Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to study the optical and dielectric properties of three chalcogenide glasses: $Ge_{30}As_8Ga_2Se_{60}$, $Ge_{35}Ga_5Se_{60}$, and $Ge_{10}As_{20}S_{70}$. The absorption coefficients ${\alpha}({\nu})$, complex refractive index n(${\nu}$), and complex dielectric constants ${\varepsilon}({\nu})$ were measured in a frequency range from 0.3 THz to 1.5 THz. The measured real refractive indices were fitted using a Sellmeier equation. The results show that the Sellmeier equation fits well with the data throughout the frequency range and imply that the phonon modes of glasses vary with the glass compositions. The theory of far-infrared absorption in amorphous materials is used to analyze the results and to understand the differences in THz absorption among the sample glasses.
We report the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) of transdermal drug delivery in human skin. The time evolution of transdermal nicotine delivery in nicotine patches was assessed by detecting the transmission coefficient of sub-picosecond THz pulses and using a semi-analytic model based on the single-layer effective medium approximation. Using commercial nicotine patches (Nicoderm CQ®, 7 mg/24 h), THz transmission coefficients were measured to quantitatively analyze the cumulative amounts of nicotine released from the patches in the absence of their detailed specifications, including multilayer structures and optical properties at THz frequencies. The results agreed well with measurements by conventional in vitro and in vivo methods, using a diffusion cell with high-performance liquid chromatography and blood sampling respectively. Our study revealed the ability of the THz-TDS method to be an effective alternative to existing methods for noninvasive and label-free assessments of transdermal drug delivery, showing its high promise for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.
This research investigation employs a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy system to study the terahertz spectral characteristics of five different citrates in both solution and solid state. The citrates under examination are lithium citrate, monosodium citrate, disodium citrate, trisodium citrate, and potassium citrate. The results show that the THz absorption coefficients of the first four citrate solutions exhibit a decreasing trend with increasing concentration. However, the potassium citrate solution shows an opposite phenomenon. At the same time, the absorption coefficients of lithium citrate, trisodium citrate, and potassium citrate solutions are compared at the same concentration. The results indicate that the absorption coefficient of citrate solution increases in proportion to the increase of metal cation radius, which is explained from the perspective of the influence of metal cations on hydrogen bonds. In addition, we also study the absorption peaks of solid citrates, and characterize the formation mechanism of the absorption peaks by molecular dynamics simulations. This methodology can be further extended to the study of multitudinous salts, presenting theoretical foundations for the detection in food and medicine industries.
We present a method of using one-dimensional dielectric multilayer structures for designing terahertz frequency spreading filters. The interference of terahertz pulses in these structures composed of alternating weak and strong refractive materials allows design of well-separated THz frequency components within a modulation-limited THz spectral envelope. The design characteristics of these coarse THz combs are limited by the saturation effect and also by the deformation of the THz pulse time-traveling within the structure. The details of the designed THz waveform synthesis from these THz multilayer spectral filters are verified by experiments using time-domain terahertz pulsed spectroscopy.

The key science goal of the KMTNet Supernova Program (KSP) is to detect and study the early explosions of supernovae using one fifth of the KMTNet time. The BVI-band observations of the nearby target fields mostly closer than 30 Mpc distance and the follow-up spectroscopy provide valuable information on the early phase of the supernovae. These data can also be used for the studies of optical transients such as novae, dwarf novae, variable stars, and active galactic nuclei. Stacked images of several hundred images obtained from the time domain observations can be used for the search of low surface brightness galaxies reaching $28mag\;arcsec^{-2}$. Results and status of the KSP including ${\geq}20$ infant supernovae and ${\geq}100$ faint dwarf galaxies will be presented in this talk.
We performed time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to determine optical constants of highly conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) films. The CNT films have been fabricated on a flexible plastic substrate by using spin-coating or vacuum filtration. We found that the transmission of THz waves can be controlled by manipulating the thickness of the films and by post-treatments. From amplitude and phase information of the transmitted THz waves, we obtain optical constants such as refractive indices and dielectric constants of the CNT films. The frequency dependent dielectric constants show good metallic behaviors, relevant to the Drude free electron models with high plasma frequencies. It is also found that the dielectric constants are higher for the acid-treated films. Finally, the frequency dependent dielectric constants which are free from substrate effects have been demonstrated by using CNT films deposited on cellulose membranes.

