  • This paper examines the feasibility of using periodically varying dielectric layers with dielectric constant ${\epsilon}_1$ and ${\epsilon}_2$ at millimeter wave frequency for implementing the frequency-selective reflectors that permit feed separation in large aperture reflecting antenna systems. For oblique incidence, it is found that the total reflection can be obtained at different frequencies for proper choices of ${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$ and the geometric parameters. In the frequency-selective reflector designed, the bandwidth for 90% reflection is always found to be much narrower than that for 90% transmission.

  • When participating in problem-based learning (PBL), it is important for medical students to generate claims and provide justifications for their claims in small group discussions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of argumentation instruction on medical student learning experiences with PBL. A total of one hundred first-year preclinical students from Inje University College of Medicine, who had attended argumentation instruction, participated in this study. All of the participants completed a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire regarding their learning experiences with PBL, before and after the argumentation instruction. The questionnaire comprised 22 items with eight subcategories: argumentation activity, reflection, integration of basic and clinical science, identification of lack of knowledge, logical thinking, self-directed study, communication, and attitude toward discussion. The collected data were analyzed through a paired-sample t-test. The results of this study found that the argumentation instruction promoted the preclinical students' experiences with argumentation activities, reflection, an integration of basic and clinical science, the identification of their lack of knowledge, logical thinking, and self-directed study, and it increased positive attitudes toward group discussion. The findings suggest argumentation instruction can enhance medical student group discussions and help students achieve the objectives of PBL, including acquisition of basic and clinical science knowledge and development of clinical reasoning and self-directed learning abilities, which can highlight the meaningful learning experiences students have with PBL.

  • This study introduces the construct of meta-parenting or a superordinate category of effortful cognition, including anticipation, assessment, reflection and problems. Also, it aims to analyse meta-parenting in terms of demographic variables and investigate how it relates to other cognitions on parenting and parenting behaviors. One hundred seventy three mothers of preschool children were surveyed on Hawk's (2007) Meta-Parenting, Sameroff and Feil's (1985) Concepts of Development, Stipek, Danniels, Galluzzo, & Milburn's (1992) Activities Sub-scales. They also commented on their views of appropriate methods of child-rearing and the starting age of extra-curricula activity and the number of extra-curricula activities. The main results were as follows: Mothers showed the highest score on assessment followed by anticipation, reflection and problems while these four components of meta-parenting were highly correlated to each other. Among demographic variables, only the mothers' age and education were linked to some component of meta-parenting. Meta-parenting was correlated with complexity of thinking but not with views on appropriate methods of child-rearing. Also, meta-parenting was associated with formal and informal activities at home and the beginning time of providing the extra-curricula activity with the total number of extra-curricula activities provided at present.

  • Maize, in Hungary, is the fodder-plant grown in the biggest quantity. It is not only used as a fodder but other products such as iso-sugar are made from it, too. The quality of the fodder and the produce is largely dependent on the composition of the supplied maize to the processing site. The examination of quality parameters besides conventional methods are investigated and measured by NIR spectroscopy on a routine basis. The investigated parameters are the following: water, total protein, starch and oil content. The accuracy and precision of determining these parameters we, apart from the wet chemical methods, influenced by sample preparation to a great extent. One of the main features of this is the sample particle size and its distribution across the sample. The uneven distribution of particle size negatively influences the measurement accuracy, decreases model robustness and prediction ability. With these in mind the aim of our experiment was to investigate the effect of particle size on the accuracy of maize composition determination using reflection measurement setup. In addition, we tested different spectrum transformations, which are suitable for canceling this effect. In our experiment 47 samples were analyzed with three different mesh sizes (1.5mm, 1.8mm and 2mm). The results of our findings are presented here.

