This paper proposes new types of models that have coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) configurations to increase torque transmission capability. They have flux concentrating structures at the outer low speed rotor, and permanent magnets (PMs) are embedded in the space between stationary pole pieces. The torque performances of the proposed models are compared with those of a basic CMG model. The harmonic torque components due to air gap field harmonics are also analyzed to investigate the torque contribution of each harmonic by using finite element analysis (FEA) and the Maxwell stress tensor. The proposed CMG model is optimized to have high torque density with low torque ripples by response surface methodology (RSM). Compared to the basic CMG model, the proposed model has a huge increase in transmitted torque density, and is very advantageous in term of PM use.

A new torque measuring apparatus adopting the basic principle of a capacitive type sensor is proposed in this article. Two plate electrodes are working as a capacitive sensor, whose capacitance varies as torque is applied. One end of each plate is connected to the torque carrying shaft. Output characteristics of the torque sensor were theoretically analyzed and its validity was investigated through experiment. Calculations and calibration experiments show that the output is nonlinear, that is, the sensitivity is very high at low torque but decreases as torque increases. The sensitivity of the proposed system is about 100 times roughly higher than that of a conventional 4-strain gauge type torque sensor.

Although the switched reluctance motor (SRM) has a several advantages such as simple magnetic structure, robustness, wide range of speed characteristics and simple driving, it has a considerable inherent torque ripple and speed variation duet to the driving characteristics of pulse current waveform and the nonlinear inductance profile. The high torque ripple and speed variation inhibits wide application. The minimization of the torque ripple is very important in high performance servo drive applications, which require smooth operation with minimum torque pulsations. This paper presents the new SRM torque modeling technique for the control of instantaneous torque. The SRM is modeled by the database of torque profiles for every small variation in currents and rotor angles, which is inferred from the several measured data by the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference technique. Simulation results demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed torque modeling technique are presented.
A major problem in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is torque ripple, which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. This work focuses on reducing the undesirable torque ripple in SRM by modifying stator and rotor geometry. This paper presents a comparative study on torque ripple minimization in SRM with modified pole shapes such as stator pole taper, stator pole face with non-uniform air gap and pole shoe attached to rotor pole. Further this paper presents a detailed sensitivity analysis of the effect of different geometrical parameters that alter the pole face shapes on the performance of SRM. The analysis is performed using finite-element method considering average torque and torque ripple as performance parameters. Based on the analysis, a design combining stator pole taper with non-uniform air gap is proposed to improve the torque characteristics of SRM. The dynamic characteristics of the proposed design are simulated and the results show satisfactory reduction in torque ripple.
The torque ripple of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) is the main disadvantage that limits the industrial application of these motors. Although several methods for smooth-toque operation (STO) have been proposed, STO works well only within a certain torque and speed range because of the constraints of the supply voltage and peak current. Based on previous work that sought to expand the STO range, a scheme is developed in this study to determine the maximum smooth torque range at each speed. The relationship between the maximum smooth torque and speed is defined as the smooth torque speed characteristics (STSC), a concept similar to torque speed characteristics (TSC). STSC can be utilized to evaluate torque utilization by comparing it with TSC. Thus, the concept benefits the special design of SRMs, especially for the generation of smooth torque. Furthermore, the torque sharing function (TSF) derived from the proposed method can be applied to STO, which produces a higher smooth torque over a wider speed range in contrast to four typical TSFs. TSimulation and experimental results verify the proposed method.
The coaxial magnetic gear with the flux concentrating structure is known that it has the torque performance advantage over the coaxial magnetic gear having surface mounted permanent magnet, thanks to the flux focusing effect. But, if the solid cores are used in the modulating pieces and rotor cores to consider the mechanical reliability and cost reduction, the operating torque of the flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gear can be significantly diminished because the iron losses at the solid cores affect the actual transmitted torque. Furthermore, the modulating pieces and rotor cores have different characteristics of the iron losses from one another, because the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density, which cause the iron losses, are different. Thus, in this paper, we focused on the analysis of the characteristics of the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density and resultant eddy current losses in the surface mounted PM and flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gears, when these coaxial magnetic gears have the solid cores at the modulating pieces and rotor cores. The characteristics of pull-out torque (static torque), operating torque (dynamic torque), and efficiency are also researched, and compared by the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment.

The purpose of this study is to identify torque characteristics in capacitor type electric motors and to illustrate the effects of several design parameters on the fluctuating components of the motor torque. To do this, two revolving field theory and stationary reference frame theory were applied to derive governing equations for the torque generated by motor. For simulation studies, parameters of the motor components were measured under the conditions of no loading and locking. Based on these, effects of several design variables on the torque characteristics were analyzed and compared with the actual measurements, which were estimated indirectly by measuring the stator voltage and current. Then, some illustrative improvements in design are suggested by taking Taguchi method.
In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be Propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

This paper proposes the algorithm of torque distribution in the electric wheel-chair using 2D joystick for drive safety. For the accurate driving performance, the specific and precise torque distribution is required in both wheels depending on signals of X-Y axis that is generated from 2D joystick. The signals of X-Y axis from joystick are transformed into the propulsion force and the torque reference. And the torque reference can be generated through the dynamic model of wheel-chair. The optimal dynamic characteristics of the electric powered wheelchair can be obtained, by adjusting the sensitivity coefficients of propulsion force and torque reference, In addition, the system takes smooth and stable control characteristics due to continuous torque output at all directions of joystick. The several simulations verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm about torque distribution.
