To fulfill the increasing demand for a high quality of flower, we investigated the effects of nitrogen application on plant growth, yield and bioactive compounds of Chrysanthemum indicum L.. C. indicum L. was cultivated in a pot scale, and nitrogen applied with the level of 0 (N0), 50 (N50), 100 (N100), 150 (N150), 200 (N200) and $300\;(N300)\;kg\;ha^{-1}$ to suggest optimum rate of nitrogen fertilization. Phosphate and potassium applied the same amount of $80-80\;kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($P_2O_5-K_2O$) in all treatments. Growth characteristics and yields of C. indicum L. were significantly affected by nitrogen application. Maximum yield achieved in 265 and $295\;kg\;ha^{-1}$ N treatment on the whole plant and the flower parts, respectively. The nitrogen content and uptake of whole plant significantly increased by the increase of nitrogen application. Five major components of essential oil, $\alpha$-pinene, 1,8-cineol, chrysanthenone, germacrene-D, and $\alpha$-curcumene in flowerheads of C. indicum L. occupied approximately 40% of peak area, germacrene-D decreased by the increase of nitrogen application among them. However, cumambrin A contents in the flower parts of C. indicum L. were affected negatively by the increase of nitrogen application, but total yields of cumambrin A in flower part significantly increased. Conclusively, nitrogen fertilization could increase the yield of flowerheads. The optimum application level of nitrogen fertilizer might be on the range of $265-295\;kg\;ha^{-1}$ in a mountainous soil.
In this year, Koreans have a shortage in agricultural and drinking water due to severe algal blooms generated in major lakes. Waste oyster shells were obtained from temporary storage near the workplace at which oysters were separated from their shells. Heating ($1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air) was employed to convert raw oyster shell powders into calcium oxide powders that reacted efficiently with phosphorus and nitrogen to remove algal blooms from eutrophicated wastewater. As the dispersed amount of heated oyster shell powders was increased, water clarity and visual light penetration were improved. Coagulation, precipitation and carbonation process of the heated oyster shell powders in a water purifier facilitated removal of eutrophication nutrient such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which is both beneficial and economically viable. $CO_2$ implantation by carbonation treatment not only produced thermodynamically stable CaO in oyster shells to derive precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) but also accelerated algal removal by activation of coagulation and precipitation process. The use of oyster shell powders led to a mean reduction of 97% in total phosphate (T-P), a mean reduction of 91% in total nitrogen (T-N) and a maximum reduction of 51% in chemical oxygen demand (COD), compared with the total pollutant load of raw algal solution. Remarkable water quality improvement of algal removal by heated oyster shell powders and PCC carbonation treatment will allow utilization as water resources to agricultural or industrial use.
Seasonal and spatial distribution of vascular plants were examined and related to soil texture, pH, moisture and nutrient contents in the riparian zone of the Balan Stream. In spring the area was dominated by Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis, was displaced by Persicaria thunbergii and Humulus japonicus in summer. From the stream channel to bank, soil texture and pH were not significantly differentiated, moisture decreased, organic matter and K increased, and TKN and available P increased in June and decreased in August. DCA ordination analysis by species distribution showed spatially and seasonally distinct patterns seasonal difference was evident on axis 1, and spatial difference according to the distance from stream channel was clear, too. Both axis 1 and axis 2 scores were significantly correlated with biomass, pH, and phosphate. Species richness increased were significantly correlated with biomass, pH, and phosphate. Species richness increaed with increasing organic matter and phosphate, and decreased with increasing soil moisture and K. Biomass increased with increasing organic matter, but was negatively related to pH, moisture, TKN, available P and K. Available P was significantly correlated with biomass, pH, and total soil nitrogen. In conclusion, the distribution of riparian vegetation was governed by soil physico-chemical properties, which are primarily determined by how far it is from the stream channel.
Various methods are used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals or petroleum. In recent years, harsh physical and chemical remediation methods are being used to increase remediation efficiency, however, such processes could affect soil properties and degrade the ecological functions of the soil. Effects of soil washing, thermal desorption, and land farming, which are the most frequently used remediation methods, on the physicochemical properties of remediated soil were investigated in this study. For soils smaller than 2 mm, the soil texture were changed from sandy clay loam to sandy loam because of the decrease in the clay content after soil washing, and from loamy sand to sandy loam because of the decrease in the sand content and increase in silt content during thermal desorption, however, the soil texture remained unchanged after land farming process. The water-holding capacity, organic matter content, and total nitrogen concentration of the tested soil decreased after soil washing. A change in soil color and an increase in the available phosphate concentration were observed after thermal desorption. Exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, and available phosphate concentration were found to decrease after land farming; these components were probably used by microorganisms during as well as after the land farming process because microbial processes remain active even after land farming. A study of these changes can provide information useful for the reuse of remediated soil. However, it is insufficient to assess only soil physicochemical properties from the viewpoint of the reuse of remediated soil. Potential risks and ecological functions of remediated soil should also be considered to realize sustainable soil use.
