The porosity of polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was investigated using a nitrogen porosimeter, and the dyeability of the treated fibers was discussed in terms of the porosity. In pore distribution, the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution were characterized by higher amount of pores below $10\AA$ than those of the untreated fibers, and by shift of the pore size having maximum accumulated volume from $10\AA$ for the untreated fibers to $5~6\AA$. As the weight loss of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased, BET surface area and total pore volume increased linearly, but average pore size, showing some different aspect, increased steeply at earlier stage and then approached the maximum value. The dye uptakes of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased with the BET surface area, the total pore volume and the average pore size. The alkali treatment increased the surface area of polyester fibers, so that the chance of contact between the fiber and dye molecules increased. In addition, the pores created on the surface of polyester fibers by alkali treatment might act as pathways for dye molecules into the polyester fibers.
The fatigue test of the fillet weldments was executed with different beveling angles and porosities. The beveling angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ were compared with fatigue lives. After the fillet weldment failure, the porosities which found at the fractured surface were observed to account the effect on fatigue life. Finite element analysis was performed to correlate the fatigue strength and the sizes and the locations of porosities. The stress-strain field was severely affected by the length of notch and the sizes and locations of porosities. Based on the quantitative analysis of porosity effect, the total volume of porosities was a key factor for fatigue strength of the fillet weldment.
A study is presented of the adsorption capacity of a number of different activated carbons for hydrogen at 100 bar aad 298 K. The hydrogen adsorption isotherm was measured by isothermal gravimetric analysis, using a microbalance. The effect of activated carbon's porosity on hydrogen adsorption capacity is surveyed. It is concluded that hydrogen adsorption capacity of activated carbon is lineally increased according to the increase of specific surface area and total pore volume, It seems that microporosity is more contributive than mesoporosity. Most of the adsorbed quantity is due to physical adsorption and chemisorption is negligible, In this work, 0.79 wt.% of hydrogen adsorption capacity is reached.
When a shock wave discharges from an open end of a duct, an impulse wave is generated outside the duct, causing serious noise and vibration problems. The magnitude of the impulse wave can be reduced by installing of a perforated duct. In the current study, the characteristics of the impulse wave discharged from the exit of a perforated duct are numerically investigated. A TVD (total variation diminishing) scheme is used to solve the unsteady, axisymmetric, compressible Euler equations. In computations, the porosity of a perforated pipe $(\sigma)$ and the Mach number of incident shock wave $(M_s)$ are varied in the range of $\sigma=0\~19\%\;and\;M_s=1.01\~1.50$, respectively. The results show that the directivity and magnitude of impulse wave strongly depend upon the Mach number of incident shock wave and the porosity of the perforated pipe. The present CFD results are in close agreement with experimental results.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of total polymer concentration on the chemical structure, morphology of pores, porosity, swelling ratio, degradation of gelatin-poly (vinyl alcohol) (Gel-PVA) cryogel scaffolds. Porous cryogels were prepared with cryogelation technique by using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. Functional group composition of cryogels after crosslinking was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The morphology of cryogels was characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and porosity analysis. All of the cryogels had a porous structure with an average pore size between $45.58{\pm}14.28$ and $50.14{\pm}4.26{\mu}m$. The cryogels were biodegradable and started to degrade in 14 days. As the polymer concentration increased the swelling ratio, the porosity and the degradation rate decreased. Spongy and mechanically stable Gel-PVA cryogels, with tunable properties, can be potential candidates as scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.
