  • In order to establish the optimal soil moisture, seeding date and nitrogen fertilization, yield and its components grown at 3 different seeding dates and 2 nitrogen fertilizations were compared and analyzed in adaly(Coix lachyma-jobi L. var. mayuen). The results are summarized as follows: Heading date and maturity date were earlier in early seeding date than in late seeding date. Days to heading was shortened as the seeding date was late. Stem length, stem diameter, and tiller number were increased in irrigation than control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. The top and the root dry weight were increased in irrigation than in control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. Net photosynthetic rate was increased significantly in irrigation. Occurrance of leaf blight disease was much lower in irrigation than in control. 1000 grain weight and grain yield were higher in irrigation than in control, and were decreased as the seeding date was late. Rate of sterility was lower in irrigation than in control.

  • Two methods of nitrogen application at the 4th leaf stage were evaluated in direct-seeding rice cultivation on dry paddy soil: one was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy condition before irrigation (TNDP) for labor saving, and the other was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy with mechanical rotavation of the inter-row space (TNDPIR) for increasing the efficiency of nitrogen. To evaluate these two application methods, leaf chlorophyll contents, growth characteristics and yields were compared with two conventional methods, basal application (BA) and top dressing on flooded paddy condition at the 4th leaf stage (TNFP). The SPAD value of rice in TNDP was similar with that in TNFP throughout the whole growth stage of rice. Also, there were no differences in rice growth and yield between the two methods. However, in TNDPIR, the SPAD value was the highest during tillering stage among the four application methods, and the tiller number, LAI at heading stage and the panicle number were higher than the two conventional methods.

  • Experiments were conducted to effect of seeding rates and growth regulator (KIM-112) application on lodging resistance and yield in direct seeding on flooded paddy surface. The number of seedlings per $m^2$ were ranged from 61 to 143, and seedling ratios were from 71.7 to 76.1%. The culm length was increased with the higher seeding rates. The culm length was significantly shortened by KIM-112 application, and the shortened effect of internodes were various with application times. The leaf angles with the culm and top leaves were errected and position of light reception by KIM-112 application, also the weight of culm base was increased. The bending moment at breaking of culm and culm diameter were decreased according to the higher seeding rates. The number of panicles per $m^2$ were increased according to the higher seeding rates. The ripened grain rate and 1, 000 grains weight became higher than the untreated control.

  • This study examined root growth and distribution under the direct seeding of rice cultivars developed in Korea, Japan, and the U.S. Cultivars from the U.S., especially 'M202' and 'Caloro', had a high ratio of the dry matter partitioning for root and top plant components. Caloro had high root and top growth. 'Koshihikari' from Japan showed the lowest ratio of R/T (root/total dry matter) due to the small amount of root and top plant growth. Most Japanese cultivars except transplanted 'Hatsuboshi' showed low ratio of R/T. Patterns of root distribution for each soil block were recorded by the root box-pin board method. Roots of all cultivars were distributed in blocks A, C, and E in the middle of box, i.e., just below the plant base. Roots of 'Dongjin', M202, and Caloro were distributed deeper than the others. Roots of transplanted Hatsuboshi developed much better than direct seeded Hatsuboshi. Total root weight density was highest in Caloro followed by Dongjin, 'Gancheok', 'Calrose', and the others. The root density of Caloro was twice as much as those of the others except Dongjin. According to cumulative percentages of root distribution on each soil layer, roots of most cultivars were distributed below 20cm. The U.S. cultivars showed vertically well developed root systems as compared to others. A large amount of roots were distributed in the top 15cm of soil layer for Hatsuboshi and Koshinikari, and their root systems appeared to be shallow. In contrast, the rates of root distribution in the top 10cm of soil layer were low for Dongjin, Calrose, and Caloro. These cultivars had relatively deep root systems.

  • No-till direct seeding cultivation of rice has major advantages such as saving of labor and cost by eliminating tillage, preparation of seed bed and trans-planting procedure compared to the conventional transplanting cultivation. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of straw treatment and nitrogen levels on the rice growth in no-till direct-seeding cultivation. Rice straw, vetch straw, and the mixture of both of the straws were mulched on the surface of soil before seeding while 4 levels of nitrogen fertilizer, 0, 7, 9, and 11 kkg/10a respectively, were applied at 3 split times, 3-weeks after sowing, 5-weeks after sowing and the panicle initiation stage. Mulching of vetch straw significantly reduced seedling establishment of rice which may be attributed to low oxidation-reduction potential of soil by vetch mulching treatment. Vetch straw increased the concentration of soil ammonium leading to an extension of the greenish leaf to panicle initiation stage. Agronomic nitrogen use efficiency (AD $E_{N}$) in heavy-mixed straw mulching plots was lower than other treatments. Grain yield and AU $E_{N}$ in the vetch treatment were less affected by fertilized N levels. Conclusively, it is suggested that heavy straw mulching was not efficient for rice seedling establishment and nitrogen usage.e.