Tidal variations of various chemical constituents in the laver bed sea waters in Wan Do Gun were determined over one spring tidal cycle from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969. Total ranges and means of the contents at Pyung-il Do and Wan Do are as follows. Although the average monthly variations of each content at Pyung-il Do were similar to those at Wan Do, most of the contents at Pyung-il Do were at a slightly higher level than at Wan Do. The values of silicate-silicon, phosphate- phosphorus and soluble iron, however, showed high levels at Wan Do. Chlorinity, magnesium, calcium, dissolved oxygen, silicate-silicon and phosphate-phosphorus contents increased from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969, though the content of soluble iron decreased before December and slightly increased in January and February. The average monthly variations of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrate-nitrogen contents were irregular. The nitrite-nitrogen content appeared in trace amounts in the months with a comparatively high water temperature, i.e., October and November, but in midwinter it was undetected. The ranges of the tidal variations of the contents of each chemical constituent were not significantly wide, though the contents varied excessively by the hour, and this may show the irregularity of the water quality in Wan Do Gun coastal area. As a rule, no regular tidal variation of the chlorinity was observed except slightly decreased value at ebb tide at Wan Do. In general, although the pattern of the variations of calcium and magnesium contents were similar to that of the chlorinity, no definite relationships between these constituents and chlorinity were observed. Tidal variations of the dissolved oxygen content, nutrient salts and soluble iron were irregular.
The effect of phosphate on the production of avermectin B1a was studied. Response surface methodology was applied to optimize the concentration of organic nitrogen sources. The portion of B1b in total avermectins was decreased from 5.8% to 3.0% by the addition of 1.5 g/ι inorganic phosphate to the production medium. Among organic nitrogen sources, soybean meal was the most effective on avermectin biosynthesis. Results showed that B1a productivity was increased by 44.8% in a laboratory scale fermenter cultivation of Streptomyces avermitilis YA99-40 through fed-batch process. A maximal B1a productivity was obtained by repeated 30 and 20 g/ι of glucose feeding at 136 and 206 hour, respectively. The B1a productivity was increased by 86.3% and the proportion of B1a in the total avermectins was improved from 38% to 45% with respect to the control process. These results would be very useful for enhancing productivity of B1a in an up-scaled processes.
Studies related to water quality in catfish ponds were conducted on commercial catfish production ponds and compared with its receiving streams' water quality in central and west-central Alabama. The ponds were stocked with 10,000 fish/ha. The ponds were aerated nightly (0000-0600 hrs). Fish were fed to satiation at about the same time, six-days a week. In order to assess the pollutional strength of effluents from commercial channel catfish ponds, water samples were collected during each calender season from fall 1990 through summer 1991, and selected water quality variables were monitored. Mean values for water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, settleable solids, total suspended soilds, volatile solids, total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphate, biochemical oxygen demand, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen were basically the same (P> 0.05) between samples taken from the surface and near the bottom. Concentrations of most water quality variables of catfish ponds were higher than those of receiving streams, and especially it had much higher average concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus than streams.

The generation of livestock wastewater in Korea amounts to $130,000m^3/day$, 0.43% of the total waste water volume, but which corresponds to 8.6% of total BOD loading. Furthermore this wastewater contains a large amount of nitrogen and phosphorus that are major causes of eutrophication in rivers and lakes. The average volume of livestock wastewater in a Korea's single farm is only $2.5m^3/day$, which necessitates development of a simple and economical process for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Introduction of filtration method removes more than 90% of suspended solids. Subsequent application of reverse osmosis removes more then 95% of total nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastewater. The effluent of this treatment will yield less than 200 mg/L of total nitrogen and 1 mg/L of total phosphorous, which are lower than 260 mg/L of total N and 50 mg/L of total P, the regulation values of Ministry of Environment, Korea. Treating $2m^3/day$ of livestock wastewater was found to be feasible with the application of filtration and reverse osmosis and the electricity requirement was estimated to be about 30 Kwh/month.
The relationship between pb, zn, cd, and the microbial biomass and activity were investigated in three public park soils of central and outer london. Variability with distance from the roadside and profile were studied. The heavey metal concentrations were the highest in hampstead heath and hyde park with high trafic density and the lowest in hainault. The highest concentrations of heavy metals were found adjacent to the roadside in the upper parts of the soil profile. Dehydrogenase activity, adenosine tri-phosphate and ergosterol contents used as indices of micrbial biomass and activity, were generally higher in hainadult, and also higher in the upper pats of the soil profile. Simple regression analysis indicated that the microbial biomass and activity were affected significantly by moisture content, water holding capacity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and organic mater rather than heavy metal concentration. Highest inputs of nitrogen and carbon were associated with high inputs of heavey metals, all three being derived from vehicle emissions adjacent to the road. The hyde park and hampstead heath microbial populations were able to respond to the c and n input positively by increase in biomass and activity, whereas the hainault populations could not. This rsult suggrsts adaptation in he former to heavy matals, but not in the latter.
Floral study and present vegetation survey were conducted at a representative reclaimed wetland located behind the Rural Research Institute at Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. The importance values were calculated from the ground cover and frequency of recorded species within quadrats and detrended canonical correspondence analysis was conducted using environment variables, such as total nitrogen, electric conductivity, available phosphate, nitrate nitrogen and the distance from the inner roads. And basal areas for the trees encroaching on the reclaimed wetland were estimated to take a look at the on-going situation about the succession routes on land. As a result, 46 families and 158 species of plants were recorded and Pragmites communis was found to be a dominant species as the present vegetation. The ordination analysis results showed that species distribution was purposely explained by total nitrogen in soil and its content in nitrate nitrogen. The invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus rigida whose basal areas were $22.3m^2$ and $1.6m^2$ respectively, into the interior areas of the reclaimed wetland was found to cause a disturbance making some parts of the wetland into land. The zoning program using water level control and migratory roads is becoming a contributing factor in destroying a wetland, so it's suggested that some adjustments should be needed to take care of it.