Differences in the filling amount of substrates in container can influence severely on the soil physical properties and crop growth. This research was conducted to secure the fundamental informations related to the changes in soil physical properties as influenced by the filling amount of coir dust-based substrates in container. For the experiment, three substrates were formulated by blending coir dust (CD) with expanded rice hull (CD+ERH, 8:2, v/v), carbonized rice hull (CD+CRH, 6:4, v/v) or ground and aged pine bark (CD+GAPB, 8:2, v/v). Based on the optimum bulk density, the amount of substrates filled in 347.5mL aluminum cylinder were adjusted to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130%. Then the changes in total porosity (TP), container capacity (CC), and air-filled porosity (AFP) by various filling amounts were measured. The TP decreased linearly in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB and quadratically in CD+CRH as the filling amounts of the media increased from 90% to 130%. The CC in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media increased as the filling amount increased from 90% to 120%, then decreased in 130%, showing quadratic change. The CC in CD+CRH was the highest in 90% filling amount and decreased gradually as the filling amount of root medea increased. The AFPs in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media were 38 and 37%, respectively in 90% filling amount and they decreased drastically until 110% filling, then gradually in 120 and 130% filling amount showing the quadratic changes. The AFP of CD+CRH at 90% filling amount was 22% and it decreased as the filling amount increased until 130%, showing linear change. These results indicate that the increase in filling amount of substrates influenced more severely the AFP than CC, and careful consideration on container filling is required to provide a better root condition thus maximize crop growth.
The porosity (including the specific surface area and pore volume-diameter distribution) of montmorillonitic soft rock (MSR) was studied experimentally with an electrochemical treatment, based on which the change in porosity was further analyzed from the perspective of its electrokinetic potential (${\zeta}$ potential) and the isoelectric point of the electric double layer on the surface of the soft rock particles. The variation between the ${\zeta}$ potential and porosity was summarized, and used to demonstrate that the properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration of MSR can be modified by electrochemical treatment. The following conclusions were drawn. The specific surface area and total pore volume decreased, whereas the average pore diameter increased after electrochemical modification. The reduction in the specific surface area indicates a reduction in the dispersibility and swelling-shrinking of the clay minerals. After modification, the ${\zeta}$ potential of the soft rock was positive in the anodic zone, there was no isoelectric point, and the rock had lost its properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration. The ${\zeta}$ potential increased in the intermediate and cathodic zones, the isoelectric point was reduced or unchanged, and the rock properties are reduced. When the ${\zeta}$ potential is increased, the specific surface area and the total pore volume were reduced according to the negative exponent law, and the average pore diameter increased according to the exponent law.
The effects of tipping paper permeability and plugwrap porosity on the ventilation and the pressure drop of cigarettes have been studied and the results obtained were as follows. 1. The single and the multiple regression equation to estimate tip ventilation were establised. In the equations, the observed values of the tip ventilation with the varieties the plugwrap porosity were content with them by the single regression equation. 2. As based on the statistical consideration of the above equation, the deviation of the observed tip ventilation versus the tipping paper permeability were higher than them to the plugwrap porosity. 3. The regression equations to calculate pressure drop ratio and the total ventilation rate in filter tip from the tea ventilation were obtained. According to the equation, the observed values of the pressure drop ratio were significantly similar to them calculated. 4. It was found that the equations could be applied to the calculation of the ventilation of cigarettes using the mechanical and micro laser perforation tipping paper as well as the electrically perforated tipping paper of this Study.
The study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil physico-chemical properties between soils of preplanting fields and 2 years old ginseng fields, and compare the missing plant rate among the 2 years 016 ginseng fields. 1, The missing plant rate of 2 years old ginseng was high in sand loam while low in clay loam soil texture, soil porosity and NO3-N were remarkably increased in 2 years old ginseng field than preplanting soil, as the clay content was increased, soil porosity seemed to be increased but exchangeable nitrogen decreased. 2. The preplanting soil management methods did not significantly influenced on the missing plant rate and soil porosity in 2 years old ginseng fields, However NO3-N content and Fusarium density seemed to be decreased as the plow frequency was increased, exchangeable nitrogen content, whereas, seemed to be increased with more organic matter. 3. Differences of clay content (below 15% and above 20% of clay content) was significantly influenced on soil porosity, bulk density, total nitrogen, organic matter and P2O5 content. 4, Missing rate showed negative correlation with clay, soil moisture, and organic matter content but positive corelation with NO3-N in 2 years old ginseng fields.