In this paper we presented the detection of the explosive material RDX using a parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) THz time domain spectroscopy (TDS). Normally the explosive materials have been characterized through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Until now, most of all THz spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples where disorder effects contribute to line broadening such that individual resonances merge into relatively broad absorption features. In order to avoid such disadvantages we used the technique of PPWG THz-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of explosive material RDX. The PPWG THz-TDS used in this work well established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. The explosive material was analyzed as powder layers in $112{\mu}m$ gap of metal PPWG. The thin later mass was estimated to be about $700{\mu}g$. Finally, we showed spectra of explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 THz measured using PPWG THz-TDS.
Microfluidic chips are new devices that can manipulate liquids at the micrometer level, and terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy has good applicability in biochemical detection. The combination of these two technologies can shorten the distance between sample and THz wave, reduce THz wave absorption by water, and more effectively analyze the kinetics of biochemical reactions in aqueous solutions. This study investigates the effects of different external magnetic field intensities on the THz transmission characteristics of deionized water, CuSO4, CuCl2, (CH3COO)2Cu, Na2SO4, NaCl, and CH3COONa; the THz spectral intensity of the sample solutions decrease with increasing intensity of the applied magnetic field. Analysis shows that the magnetic field leads to a change in the dipole moment of water molecules in water and electrolyte solutions, which enhances not only the hydrogen-bond networking ability of water but also the hydration around ions in electrolyte solutions, increasing the number of hydrogen bonds. Increasing the intensity of this magnetic field further promotes the hydrogen-bond association between water molecules, weakening the THz transmission intensity of the solution.
Human melanocortin-4 receptor (hMC4R) has a critical role in part of energy homeostasis, and their heterozygous mutations related in genetic cause of severe human obesity. In order to study the structure and function of these membrane proteins, it is important to prepare the samples. However, the preparation of transmembrane peptide is seriously difficult and time-consuming. Overexpression and purification of membrane proteins was reported to be difficult due to their innate insoluble and toxic properties. Among the many difficulties, the most important is the difficulty in obtaining sufficient quantities of purified protein. Recently, we succeed to produce large amounts of the second transmembrane domain from the wild-type hMC4R (wt-TM2) and D90N mutant hMC4R (m-TM2) and proposed the structural difference of them in membrane-like environments. In this paper, we demonstrate the optimization procedures to express and purify wt-TM2 or m-TM2 peptides, and solution NMR studies in different detergents to get high-resolution spectra were also described.
We extended the measurable time scale of DNA dynamics to submicrosecond using a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex, $[Ru(phen)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuPD), which displays a mean lifetime near 350 ns. We partially characterized the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in calf thymus DNA from RuPD to nile blue (NB) using frequency-domain fluorometry with a high-intensity, blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. There was a significant overlap of the emission spectrum of the donor RuPD with the absorption spectrum of the acceptor NB. The F$\ddot{o}$rster distance ($R_0$) that was calculated from the spectral overlap was $33.4\;{\AA}$. We observed dramatic decreases in the steady-state fluorescence intensities of RuPD when the NB concentration was increased. The intensity decays of RuPD were matched the closest by a triple exponential decay. The mean decay time of RuPD in the absence of the acceptor NB was 350.7 ns. In a concentration-dependent manner, RuPD showed rapid intensity decay times upon adding NB. The mean decay time decreased to 184.6 ns at $100\;{\mu}M$ NB. The FRET efficiency values that are calculated from the mean decay times increased from 0.107 at $20\;{\mu}M$ NB to 0.474 at $100\;{\mu}M$ NB concentration. The use of FRET with a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex donor is expected to offer the opportunity to increase the information about the structure and dynamics of nucleic acids.
