  • The machinability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and tool wear behavior in machining of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was studied to understand the machining characteristics. This material is one of the strong candidate materials in present and future aerospace or medical applications. Recently, their usage has already been broaden to everyday's commercial applications such as golf club heads, finger rings and many decorative items. To anticipate the general use of this material and development of the titanium alloys in domestic facilities, the review and the study of the machining parameters for those alloys are necessary. This study is concentrated to the machining parameters of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy due to their dominant position in the production of titanium alloys.

  • In the present, the focus is on the synthesis of nanostructured TiC/Co composite powder by the spray thermal conversion process using titanium dioxide powder has an average particle size of 50 nm and cobalt nitrate as raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting methods. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder carbothermally reduced by the solid carbon. The synthesized TiC-15wt.%Co composite powder at 1473K for 2 hours had an average particle size of 150 nm.

  • This investigation reports the grinding characteristics of titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V). Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions and the grinding forces and specific grinding energies were measured to investigate the grindability of titanium alloy with the three different wheels including Diamond, Green carbide and Alumina. To investigate the grinding characteristics of titanium alloy grinding force, force-ratio, specific grinding energy and grinding -ratio, were measured. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM. Force-ratio of grinding of titanium alloy was very lower than that of grinding of SKD-11. Specific grinding energy are almost five times larger and rougher surface was obtained in titanium grinding.

  • The growth rate of solid grains in TiC-XC-2vol% and TiC-XC-30vo1% Ni cermets, where X=Zr, W or Mo, was fitted to an equation of the form $d^3$-$do^3$=Kt. The grain growth behavior during liquid phase sintering at 1673K decreased markedly with addition of $Mo_2$C or WC and increased with addition of ZrC. The contiguity ratio was greater in the alloys with smaller growth rate constant and decreased with increasing Ni content in the $TiC-Mo_2$C-Ni cermet. The grain growth mechanism could be explained by the effect of contiguous grain boundaries in restricting the overall grain growth.

  • To investigate the effects of substrate on transverse-rupture strength(TRS) and bonding strength between substrate and TiC layer coated by CVD, two kinds of substrate (substrate A:WC-9.5wt%Co-MC*[low C], substrate B: WC-6wt% Co-MC*[high C] were studied in terms of Cobalt and C contents respectively. For preparation of test samples the coating parameters of deposition time, deposition temperature and deposition pressure were varied. The result show that the carbon contents in substrates have greater effects on the TRS of the CVD TiC coated cemented carbide than Co contents in substrates.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the effect of cobalt oxide powder in the carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fine TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under flowing argon atmosphere. Changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. Titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder desalted at $600^{\circ}C$ had a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;Co_{3}O_4$. And the one desalted at $800^{\circ}C$ had a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;CoTiO_3$. In the case of the former powder, the reduction of cobalt oxide powder in the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder occurred at lower temperature than the latter one. However, the carbothermal reduction of titanium dioxide powder in the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder with a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;Co_{3}O_4$ occurred at higher temperature than the one with a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;CoTiO_3$. And also, the former powder showed a lower TiC formation ability than the latter one.

  • A Study on microstructure and elevated temperature strength of 18Cr-2Mo ferritic stainless steel castings strengthened by alloying small amounts of titanium and carbon, has been conducted. The morphology of titanium carbides showed spherical in shape and their distribution depended on the amount of alloying elements. Maximum density ($7{\times}10^5/cm^2$) of titanium carbides has been formed in the alloy containing 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon as alloying elements and the size of carbide particles is in the range of 0.5 to $3.0\;{\mu}m$. High temperature tensile and fatigue strength of this alloy were the highest among the alloys tested in this research. The fracture mode of the alloys containing alloying elements less that 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon showed intercrystalline fracture at room temperature, while the alloys containing higher amounts of alloying elements showed transcrystalline fracture. All of the alloys showed creep or ductile rupture mode at elevated temperature.
