The time-stepping boundary element method has been so far applied by the authors to transient heat conduction in isotropic solids as well as in orthotropic solids. In this paper, attempt is made to extend the method to 2-D transient heat conduction in arbitrarily anisotropic solids. The resulting boundary integral equation is discretized by means of the boundary element with quadratic interpolation. The final system of equations thus obtained is solved by advancing the time step from the given initial state to the final state. Through numerical compuation of a few examples the potential usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

This paper presents an improved characteristic analysis methodology for a 5-phase hybrid stepping motor. The basic approach is based on the use of equivalent magnetic circuit taking into account the localized saturation throughout the hybrid stepping motor. The finite element method(FEM) is used to generate the magnetic circuit parameters for the complex stator and rotor teeth and airgap considering the saturation effects in tooth and poles. In addition, the neural network is used to map a change of parameters and predicts their approximation. Therefore, the proposed method efficiently improves the accuracy of analysis by using the parameter characterizing localized saturation effects and reduces the computational time by using the neural network. An improved circuit model of 5-phase hybrid stepping motor is presented and its application is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a correction method for the error inherently created by time-step approximation in finite element analysis (FEA). For a simple RL and RLC linear circuit, the error in time-step analysis is analytically investigated, and a correction method is proposed for a non-linear system as well as a linear one. Then, for a practical inductor model, linear and non-linear time-step analyses are performed and the calculation results are corrected by the proposed methods. The accuracy of the corrected results is confirmed by comparing the electric input and output powers.
A preconditioned numerical method for gas-liquid to-phase flow is applied to solve cavitating flow. The present method employs a density based finite-difference method of dual time-stepping integration procedure and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with MUSCL-TVD scheme. A homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model is used. The method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristics at low Mach number. By this method, two-dimensional internal flows through a venturi tuve and decelerating cascades are computed and discussed.
A new and efficient implicit scheme is proposed to obtain a steady-state solution in time integration and the comparison of characteristics with the approximation ways for the implicit method to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is provided. The conservative, finite-volume cell-vertex upwind scheme and artificial compressibility method using dual time stepping for time accuracy is applied in this paper. The numerical results obtained indicate that the direct application of Jacobian matrix to the Lower and upper sweeps of implicit LU-SGS leads to better performance as well as convergence regardless of CFL number and true time step than explicit scheme and approximation of Jacobian matrix. The flow simulation around box in uniform flow with unstructured meshes is demonstrated to check the validity of the current formulation.

A new finite element formulation based on the relaxation type hereditary integral is presented for a time-domain analysis of isotropic, linear viscoelastic problems. The semi-discrete variational approximation and elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle are used in the theoretical development of the proposed method. In a time-stepping procedure of final, linear algebraic system equations, only a small additional computation for past history is required since the equivalent stiffness matrix is constant. The viscoelasticity matrices are derived and the stress computation algorithm is given in matrix form. The effect of time increment and Gauss point numbers on the numerical accuracy is examined. Two dimensional numerical examples of plane strain and plane stress are solved and compared with the analytical solutions to demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the present method.
The present study concentrates on the weak-scatterer hypothesis for the nonlinear wave-body interaction problems. In this method, the free surface boundary conditions are linearized on the incoming wave profile and the exact body motion is applied. The considered problems are the diffraction problem near a circular cylinder and the ship response in oblique waves. The numerical method of solution is a Rankine panel method. The Rankine panel method of this study adopts the higher-order B spline basis function for the approximation of physical variables. A modified Euler scheme is applied for the time stepping, which has neutral stability. The computational result shows some nonlinear behaviors of disturbance waves and wave forces. Moreover, the ship response shows very close results to experimental data.
The analytical approach for stability and response of iced conductor under uniform wind or turbulent wind is presented in this study. A nonlinear dynamic model is established to describe the motion of iced conductor galloping. In the case of uniform wind, the stability condition is derived by analyzing the eigenvalue associated with linearized matrix; The first order and second order approximation of galloping amplitude are obtained using multi-scale method. However, real wind has random characteristics essentially. To accurately evaluate the performance of the galloping iced conductor, turbulence wind should be described by random processes. In the case of turbulence wind, the Lyapunov exponent is conducted to judge the stability condition; The probability density of displacement is obtained by using the path integral method to predict galloping amplitude. An example is proposed to verify the effectiveness of the previous methods. It is shown that the fluctuating component of wind has little influence on the stability of iced conductor, but it can increase galloping amplitude. The analytical results on stability and response are also verified by numerical time stepping method.
