  • The metabolic disturbance and nephrotoxicity induced by sodium dichromate (20 mg/kg, SC) have been diminished by the administration of Korean red ginseng extract (100 mg/kg, PO). Red ginseng has a powerful potency on the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) increment shown in the early 2h after dichromate intoxication. It normalized the dichromate induced hepatic glycogenolysis. The effect of red ginseng on dichromate induced nephrotoxicity was investigated by hematological analysis, and urinalysis. Ginseng treatment significantly reduced the increases in the urinary excretion of protein and glucose. These effects were dose dependent. Ginseng protected the accumulation of BUN and cretonne in the blood, caused by dichromate intoxication. Unlike CaEDTA, ginseng did not change the urinary excretion chromium. And it could not convert htxavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. These results suggest that ginseng treatment is effective in decreasing the metabolic disturbance, one of the earliest signs of dichromate toxicity, resulting in the protective effect of dichromate induced renal damage.

  • As a part of studies on the quality control of crude drug preparation (So-Shi-Ho-Tang), index components of Glycyrrhizae Radix were identified by TLC and quantified by HPLC. Specific red spot (Rf=0.47) was identified in acid hydrolysate of glycosidic fraction on silica gel plate with benzene/ethyl acetate (1 : 1, v/v). The content of glycyrrhizin was determined by quantification of glycyrrhetinic acid by HPLC on ${\mu}-Bondapak\;C_{18}$ column with $MeOH/H_2O/HAc$ (78 : 19 : 3, v/v). Its recovery rate in the extract granules, compared to the content in the Glycyrrhizae Radix, was $83.3{\pm}0.7%$.

  • A new glycosyldiglyceride was purified from the ethylacetate soluble fraction of Panax ginseng extract by silica gel column chromatography and chemical structure of the compound was studied with IR, MS, $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy and degradation method. The carbohydrate moiety was identified as ${\beta}-D-glucose$, and palmitic acid occupied about 70% of the acyl groups. This compound was first purified from Panax ginseng.

  • Activity of endogenous growth regulator in 4th year Panax ginseng root was investigated by second leaf sheath test of rice seedling and paper chromatogram of a acidic fraction of methanol extract before (March 28) and after (May 9) emergence of root bud, at the late season (Sept.4) and after leaf fall (November 11). GA$_3$ and ABA were used as reference. According to paper and high performance liquid chromatography of samples and authentic growth regulators the presence of insole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) and abscisic acid (cis and trans ABA) was confirmed. These three regulators appeared to consist of major system though the existence of other regulators could not be ruled out. IAA activity seemed little changed through out the seasons. GA activity decreased in the later stages while ABA activity increased.

  • Chemical compositions of Flue - cured and Burley tobacco leaf and smoke were analyzed to find out simple correlation between compositions. Based on the simple correlation ( $r$ ) data, four regression equations were obtained for dry condensate and nicotine in smoke as follows, $Y_{FT}=\;0.816+4.638X_1+0.346X_2$......................................(1) $Y_{BT}=\;0.235+0.884X_3-0.088X_4$......................................(2) $Y_{FN}=\;0.015+0.090X_5+0.476X_1$......................................(3) $Y_{BN}=-0.026+0.101X_3-0.006X_4$.........................................(4) where, $Y_{FT}$ : dry condensate (mg/cig.) in cigarette smoke of Flue-cured $Y_{BT}$ : dry condensate (mg /cig. ) in cigarette smoke of Burley $Y_{FN}$ : nicotine contents (mg/cig.)in cigarette smoke of Flue-cured $Y_{BN}$ : nicotine contorts (mg/cig. ) in cigarette smoke of Burley $X_1$ : total alkaloid contents (%) of Flue-cured $X_2$ : curde ash contents (%)of Flue -cured $X_3$ : alcohol -benzene extract contents (%) of Burley $X_4$ : curde ash contents (%) of Burley $X_5$ : hexane extract content (%) of Flue -cured Standard deviation for regressions equations were obtained respectively. equation(1),$\pm$3.16 : equation (2),$\pm$1.94 : equation (3),$\pm$0.35 , equation (4) $\pm$ 0.33. Regression equations between dry condensate and nicotine contorts in cigarette smoke were also obtained in the forms of equation(5) and(6) $Y_{FN}$= 0.274 $Y_{FT}$- 3.259............................(5) $Y_{BN}$= 0.249 $Y_{BT}$ - 2.093.............................(6) Standard deviations, $\pm$ 0.061 and $\pm$ 0.152, were obtained for regression equation(5) and (6) respectively.

  • Epimedium koreanum Nakai(EKN) has traditionally been well-known as a herbal medicine for the promotion of stamina and the improving sexual activity of human in oriental countries including Korea and China. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of EKN water-extract(0.025%,w/v) on age-related change of xenobiotic metabolizing system in rat liver. Long-term supply of the EKN extract to rats did not induce any discernible signs. However, the mass of liver and kidney were slightly increased by the dietary supplementation. Level of cytochrome P450, NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase, P450 dependent ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase benzphetamine N-demethylase and glutathione-S-transferase in liver were decreased with age, but, these activities in 24 months of age were declined more in rats supplied with EKN extract. Level of cytochrome b5 and NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase were also decreased with age, however, there was no significant difference between with and without EKN extract. These results indicate that long-term supplementation of EKN extract to rats from weaning to 24 months may be a burden on the liver function in old age, and may aggregate the decline of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes activities in old age.

  • In order to obtain bacterial metabolites inducing disease resistance in pepper plant, two hundred bacterial isolates were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tobacco, cucumber, and pepper plant. Ethyl acetate extract of each bacterial culture was used to screening for induction of resistance against phytophthora blight of pepper plant. Application of ethyl acetate extract of an isolate SH122 culture to pepper plant conferred resistance against phytophthora blight consistently and significantly. According to cellular fatty acid analysis and other characteristics, the SH122 culture were significantly lower than those on control plants treated with ethyl acetate extract of nutrient broth. The B. pumilus SH122 itself of ethyl acetate extract of its culture did not show antifungal activity against phytophthora blight in pepper plants.

  • Biological, physical and chemical characteristics of suppressive and conducive soils to ginseng root rot were investigated. Population of antagonistic microorganisms to Fusarium solani was much higher in suppressive soils than in conducive soils, whereas the numbers of Fusarium species were smaller in suppressive soils. Mycelial growth and chlamydospore formation of Fusarium solani were inhibited in suppressive soils. In the water extract of suppressive soils, lysis of germination tube and macroconidia of F. solani was occurred by antagonistic microorganisms at 4 hours after treatment. There were no significant differences in physical and chemical characteristics between supressive soils and conducive soils to ginseng root rot, however, clay content of suppressive soils was a little higher than that of conductive soils.
