This paper presents theoretical and finite element analysis results for the lateral-torsional buckling of I-girders with corrugated web under uniform bending. Lateral-torsional buckling is a major design aspect for flexural members composed of thin-walled I-section. However, torsional rigidities such as the warping constants of the I-girders with corrugated web are not fully understood yet. In this paper, bending and pure torsional rigidities of I-girders with corrugated web are first described using the results of previous researchers. Then, the location of the shear center and the warping constants are derived. Using the derived section properties of I-girders with corrugated web, the lateral-torsional buckling strength is determined. Finite element analyses are conducted and the proposed lateral-torsional buckling strength of I-girders with corrugated web is successfully verified. Finally, the effects of corrugation profiles of the web on the lateral-torsional buckling load of I-girders with corrugated web are discussed.
In the current work, static and free torsional vibration of functionally graded (FG) nanorods are investigated using Fourier sine series. The boundary conditions are described by the two elastic torsional springs at the ends. The distribution of functionally graded material is considered using a power-law rule. The systems of equations of the mechanical response of nanorods subjected to deformable boundary conditions are achieved by using the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and taking the effects of torsional springs into account. The idea of the study is to construct an eigen value problem involving the torsional spring parameters with small scale parameter and functionally graded index. This article investigates the size dependent free torsional vibration based on the MCST of functionally graded nano/micro rods with deformable boundary conditions using a Fourier sine series solution for the first time. The eigen value problem is constructed using the Stokes' transform to deformable boundary conditions and also the convergence and accuracy of the present methodology are discussed in various numerical examples. The small size coefficient influence on the free torsional vibration characteristics is studied from the point of different parameters for both deformable and rigid boundary conditions. It shows that the torsional vibrational response of functionally graded nanorods are effected by geometry, small size effects, boundary conditions and material composition. Furthermore, for all deformable boundary conditions in the event of nano-sized FG nanorods, the incrementing of the small size parameters leads to increas the torsional frequencies.
Reinforced concrete vertical silos are universal structures that store large amounts of granular materials. Due to the asymmetric structure, heavy load, uneven storage material distribution, and the difference between the storage volume and the storage material bulk density, the corresponding earthquake is very complicated. Some scholars have proposed the calculation method of horizontal forces on reinforced concrete vertical silos under the action of earthquakes. Without considering the effect of torsional effect, this article aims to reveal the expansion factor of the silo group considering the torsional effect through experiments. Through two-way seismic simulation shaking table tests on reinforced concrete column-supported group silo structures, the basic dynamic characteristics of the structure under earthquake are obtained. Taking into account the torsional response, the structure has three types of storage: empty, half and full. A comprehensive analysis of the internal force conditions under the material conditions shows that: the different positions of the group bin model are different, the side bin displacement produces a displacement difference, and a torsional effect occurs; as the mass of the material increases, the structure's natural vibration frequency decreases and the damping ratio Increase; it shows that the storage material plays a role in reducing energy consumption of the model structure, and the contribution value is related to the stiffness difference in different directions of the model itself, providing data reference for other researchers; analyzing and calculating the model stiffness and calculating the internal force of the earthquake. As the horizontal side shift increases in the later period, the torsional effect of the group silo increases, and the shear force at the bottom of the column increases. It is recommended to consider the effect of the torsional effect, and the increase factor of the torsional effect is about 1.15. It can provide a reference for the structural safety design of column-supported silos.

Excessive torsional behaviour is one of the major reasons for failure of buildings, as inferred from past earthquakes. Numerous seismic codes across the world specify a displacement-based or drift-based criterion for classifying buildings as torsionally irregular. In recent years, quite a few researchers have pointed out some of the inherent deficiencies associated with the current codal guidelines on torsional irregularity. This short communication paper aims to envisage the need for a revision of the displacement-based guidelines on torsional irregularity, and further highlight the appropriateness of a rotation-based criterion. A set of 6 reinforced concrete building models with asymmetric shear walls are analysed using ETABS v18.0.2, by varying the number of stories from 1 to 9, and the torsional irregularity coefficient of various stories is calculated using the displacement-based formula. Since rotation about the vertical axis is a direct indication of the twist experienced by a building, the calculated torsional irregularity coefficients of all stories are compared with the corresponding floor rotations. The conflicting results obtained for the torsional irregularity coefficients are projected through five categories, namely mismatch with floor rotations, inconsistency in trend, lack of clarity in incorporation of negative values, sensitivity to low values of displacement and error conceived in the mathematical formulation. The findings indicate that the irregularity coefficient does not accurately represent the torsional behaviour of buildings in a realistic sense. The Indian seismic code-based values of 1.2 and 1.4, which are used to characterize buildings as torsionally irregular are observed to be highly sensitive to the numerical values of displacements, rather than the actual degree of rotation. The study thus emphasizes the revision of current guidelines based on a more relevant rotation-based or eccentricity-based approach.