  • This paper presents two new storage schemes of 3-D objects to accelerate the finding of the first intersecting object and the shadow computation steps in ray tracing. The 3-D objects which are potentially intersected with the first reflection (refraction)ray are enrolled within a so called reflection (refraction) frustum' for a polygon object. Only those objects registered in the corres ponding frustum are immediately checked for intersection with the secondary rays emanating from the same polygon. The other is called a shadow pyramid' which contains the candidate objects possibly blocking the path from the relevant light source to any point on the relevant polgon. The shadow testing of a point is performed only against the objects contained in the associated shadow pyramid. Despite the cost needed for registration of objects within frusta or shadow pyramids, the total rendering time of ray tracing using the proposed approaches was reduced by approximately 50% (10% in color rendering time and 70% in shadoe testing time) from the conventional cell 50% (10% in color rendering time and 70% in shadow testing time) from the conventional cell traversal scheme under the 3-D uniform subdivision environment due to the fast finding of candidate objects for intersection and the reduced number of intersection calculations.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' written arguments embedded in scientific inquiry investigations using the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. Argument components defined in this study are questions, claims, questions-claims relationship, evidence, claims-evidence relationship, multiple modal representations, and reflection. A set of criteria for evaluating each argument component was developed to evaluate writing samples of students from college freshman general chemistry laboratory classes. Results indicate that students produced, on average, moderate to powerful questions, claims, and evidence. They also constructed reasonable questions-claims relationship and claims-evidence relationship. Compared to other component scores, the average score for reflection was relatively low. Overall, the average Total Argument score was 21.4 out of a possible 36, that is, the quality of the written arguments using the SWH approach during a series of inquiry-based chemistry laboratory investigations was moderate to powerful. The findings of this study suggest that students, on average, developed reasonable scientific arguments generated as part of scientific inquiry. In other words, students are capable of putting together reasonable arguments as they participate in inquiry-based laboratory classrooms.

  • The present study examines the effects of periodic type diffusers for producing the preferred acoustics for speech and determines the more successful configurations of sound-absorbing and diffusing treatments for achieving good acoustics in classrooms. The measurements were carried out in a 1/10 scale model classroom systematically adding diffusers to one or more of four surfaces of the room. A total of 13 combination of diffusers with absorptive treatments were investigated. Adding diffusers on the ceiling were more effective to increasing the early-arriving reflection energy($G_{50}$) than adding absorptive materials on the entire ceiling. The late arriving reflection energy($G_{late}$) was decreased with increasing amounts of diffusing treatments of upper front or rear wall and this resulted in achieving higher early-to-late ratios($G_{50}$). Adding diffusers on the upper front wall($AC_{100}DUFW_{26}$) achieved more uniform acoustical conditions over the receiver positions than adding diffusers on the upper rear wall($AC_{100}DUFW_{26}$). Adding diffusers on the ceiling and absorptive materials on the lower front wall($AC_{75}DC_{25}ALFW_{26}$) achieved better acoustical conditions than adding the absorptive materials on the entire ceiling and lower front wall($AC_{100}ALFW_{26}$).

  • The typical method for performing an absolute radiometric calibration of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) System is to analyze its response, without interference, to a target with a known Radar Cross Section (RCS). To minimize interference, an error-free calibration site for a Corner Reflector (CR) is required on a wide and flat plain or on an area without disturbance sources (such as ground objects). However, in reality, due to expense and lack of availability for long periods, it is difficult to identify such a site. An alternative solution is the use of a Triangular Trihedral Corner Reflector (TTCR) site, with a surrounding protection wall consisting of berms and a hollow. It is possible in this scenario, to create the minimum criteria for an effectively error-free site involving a conventional object-tip reflection applied to all beams. Sidelobe interference by the berm is considered to be the major disturbance factor. Total interference, including an object-tip reflection and a sidelobe interference, is analyzed experimentally with SAR images. The results provide a new guideline for the minimum criteria of TTCR site design that require, at least, the removal of all ground objects within the fifth sidelobe.

  • This research is the case study of collaborative mentoring in the professional development of multi-tiered mathematics teacher community. We observed the procedures of mentoring, and contents of mentoring in PD program. For this purpose, we implemented PD program with participant unit composed of 3 or 4 teachers in the same school and total 25 teachers from 4 elementary schools and 4 high schools. Also there were 1 mentor and 1 sub-mentor to support each school. Observed mentoring processes were all recorded and the participants not only were interviewed several times but also wrote reflection notes after meetings. While mentoring PD program was implemented, mentor and mentee had joint responsibility about lessons implemented by mentee. Furthermore It showed possibility of change of teacher learning culture, learning culture of community. It means that teacher would improve their professionalism more effectively within teacher community instead of individual. 4 reflection contents was founded in collaborative mentring; 1)purpose of mathematics education, 2)motivation and connection between previous lecture and present lecture 3)lack of mathematical contents in lesson 4)discourse between teacher and students.
