. This estimation can be made from the easy measurement of the weight and volume of wood. 2. Coefficient of determination between the experimental MCs and theoretical MCs which is calculated by the oven-dry densities of each specimens and Equations (8), (9) is 0.98. This Correlation is very remarkable. Therefore the model Equations on the estimation of moisture content by wood density was available. 3. Relationship between experimental MCs and theoretical MCs which is estimated by average oven-dry density of total specimens showed positive correlation(Fig.2). But from the Fig.4. we can concluded that the number of specimens is two groups. This phenomenon is considered that the variation of MC by the annual ring width from the specimens' observations. Consequently, the MCs of wood by density, is likely to be successful method. can be estimate using by the average oven-dry densities divided with the annual ring widths of wood.

  • Among the energy consumption in building, the heating energy takes the largest part. Therefore, it is important to minimize the heat energy loss in building for the reduction of overall energy use in construction. The most important points for the minimization of energy loss in building are insulation and airtightness. Especially, in wood houses, airtightness is very important for energy saving as well as increase of durability. However, the researches on airtightness of wood buildings have been started recently and are very deficient especially in Korea. In this study, air leakage properties and airtightness performance were evaluated for light-frame wood houses built in Daejeon and Chungnam area. Total 7 houses were evaluated, among which four houses (Case 1 to Case 4) were in the construction stage before interior finish and the other three houses (Case 5 to Case 7) were after completion of construction work. The tests for airtightness were conducted by pressurization-depressurization method, and the factors included in the measurements includes air leakage rate at 50 Pa (CMH50), air change rate at 50 Pa (ACH50), equivalent leakage area (EqLA) and EqLA per floor area. As a result of this study, key air leakage points in wood houses were found to be the gaps between floor and wall, the holes for wiring and plumbing, the double glasses windows and the entrance doors. The average value of ACH50 for the houses after completion of construction work was $3.5h^{-1}$ that was similar to Europe standard ($3.0h^{-1}$). ACH50 was proportional to EqLA per floor area but inversely proportional to the internal volume, the net floor area and the area of window.

  • Energy consumption statistics in 2005 from the Korea Energy Management Corporation show that building energy usage was about 24.2% of total domestic energy consumption, and 64% of total building energy usage was consumed by residential buildings. Thus, about 10% of total domestic energy consumption is due to the heating of residential buildings. Building energy can be calculated by the configuration of the building envelope and the rate of infiltration (the volume of the infiltration of outdoor air and the leakage of indoor air), and by doing so, the annual energy usage for heating and cooling. Therefore, air-tightness is an important factor in building energy conservation. This investigate air infiltration and various factors that decrease it in timber frame buildings and suggest ways to improve air-tightness for several structural types. Timber frame buildings can be classified into light frame, post and beam, and log house. Post and beam includes Han-ok (a Korean traditional building). Six light frame buildings, three post and beam buildings, one Korean traditional Han-ok and a log house were selected as specimens. Blower door tests were performed following ASTM E779-03. The light frame buildings showed the highest air-tightness, followed by post and beam structures, and last, log houses.

  • This study has been made to make an observation regarding present status of the coal mine props which is desperately needed for coal production, despite of great shortage of the timber resources in this country, and investigate the effects of diffusion process on the decay resistances of the mine props as applied preservatives of Malenit and chromated zinc chloride. The results are as follows. 1. Present status of the coal mine props Total demand of coal mine props in the year of 1975 was approximately 456 thousand cubic meters. The main species used for mine props are conifer (mainly Pinus densiflora) and hardwood (mainly Quercus). Portions between them are half and half. With non fixed specification, wide varieties of timber in size and form are used. And volume of wood used per ton of coal production shows also wide range from 0.017 cubic meter to 0.03 cubic meter. 2. Decay resistance test a) The oven dry weight decreased between untreated specimen and treated specimen has not shown any significantly, although it has shown some differences in average values between them. It may be caused by the shorter length of the test. b) The strength of compression test between untreated specimen and treated specimen has also shown the same results as shown in case of weight decrease. Reasons assumed are the same. c) The amounts of the extractives in one percent of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) between untreated and treated specimen have shown the large value in case of untreated specimen than that of treated. 3. The economical benifit between untreated and treated wood when applied in field has seen better in long tenn base in case of treated wood, although the primary cost of treated wood add a little bit more cost than that of the untreated wood.

  • Many methods and techniques have been developed to obtain the accurate design parameters in soft soils. In particular, several researchers suggest the techniques to get the void ratio for understanding the soil behavior. The objective of this paper verifies the accuracy of the proposed analytical solution for determining the void ratio based on the elastic wave velocities. The paper covers the theories of Wood, Biot, Gassmann and Foti proposed chronological order. The total theory represents the wave propagation in fully saturated medium. To verify the proposed analytical solution, the laboratory and field tests are carried out. After measuring the elastic wave, the void ratios are assessed using proposed equation. The volume based void ratios are also obtained for comparing with the estimated value by several equations. The values estimated by volume, Gassmann and Biot are show good similarity. However, the void ratios based on Wood and Foti methods have a slightly different trend. This study suggests that the theories of Biot and Gassmann may be a useful equation for assessing the void ratio using elastic wave velocities in the field.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical properties and changes in moisture concentrations of bedding materials under the conditions of rearing Korean Hanwoo cows. Methods: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the physicochemical characteristics (Exp. I) and usefulness as beddings for rearing cattle (Exp. II) by the type of beddings such as sawdust (SD), wood shavings (WS) and sawdust+wood shavings (S+W; 1:1 in volume), and the species of pine trees from different countries of origins (China, Pinus armandii, AR; Vietnam, Pinus kesiya, KE; USA, Pinus rigida, RI). Results: In Exp. I, SD-AR showed the largest proportion (78.3%) of fine particles (250 ㎛+below 250 ㎛) and the highest bulk density (208 kg/㎥) among treatments (p<0.05). The water absorption capacity at 24 h of both S+W-RI (713%) and -KE (701%) was the highest among treatments (p<0.05) and higher than those of SD or WS alone within each species of pine tree (p<0.05). Moisture evaporation rates (%) at 12 h were ranged from 52.3 to 60.8 for SD, 69.9 to 74.4 for WS, and 72.3 to 73.5 for S+W. Total amounts (mg/㎡) of ammonia emissions were the lowest (p<0.05) in KE species among the pine species within each type of bedding material, having higher ability of ammonia absorption. In Exp II, KE species in both side A and B had lower moisture concentrations (%) than other species. Regardless of types of beddings except SD-AR, moisture concentrations of beddings within a pen were higher (p<0.01) at side A than B. Conclusion: The KE species has better physical characteristics than other beddings and more useful for rearing Hanwoo cattle than other beddings, probably caused by the differences in the method and degree of wood processing rather than the species.

  • Stand Density Diagrams (SDD) are average stand-level models which graphically illustrate the relationship between yield, density and mortality throughout the various stages of forest development. These are useful tools for designing, displaying and evaluating alternative density regimes in even-aged forest ecosystems to achieve a desired future condition. This contribution presents an example of a SDD that has been constructed for teak forests of Karnataka in southern India. The relationship between stand density, dominant height, quadratic mean diameter, relative spacing and stand volume is represented in one graph. The relative spacing index was used to characterize the population density. Two equations were fitted simultaneously to the data collected from 27 sample plots measured annually for three years: one relates quadratic mean diameter with stand density and dominant height while the other relates total stand volume with quadratic mean diameter, stand density and dominant height.