In a previous study, design charts where proposed to help the torsional design of axially restricted reinforced concrete (RC) beams with squared cross section. In this article, new design charts are proposed to cover RC beams with rectangular cross section. The influence of the height to width ratio of the cross section on the behavior of RC beams under torsion is firstly shown by using theoretical and experimental results. Next, the effective torsional strength of a reference RC beam is computed for several values and combinations of the study variables, namely: height to width ratio of the cross section, concrete compressive strength, torsional reinforcement ratio and level of the axial restraint. To compute the torsional strength, the modified Variable Angle Truss Model for axially restricted RC beams is used. Then, an extensive parametric analysis based on multivariable and nonlinear correlation analysis is performed to obtain nonlinear regression equations which allow to build the new design charts. These charts allow to correct the torsional strength in order to consider the favourable influence of the compressive axial stress that arises from the axial restraint.

With the results of calculation for natural frequencies the reponses of forced coupled vibration of propulsion shafting system were investigated by the modal analysis method. For the forced vibration response analysis, the axial exciting forces, the axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively considered. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as follows.-The torsional vibration amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces of the crank shaft. -The axial vibration amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces as well as the radial exciting forces of the crank shaft. The increase of the amplitudes is observed in the speed range at the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. 1The closer the torsional and axial critical speed. the larger coupling effect becomes. -The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong comparing with axial exciting forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, the following conclusions are obtained. -Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimensional model is still valid. -The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is improtant. especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimensional model is inaccurate in most of cases.
Due to earthquakes, many structures suffered extensive damages that were attributed to the torsional effect caused by mass, stiffness or strength eccentricity. Due to this type of asymmetry torsional moments are generated that are imposed by means of additional shear forces developed at the vertical resisting structural elements of the buildings. Although the torsional effect on the response of reinforced concrete buildings was the subject of extensive research over the last decades, a quantitative index measuring the amplification of the shear forces developed at the vertical resisting elements due to lateral-torsional coupling valid for both elastic and elastoplastic response states is still missing. In this study a reliable index capable of assessing the torsional effect is proposed. The performance of the proposed index is evaluated and its correlation with structural response quantities like displacements, interstorey drift, base torque, shear forces and upper diaphragm's rotation is presented. Torsionally stiff, mass eccentric single-story and multistory structures, subjected to bidirectional excitation, are considered and nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed using natural records selected for three hazard levels. It was found that the proposed index provides reliable prediction of the magnitude of torsional effect for all test examples considered.

In this paper, a new type of pi+ezoelectric stepping motor is designed, manufactured and tested. This motor is composed of piezoelectric torsional actuator and a pair of one-way clutch bearings. The torsional actuator consists of 16-polygonal tube of piezoceramic that can produce an angular displacement associated with shear mode. One-way clutch bearing converts oscillation of torsional actuator into a continuous stepping rotation. The proposed stepping motor does not require any conversion mechanism for stepping motion like any other motors. In the design process, the shear resonance mode of piezoelectric actuator is analyzed by using a commercial finite element analysis program, and the performance of the fabricated torsional actuator is measured. $0.124^{\circ}$ of maximum angular displacement is measured in square wave excitation on the actuator only. The stepping motor is manufactured by assembling a pair of one-way clutch bearings and the torsional actuator. The maximum rotation speed of 72rpm and the blocking torque of 3.136 mNm are measured at 3540 Hz and 100V/mm. Once the proposed piezoelectric stepping motor is miniaturized, it can be used for many compact and precise moving applications.

After studying the composition about the torsional shafting of main engine for fishing vessel with Power Take Off (PTO) System, the authors made a computer program using the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM) for analyzing torsional vibration about the shafting with PTO system and nonlinear elastic coupling. The torsional shafting of main engine was separated by 3 types according to the connecting. The torsional shafting of main engine was separated by 3 types according to the connecting condition of main engine with propeller or the PTO system or both of them. In this paper, the change of natural frequencies and natural modes according to connecting condition of torsional shafting and nonlinear elastic coupling were analyzed. The accuracy of the TSCM was confirmed by comparing with the computational results of the Finite Element Method.
Wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) standard tall building were conducted using a three-degree-of-freedom base hinged aeroelastic(BHA) model. Experimental investigation into the effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness on the wind-induced response characteristics and wind excitation mechanisms was carried out. The wind tunnel test results highlight the significant effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness, on both the normalised along-wind and cross-wind acceleration responses for reduced wind velocities ranging from 4 to 20. Coupled translational-torsional motion and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness also have significant impacts on the amplitude-dependent effect caused by the vortex resonant process, and the transfer of vibrational energy between the along-wind and cross-wind directions. These resulted in either an increase or decrease of each response component, in particular at reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, the contribution of vibrational energy from the torsional motion to the cross-wind response of the building model can be greatly amplified by the effect of resonance between the vortex shedding frequency and the torsional natural frequency of the building model.
