This study was conducted to reproduce the woodworking process of Baekje wooden storage facilities. Green timber of Quercus spp. was processed using ancient woodworking tools, and the tool-trace formed in this process were compared with the tool-trace of actual excavated artifacts. In the tool-trace analysis, the length and shape of the tool-trace were objectively recorded using a 3D Scan, and that were difficult to confirm with photograph were confirmed through stereoscopic microscope. As a result, there were two types of adze's tool-trace. One of them is minute straight Blade-top trace line when trimming the wood surface and the other is Plucked trace that appear when strongly chop at the wood. When a chisel bat was not used, a long and wide continuous shape blade trace was produced. And when the chisel head was struck with the chisel bat, a straight blade-top trace was regularly observed. Saw-trace was identified in several layers with fine straight stripes. Through this, it was found that the tool-trace of the woodworking tools, which is estimated to have been used in each process, and the tool-trace remaining in the Baekje wooden storage facility coincide.
Recently the monitoring system of tool setting in high speed precision machining center is required for manufacturing products that have highly complex and small shape, high precision and high function. It is very important to reduce time to setup tool in order to improve the machining precision and the productivity and to protect the breakage of cutting tool as the shape of product is smaller and more complex. Generally, the combination of errors that geometrical clamping error of fixing tool at the spindle of machining tool and the asynchronized error of driving mechanism causes that the run-out of tool reaches to 3$^{\sim}$20 times of the thickness of cutting chip. And also the run-out is occurred by the misalignment between axis of tool shank and axis of spindle and spindle bearing in high speed rotation. Generally, high speed machining is considered when the rotating speed is more than 8,000 rpm. At that time, the life time of tool is reduced to about 50% and the roughness of machining surface is worse as the run-out is increased to 10 micron. The life time of tool could be increased by making monitoring of tool-setup easy, quick and precise in high speed machining tool. This means the consumption of tool is much more reduced. And also it reduces the manufacturing cost and increases the productivity by reducing the tool-setup time of operator. In this study, in order to establish the concept of tool-setup monitoring the measuring method of the geometrical error of tool system is studied when the spindle is stopped. And also the measuring method of run-out, dynamic error of tool system, is studied when the spindle is rotated in 8,000${\sim}$60,000 rpm. The dynamic phenomena of tool-setup are analyzed by implementing the monitoring system of rotating tool system and the non-contact measuring system of micro displacement in high speed.

In order to inspect burr geometry and hole quality in micro-drilling processes, a cost-effective method using an image processing and shape from focus (SFF) methods on the machine tool is proposed. A CCD camera with a zoom lens and a novel illumination unit is used in this paper. Since the on-machine vision unit is incorporated with the CNC function of the machine tool, direct measurement and condition monitoring of micro-drilling processes are conducted between drilling processes on the machine tool. Stainless steel and hardened tool steel are used as specimens, as well as twist drills made of carbide are used in experiments. Validity of the developed system is confirmed through experiments.
This paper presents a new method for cutting steel with a diamond tool using electrolysis. The electrolysis is adopted in the diamond cutting to prevent the high chemical activity between a diamond tool and an iron-based workpiece. The basic principle of the method is to oxdize a thin substrate of the workpiece by electrolysis ahead of the diamond tool which cuts the oxidized layer. A desired shape can be obtained by repeating this process. The cutting force is reduced because the diamond tool removes only the weakened material by electroysis. The reduction of the cutting force suppresses the excessive wear of the diamond tool. The oxidization penetrates several micrometers in depth along the previously formed shape. The corrosion rates depend on current density and make suggestions on the optimum cutting conditions.

Recently, the development of high speed and high precision NC-lathe for piston head machining is needed for the complexity and diversity of the piston head shape used in automobile reciprocating engine. THe piston head has many complex shapes in the aspect of fuel economy, such as ovality, profile, double ovality and recess. Among them, for the maching of the over shape of 0.1~1mm the cutting tool should move periodically symchronized with the rotation of piston workpiece. The cutting tool feeed system must have high positioning accuracy for the precise machining, high speed for the fast maching and high dynamic stiffness for the cutting force. The linear brushless DC motor is used for satisfying these coditions. The ballbush guide and supporting guide using turcite is used for the guidance of the feed drive system. Linear encoder, digital servo ampllifer and controller are used for driving the motor. THis paper presents the design and simulation of the new tool feed system for noncircular machining.

For the improvement of geometrical accuracy in end milling, cutting method and cutting condition selection are investigated in this paper. As machining processes are composed of several steps such as roughing, semi-finishing. and finishing, cutting forces and tool deflection are calculated considering surface shape generated by the previous cutting. The effects of tool teeth numbers, tool geometry, and cutting conditions on the form error are analyzed. Using the from error prediction method from tool deflection, cutting condition for geometrical accuracy improvement is discussed. The characteristics and the difference of generated surface shape in up and down milling are dealt with and over-cut free condition in up milling is presented. The form error reduction method by alternating up and down milling is also suggested. The effectiveness of the presented method is examined from a set of cutting tests under various cutting conditions. This research contributes to cutting process optimization for the geometrical accuracy improvement in die and mold manufacture.

In machining screws which are important members in mono pumps or progressive cavity pumps CNC turning center with 3 axes is usually used. This sort of screw machining requires large amount of CL data points and rotational tools are used in machining. When working out the CL data points consideration of possible tool interference is important in order to avoid undercut. This paper describes the checking methods of tool interference in the screw machining on the CNC turning center. First of all a specific shape of a screw cross-section that could commonly be applied to all screws was chosen and then possible tool interference associated with that shape was identified. Checking method was mathematically developed and verified. This checking method will be utilized in the CAM system developed by the authors for screw machining on the 3-axis CNC turning center.

Transforming small ultrasonic energy into large mechanical energy is the essential feature of ultrasonic vibration in various application fields. This energy amplification can be obtained by achieving resonance condition between booster or tool horn and transducer. When it has uniform section with small sectional area, one dimensional analysis provides good estimation of the natural frequency of the horn. But, for arbitrary shape of horn, one dimensional analysis can no longer be applied. At present, designing tool horn whose natural frequency is identical to that of transducer requires serveral stages of trial and error in actual manufacturing process. In this paper, frequency analysis program is developed to easily predict the natural frequency of ultrasonic vibration cutting tool with axisymmetry and 3- dimensional shape using finite element method.

In this paper, we investigate path compensation scheme for the machining errors due to tool deflection in 2D contour machining. The significance of the deflection error is first shown by experiments, and a direct compensation scheme is sought. In the presented scheme, the tool path is evaluated and correcte based on the instantaneous deflection force model, until the desired contour can be obtained under the presence of tool deflection in actual machining. In the sense that the developed method estimates and compensates the machining errors via modifying the tool path, it is distinguished from the previous approach based on geometric simulation and cutting simulation. Further, it can be viewed as a direct and active method toward direct shape control in CNC machining. Simulation results are included to show the validity and adequacy of the path-modification scheme under various cutting conditions.
The recent manufacturing industry in Japan has found it difficult to transfer skills from trained workers to inexperienced workers because the former ages and then retires. This is a particular problem for lathe process, as this operation requires explicit and tacit knowledge, and defining the skills clearly in a manual is difficult. This study aims to develop a training system for lathe operation by using a simulator; this includes formulas that help define the relationship between the speed of tool feed and cutting sound/shape of chips which were proposed in the preceding study. The developed training system is verified the effectiveness.
