This study is concerned with criterion for membrane to shell conversion in two-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis using membrane/shell mixed element. It is well known that in the sheet metal forming some parts of the sheet deform under almost pure stretching (membrane) conditions, whereas other parts in contact with sharp tooling surfaces can develop significant bending strains. The membrane analysis has a short computational time however, in the membrane analysis the bending effects can not be condidered at all. On the other hand, the shell analysis allows the consideration of bending effects, but involves too much computational time. So Onatel),2), Yang et al3),4) developed the membrane/shell mixed element. Onate introduced the energy ratio parameter and Yang et al introduced the ratio of thickness to radius of curvature as the criterion. In the present study we propose a new criterion by using the angle between both side elements in the nodal point.

One of the most important factor to be considered for the analysis of sheet metal forming processes is the tool surface description for arbitrarily- shaped sheet metal parts. In the present study , finite element approach is used to describe the arbitrarily shaped tool surface. In finite element mesh approach, tool surfaces ar, described by finite elements. The finite elements mesh description of the tool surface, which is originally described by CAD data, needs much time and time-consuming graphic operation. The method, however, has been widely used to describe a complex tool surface. In the present study, the contact searching algorithm for the finite element mesh approach is developed based on cell strategy method and sheet surface normal scheme. For the verification purpose, a clover cup drawing, Baden-Baden oilpan problem and a trunk floor drawing were investigated. The computational results based on the finite element approach were compared with the results of available parametric patch approach and experiments.
The plastic hinge method and the plastic zone method are extensively adopted in displacement-based elements and force-based elements respectively for second-order inelastic analysis. The former enhances the computational efficiency with relatively less accurate results while the latter precisely predicts the structural behavior but generally requires more computer time. The displacement-based elements receive criticism mainly on plasticity dominated problems not only in accuracy but also in longer computer time to redistribute the forces due to formation of plastic hinges. The multi-element-per-member model relieves this problem to some extent but will induce a new problem in modeling of member initial imperfections required in design codes for direct analysis. On the contrary, a force-based element with several integration points is sufficient for material yielding. However, use of more integration points or elements associated with fiber section reduces computational efficiency. In this paper, a new force-based element equipped with stress-resultant plasticity model with minimal computational cost is proposed for second-order inelastic analysis. This element is able to take the member initial bowing into account such that one-element-per-member model is adequate and complied with the codified requirements of direct analysis. This innovative solution is new and practical for routine design. Finally, several examples demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.

Deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section is different with that for axisymmetric circular one. Therefore deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section requires several intermediate steps to generate the final configuration without any significant defect. In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process for high precision rectangular cases is carried out especially for an extreme aspect ratio. The analysis is performed using rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme of the commercial program, LS-DYNA3D. The sheet blank is modeled using eight-node continuum brick elements. The results of analysis show that the irregular contact condition between blank and die affects the occurrence of failure, and the difference of aspect ratio in the drawn section leads to non-uniform metal flow, which may cause failure. A series of experiments for multi-stage deep drawing process for the rectangular cases are conducted, and the deformation configuration and the thickness distribution of the drawn rectangular cases are investigated by comparing with the results of the numerical analysis. The numerical analysis with an explicit time integration scheme shows good agreement with the experimental observation.
Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.
An accurate and highly efficient inverse element labelled iPCB is developed based on the inverse finite element method (iFEM) for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures (such as arch bridges) utilizing onboard strain data. This inverse problem, named shape sensing, is vital for the design of smart structures and structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures. The iPCB formulation is defined based on a least-squares variational principle that employs curved Timoshenko beam theory as its baseline. The accurate strain-displacement relationship considering tension-bending coupling is used to establish theoretical and measured section strains. The displacement fields of the isoparametric element iPCB are interpolated utilizing nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) basis functions, enabling exact geometric modelling even with a very coarse mesh density. The present formulation is completely free from membrane and shear locking. Numerical validation examples for different curved structures subjected to different loading conditions have been performed and have demonstrated the excellent prediction capability of iPCBs. The present formulation has also been shown to be practical and robust since relatively accurate predictions can be obtained even omitting the shear deformation contributions and considering polluted strain measures. The current element offers a promising tool for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures.

A real-time hybrid test of a 3 story-3 bay reinforced concrete frame which is divided into numerical and physical substructure models under uniaxial earthquake excitation was run using a fixed iteration implicit HHT time integration method. The first story inner non-ductile column was selected as the physical substructure model, and uniaxial earthquake excitation was applied to the numerical model until the specimen failed due to severe damage. A finite-element analysis program, Mercury, was newly developed and optimized for a real-time hybrid test. The drift ratio based on the top horizontal displacement of the physical substructure model was compared with the result of a numerical simulation by OpenSees and the result of a shaking table test. The experiment in this paper is one of the most complex real-time hybrid tests, and the description of the hardware, algorithm and models is presented in detail. If there is an improvement in the numerical model, the evaluation of the tangent stiffness matrix of the physical substructure model in the finite element analysis program and better software to reduce the computational time of the element state determination for the force-based beam-column element, then the comparison with the results of the real-time hybrid test and the shaking table test deserves to make a recommendation. In addition, for the goal of a "Numerical simulation of the complex structures under dynamic loading", the real time hybrid test has enough merit as an alternative to dynamic experiments of large and complex structures.
In order to execute efficiently the free vibration analysis of 2-dimensional structures like plate structures, the author developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method. This method is based on the combination of the modeling techniques in the FEM and the transfer technique of the stiffness coefficient in the transfer stiffness coefficient method. Numerical results of the simply supported and the elastic supported rectangular plates showed that the present method can be successfully applied to the free vibration analysis of plate structures on a personal computer. We confirmed that, in the case of analyzing the free vibration of rectangular plate structures, the present method is superior to the FEM from the viewpoint of computation time and storage.
An improved finite element-transfer matrix method is applied to the transient analysis of plates with large displacement under various excitations. In the present method, the transfer of state vectors from left to right in a combined finite element-transfer matrix method is changed into the transfer of generally incremental stiffness equations of every section from left to right. Furthermore, in this method, the propagation of round-off errors occurring in recursive multiplications of transfer and point matrices is avoided. The Newmark-${\beta}$ method is employed for time integration and the modified Newton-Raphson method for equilibrium iteration in each time step. An ITNONDL-W program based on this method using the IBM-PC/AT microcomputer is developed. Finally numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy as well as the potential of the proposed method for dynamic large deflection analysis of plates with random boundaries under various excitations.

A rigid visco-plastic finite element method has been developed for modeling superplastic forming processes. The optimum pressure-time relationship for a target strain rate and thickness distributions was predicted using two-node line element based on membrane approximation for plane strain and axisymmetric condition. Analysis of superplastic forming was carried out using the developed program and the numerical results were compared to the values available in the literature for plane strain problems. For description of the contact between the dies and sheet, the direct projection method was applied to the complicated problem and the validity of the scheme was tested. Experiments for the various geometries such as hemisphere and cone were performed with the developed forming machine using the calculated optimum pressure-time curves. Comparison between analysis and experiments showed good agreement.