  • No-tillage is an effective practice to save labor input and reduce methane emission from the paddy. Effects of tillage and cultivation methods on carbon accumulation and soil properties were investigated in the treatments of tillage-transplanting (T-T), tillage-wet hill seeding (T-WS), minimum tillage-dry seeding (MT-S) and no-tillage dry seeding (NT-S) of rice. Soil carbon was higher in NT-S and MT-S, compared to T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, soil carbon contents were the highest in the top soil (5 cm depth) and decreased with soil depth. In T-T and T-WS, however soil carbon contents showed no significant difference up to soil depth of 15 cm from the top. Carbon content was the highest in the soil particle size under $106{\mu}m$ and decreased as the soil particle size increased. Contents of water-stable aggregates in NT-S and MT-S were higher than those of T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, contents of water-stable aggregates were the highest in the top soil and significantly decreased with soil depth while no significant difference up to the soil depth of 15 cm in T-T and T-WS. Available $SiO_2$ contents in the top soil were the highest in NT-S and MT-S while the lowest in T-T and T-WS. It is concluded that minimum or no disturbance of soil in rice cultivation can increase carbon accumulation in the soil, especially in the top layer, and subsequently contribute to the formation of the water-stable soil aggregates.

  • A series of experiments were carried out for two successive years to investigate the productivity of forage turnip in mid-northern area of Korea. Fresh matter and dry matter yields of 6 foreign cultivars (Purple Top Strap Leaved, Purple Top White Globed, Seven Top, Shogoin, White Egg and Amber Globe) seeded either in early spring or in autumn after harvesting forage corn were evaluated with different seeding date and harvesting date as well as with different level of fertilization. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The earlier the seeding date in spring (Mar. 29, Apr. 12, Apr. 16) was, the higher was the yield of fresh matter and dry matter as the plant growth ceased after mid June, when the temperature began to rise. 2. In spite of its high DM yield, the Japanese cultivar, Shogoin, showed poor forage quality for summer feeding due to its earlier bolting in harvesting season. 3. Of the 6 cultivars Purple Top White Globed showed highest DM yield (800 kg/ 10a) in mid area including SEOUL irrespective of planting season. 4. Although the turnips showed mostly positive yield responses to fertization, the differences were not great especially above the level of$N-P_2O_5-K_2O$: 5-3-4 kg/lOa. 5. IN TAEGWALLYONG, a northern area of Korea, the average fresh matter yield of the six cultivars tested amounted to 3,500 kg/lOa when drilled on June 30 and harvested on Aug. 30, although bulb formation during the summer was relatively poor. 6. Concluded, forage turnip is regarded to be a suitable catch-crop which has the potential to maintain and increase the total forage production in mid-northern area of Korea. The intercropping is recommendable especially for autumn planting well past the time forage corn has been harvested.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the proper split application method of nitrogen fertilizer for early dry seeding culture of rice in Honam plain area from 1997 to 1998 in Korea. Dongjinbyeo was selected as rice variety for this experiment. The rate of $160kg\;ha^{-1}$ of nitrogen was split as 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at three different application time combination ; T1) basal-5th leaf-panicle formation(PF) stage, T2) 3rd leaf-5th leaf-PF, and T3) 3rd leaf-7th leaf-PF. The content of $NH_4-N$ in soil at 5th leaf stage was higher in top dressing plots(T2, T3) compared with basal application(T1), at 7th leaf stage it was most in top dressed at 3rd leaf and 5th leaf stage, but there was no difference at heading stage. Amount of nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency was higher in the order of T3, T2 and T1(basal application). Spikelet number per unit area was more in the order of T3, T2 and T1, but rate of ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight were not significantly different among three nitrogen split application methods. Milled rice yields were higher in top dressed plots compared with basal nitrogen application plots. From the results of this experiment, reasonable nitrogen split application method for early dry seeding culture of rice could be 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at 3rd leaf, 7th leaf and panicle formation stage.

  • Direct-seeding has major advantages such as labor and cost saving by eliminating preparation of seed bed and transplanting. But, it required increased input of fertilizers and pesticides because of the extended paddy period. Direct seeding in wet paddy (DSWP) gives faster growth and more uniform seedling emergence than direct-seeding in dry paddy. This research had an objective to develop an efficient N management practices for DSWP with split application of N fertilizer. A paddy field experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of starter N and N-topdressing which was delayed N application until 5-leaf stage, with comparison to transplanting (TP). Total amount of N application were two levels; 110kg and 77kg/ha. The N applications were split four times during rice growth stages; starter, topdressing at 5-leaf stage, top dressing at tillering stage, and topdressing at panicle initiation stage. DSWP had more tillers/$m^2$ than TP, but with the delayed heading. The DSWP plots which received N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage without starter N had higher leaf area index (LAI) and leaf greenness than the TP plot. Also, these DSWP plots had high leaf-N concentration at the heading stage, as calculated from leaf chlorophyll meter readings. Rice yield in DSWP with N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage was significantly higher than that in TP and in DSWP with starter N. Energy and N use efficiency were improved in DSWP with N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage. But, there were no significant differences in grain yield between the two levels of total amounts of N applications, 77kg and 110kg/ha. We concluded that starter N could not be used effectively by rice seedlings, but topdressing N at 5-leaf stage was an efficient N management for rice growth and yield in DSWP system.
