  • The behavior characteristics of the saltwater intrusion in the Seomjin River Estuary by the inflow of fresh water were analysed by the field observation using CTD in the neap tide in January, June, and August 2013 as well as a numerical model, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). As a result, Seomjin River Estuary is found that the saltwater intrusion is sensitive to the tide and tidal and freshwater flow. The results of field observation and numerical model were similar in the range of salt, but the results of salt wedge distribution were quite different. The observation of tide and tidal current as well as hydrographic surveying the Seomjin River Estuary will be jointly conducted for the accurate analysis.

  • Simultaneous tidal current observation at five or seven stations on the channel near Incheon Habour was conducted at neap, mean and spring tides during the period of August 16 to August 27, 1976 and the characteristic of tidal currents with each tide was studied by the analysis of these data. Times of slack refer to the times of high and low waters at neap, mean and spring tides seem to be small. Times of maximum current refer to the times of high and low waters at the mean tide tends to appear earlier than that of the neap tide and later than that of the spring tide. The velocity ratio of maximum ebb current to maximum flood current at the mean tide has larger value than that of neap tide and has smaller value than that of spring tide. The current velocity ratio of spring tide to neap tide and to mean tide are approximately 1.8 and 1.3, respectively.

  • The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam, during next year. and extensive coastal engineering research works have been carried out. In this paper we describes some observation results of the tide and tidal current. as well as modeling work in order to investigate the tide and tidal current regime change in relation to the tidal current power plant (TCPP) construction. The special modeling skill in order to consider the turbine operation in the TCPP is developed and applied to the estimation for the flow regime change by the simple layout of the tidal current power plant.

  • New cotidal charts of the Tusima Strait has been edited by ODAMAKI (1989a) using tidal current observation data. For the semidiurnal tide as shown in Fig.1, two distinctive features are detected. One is an anti-amphidromic area located in the south coast of Korea. Another is the amplitude gap between west and east coasts of the Tusima.(omitted)

  • Through spot-investigation and observation of water quality environment of Jinhae Bay, this conducts the sea movement simulation on the current water quality of Jinhae Bay, grasps the flowing characteristics of Jinhae Bay and carries out ocean pollution simulation by using the data collected. Sea movement simulation results are tested by using Ocean Investigation Bureau's data of tide and current, and are also used in the ocean pollution spreading simulation. Water quality spreading simulation is conducted by using the data of sea movement and data of observation and then the results are compared with data of spot investigation. COD condensity is calculated and the water quality characteristics of Jinhae Bay are grasped.

  • In this study, a computed tide of a real tide was introduced to improve the numerical solutions for tides and tidal flow simulations. The real tide was defined considering the nodal modulation amplitude, phase correction factor, astronomical argument, and tidal harmonic constants of all the constituents. The numerical simulation was performed using the real tide parameters for the west-south coastal waters of Korea, where the observation data for tides, tidal currents, waves, and winds over two seasons exist. The tidal flow simulation of the real tide was simulated successfully. The correlation coefficient between the observed and calculated values was 1.0, which indicated both accurate amplitude and phase. The U- and V-components of the tidal current obtained for the real tide had average valid correlations of 0.83 and 0.936, respectively. The speed error for the residual current was 0.006 m/s on the average, which indicated an insignificant difference, and the directional behavior of the residual current was very similar. In addition, the velocity error was attributed to various weather effects, such as high waves and wind storms. Therefore, this model is expected to improve current solutions provided that weathering forces, such as waves and winds, are considered.

  • Until 2016, before discussions on the restoration of brackish water of the Nakdong River Estuary started in earnest, the downstream water level was predicted using the data of existing tide level observatories (Busan and Gadeokdo) several kilometers away from the estuary. However, it was not easy to carry out the prediction due to the dif erence in tide level and phase. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate tide prediction more accurately through tidal harmonic analysis using the measured water level affected by the tides in the offshore waters adjacent to the Nakdong River Estuary. As a research method, the storage status of observation data according to the period and abnormal data were checked at 10-minute intervals in the offshore sea area near the Nakdong River Estuary bank, and the observed and predicted tides were measured using TASK2000 (Tidal Analysis Software Kit) Package, a tidal harmonic analysis program. Regression analysis based on one-to-one comparison showed that the correlation between the two components was high correlation coef icient 0.9334. In predicting the tides for the current year, if possible, more accurate data can be obtained by harmonically analyzing one-year tide observation data from the previous year and performing tide prediction using the obtained harmonic constant. Based on this method, the predicted tide for 2022 was generated and it is being used in the calculation of seawater inflow for the restoration of brackish water of the Nakdong River Estuary.

  • Semi-diurnal internal tides and near-inertial waves are investigated using moored current meter measurements at four sites along the shelf break of the East China Sea during August 1987 and May-June 1988. Each mooring is equipped with four current meters spanning from near surface to near bottom. Spectral analyses of all current data reveal dominant spectra at the semi-diurnal frequency band, where the upper and lower current measurements show out-of-phase relationship between them with significant coherences. These are consistent with typical characteristics of the first-mode semi-diurnal internal tide. Strong intensification of the near-bottom baroclinic currents is observed only at one site, where the ratio of the bottom slope to the slope of the internal-wave characteristics at the semi-diurnal frequency is close to unity. An energetic near-inertial wave event is observed during the first half of May-June 1988 observation at two mooring sites. Rotary spectra reveal that the most dominant signal is clockwise rotating motion at the near-inertial frequency band. Upward phase and downward energy propagations, shown in time-depth contour plots of near-inertial bandpass filtered currents, are confirmed by cross correlations between the upper- and lower-layer current measurements. The upward-propagating phase speed is estimated to be about 0.13 cm $s^{-1}$ at both sites. Significant coherences and in-phase relationships of near-inertial currents at the same or similar depths between the two sites are observed in spite of their long distance of about 110 km.
