  • This study analyzed private pension dependency of Korea and U.S. households using the most recent dataset of two countries. For this purpose, 2013 Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) of national pension research institute in Korea and 2013 SCF(Survey of Consumer Finances) of FRB in U.S. were used. The private pension dependency was defined as the proportion of private pension wealth among total financial wealth in each household and tobit model was used to investigate determinants of private pension dependency of the two countries. After controlling for other factors, household income and net worth, age, educational attainment, and health status of householder were crucial determinants of private pension dependency for both countries. Householder's age, educational attainment, and health tend to increase the private pension dependency in Korea and U.S. However, household income and net worth affected the private pension dependency opposite direction. The private pension dependency increased with high level of income and net worth in Korea, while it decreased with high level of income and net worth in U.S. Results of this study provide useful implications for future pension system and policy in Korea.

  • This study observes the difference in the actual regional ripple effect of the decrease in admission resources due to the decrease in school age population, which has been weak in empirical studies, and how much the decrease in competition rate by department nationwide provides a significant shock to the decrease in enrollment rate in the population unit. An empirical quantitative analysis was attempted. As a result of applying the panel-tobit regression model, a clear gap was confirmed in the decrease in the registration rate due to the decrease in the competition rate both nationally and in the provinces, and in particular, a highly significant relationship was derived with the decrease in the recruitment rate. In particular, the sensitivity of the risk of unrecruitment due to a decrease in competition rate was the highest in the Jeolla region (0.499), followed by the Gangwon region (0.475) and the Gyeongsang region (0.471), and the metropolitan region (0.158) was confirmed to be the most stable. This suggests that the gap in insufficient funding has gradually widened by region over the past 10 years, and that the shock wave becomes more pronounced in the provinces farther away from the metropolitan area. Based on this study, if we deviate from the standardized application of university development policies for the metropolitan area and regional universities, and present a customized higher education strategy for each region, it will be an opportunity to prevent local extinction due to a decrease in the school-age population and achieve coexistence with higher education institutions and regions at the same time.

  • Using the panel data of 31 regions in China from 2006 to 2021, this paper analyzes the efficiency and influencing factors of the fiscal expenditure on compulsory education in China. Through the analysis found that the efficiency of some economically developed regional is lower, but the efficiency of economically backward regional is higher. In order to further analyze the influencing factors of the efficiency of fiscal expenditures on compulsory education, using Tobit model is analyzed. It is found that regional per capita GDP and fiscal self-sufficiency rate have a negative impact on the efficiency of fiscal expenditure on compulsory education. Age structure, percentage of fiscal expenditure on compulsory education and level of teachers have a positive impact on the efficiency of fiscal expenditure on compulsory education. Fiscal decentralization has no significant effect on the efficiency of fiscal expenditure on compulsory education.

  • In this study, value of VMS (Variable Message Sign) traffic information is estimated by using CVM (Contingent Valuation Method), which is developed to quantify the value of non-marketable goods in environmental economics. CVM is used to estimate the value of goods provided by a project under consideration and then the project feasibility can be indirectly examined on the basis of the estimated value. This study focuses on estimating to estimate value of traffic information provided through VMS, a part of the transportation system enhancement project by Korea Expressway Corporation which is aimed at mitigating traffic problems on expressways. In particular, this study analyzes value of information separately by trip purpose, information type, and traffic flow condition. A state preference survey was designed to estimate the value of non-marketable traffic information. To maximize reliability of the survey results, a pilot survey was taken before the main survey. The open-ended question method was adopted in capturing users' willingness-to-pay. Both Tobit and binary Probit models were applied in estimating the value of VMS traffic information and their parameters were estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation. The estimation results suggests that the value of traffic information perceived by users is 518.28 KRW.

  • Today’s teenagers were significantly deficient of calcium intakes, taking on the average only 55.4 percents of the recommended. Milk was the major source of calcium intakes, and therefore the school milk program need to be readdressed to remedy this problem. However, school milk program(SMP) was said to be simply the substitute for milk at home, so that no more than a minimal effect on total milk consumption be warranted. This Study aimed to find out whether or not the school milk program was an effective measure to increase teenager’s milk consumption and explored the relation between school milk and total milk consumption for 1,079 junior and senior high school students who were surveyed by questionnaire from 15th June to 15th July in 2006. A Tobit model was used for the statistical analysis. In this model, we first regressed milk consumption on 5 variables i.e. degree of satisfaction, participation in SMP, sex, school, region. But the variable region was not significant statistically. Then we regressed on 4 variables except for region. The results showed 4 variables were all significant and the marginal effect of variable ‘participation in SMP’ was 1.3. Especially, the marginal effect 1.3 means that the students participating in the school milk program consumed 1.3cups more than the non-participants, which indicated the effectiveness of school milk program to improve the calcium deficiency program of teenagers.

  • This study analyzed the efficiency determinants of specialty construction companies by industry using the DEA model and the Tobit model. The analysis targets are 394 specialty construction companies as of 2022. As a result of analysis of efficiency determinants using 12 company characteristics as independent variables, the biggest problem for specialty construction companies was overall efficiency reduction due to rising labor costs. In addition, in a situation where construction companies' loan regulations are severe, the debt ratio was found to have a positive effect on efficiency. Company size had a different impact by industry, and the number of businesses held, credit score, and total capital turnover had an effect only on some industries. This study presents results that are an advance on existing research in that it strategically analyzes factors for improving the efficiency of specialty construction companies. However, it has limitations such as limiting the analysis to only specialty construction companies subject to external audit, insufficient number of companies subject to analysis by industry, and analyzing relative efficiency in the same category for each industry.

  • The Bayesian method can be applied successfully to the estimation of the censored regression model introduced by Tobin (1958). The Bayes estimates show improvements over the maximum likelihood estimate; however, the performance of the Bayesian interval estimation is questionable. In Bayesian paradigm, the prior distribution usually reflects personal beliefs about the parameters. Such subjective priors will typically yield interval estimators with poor frequentist properties; however, an objective noninformative often yields a Bayesian procedure with good frequentist properties. We examine the performance of frequentist properties of noninformative priors for the Tobit regression model.

  • The aims of this study were to examine whether there are consumer segments that have a propensity to be deal prone in purchasing processed foods and to identify those characteristics of consumers that reflect their deal proneness. Thus, raw data from the Korea Consumer Attitude Survey was analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, and Tobit regression. The major findings are as follows. Individual deal proneness are different according to regional and socio-economic characteristics, and the lifestyle of the consumers also affects deal proneness. Socio-economic variables that have significant impacts on deal proneness for processed foods are residential areas, preferred lifestyle types, sex, age, educational background of the household head and type of store mostly used. With regard to lifestyle, it was found that consumers with a lifestyle that includes convenience, brand pursuit, and convenience are more likely to have a higher degree of deal proneness for processed foods. From the results based on different food groups, it was found that deal proneness for different food groups is affected by the areas, types of sales promotion, and socio-economic characteristics of the consumers. This result suggests that the differences in the consumption of processed foods and deal proneness are indicative for the need to use marketing strategies that consider the characteristics of consumers.
