The cause of abnormal tidal residuals was examined by analyzing sea levels, sea surface atmospheric pressures, winds at ten tide stations, and current, measured at the coast of the Yellow Sea from the night of November $24^{th}$ to the morning of the $25^{th}$ in 2013, along with weather chart. Additionally, the cross-correlations among the measured data were also examined. The 'abnormal tidal residuals' mentioned in this study refer to differences between maximum and minium tidal residuals. The largest abnormal tidal residual was identified to be a difference of 176 cm occurring over 4 hours and 1 minute at YeongJongDo (YJD) with a maximum tidal residual of 111 cm and minimum of -65 cm. The smallest abnormal tidal residual was 68 cm at MoSeulPo (MSP) during 8 hours 52 minutes. The cause of these abnormal tidal residuals was not a meteo-tsunami generated by an atmospheric pressure jump but wind generated by the pressure patterns. The flow speed due to these abnormal tidal residuals as measured at ten tide stations was not negligible, representing 16 ~ 41 % of the annual average ebb current speed. From the cross correlation among the tidal residuals, winds, and tidal residual currents, we learned the northern flow, due to southerly winds, raised the sea level at Incheon when a low pressure center located on the left side of the Korean Peninsula. After passing the Korean Peninsula, a southern flow due to northerly winds decreased the sea level.

Tidal residual is being an important factor by the influence of the climate change in terms of the coastal safety and defense. It is one of the most important factor for the determination of the reference sea level in order to check the safety and performance of the coastal structures in company with the typhoon intensity variation. The probability density function (pdf) of tidal residuals in the Korean coasts have a non-ignorable skewness and high kurtosis. It is highly restricted to the application of the normal pdf assumption as an approximated pdf of tidal residuals. In this study, the pdf of tidal residuals estimated using the Kernel function is suggested as a more reliable and accurate pdf of tidal residuals than the normal function. This suggested pdf shows a good agreement with the empirical cumulative distribution function and histogram. It also gives the more accurate estimation result on the extreme values in comparison with the results based on the normal pdf assumption.

Fourier analysis and a wavelet method were carried out to elucidate the characteristics of tidal residual components in coastal waters. The result of Fourier analysis shows tide-induced and monsoon-induced residuals are conspicuous at the short period and mid period, respectively. The tidal residuals were decomposed by period from 3 hours to 8 months and the characteristics of their components were shown by reconstituting them with short periods less than 24 hours, mid-periods between 1 day and 16 days and long periods longer than 1 month. The tidal residuals in the short period, i.e., tide-induced components, being based on the tidal elevation prediction errors, appear in the West Sea with high tidal ranges and do not have much seasonal fluctuation. Additionally, the period of typhoon induced surge ranges more or less than 12 hours. The mid-period components were clearly generated mainly in the West Sea during the winter and largely affected by monsoon. Accordingly, the pure surge height components were concentrated on the mid-period and had clear features for each coastal waters. The long period components show similar characteristics at all stations and are considered to stem from variations of mean sea levels.

Due to tidal force, it is very difficult to estimate the hydraulic parameters of high permeable aquifer near coastal area in Jeju Island. Therefore, to eliminate the impact of tidal force from groundwater level and estimate the hydraulic properties, tidal response technique has been mainly studied. In this study we have extracted 38 tidal constituents from groundwater level and harmonic constants including frequency, amplitude, and phase of each constituent using T_TIDE subroutine which is used to estimate oceanic tidal constituents, and then we have estimated hydraulic diffusivity associated with amplitude attenuation factor(that is the ratio of groundwater level amplitude to sea level amplitude for each tidal constituent) and phase lag(that is phase difference between groundwater level and sea level for each constituent). Also using harmonic constants for each constituent, we made the sinusoidal wave and then we constructed the synthesized wave which linearly combined sinusoidal wave. Finally, we could get residuals(net groundwater level) which was excluded most of tidal influences by eliminating synthesized wave from raw groundwater level. As a result of comparing statistics for synthesized level and net groundwater level, we found that the statistics for net groundwater level was more insignificant than those of synthesized wave. Moreover, in case of coastal aquifer which the impact of tidal force is even more than those of other environmental factors such as rainfall and groundwater yield, it is possible to predict groundwater level using synthesized wave and regression analysis of residuals.

The fact that tidal residuals are detected greatly at the tide-dominated region implies that tide component has still remained in the tidal residual. Auto-correlation function analysis also show that the auto-correlation coefficients are conspicuous near tidal periods at the Western Coast. A wavelet method was used to analyze characteristics of the short period or tide-relevant residuals. Considering the results that tidal period is prominent at the tide-dominated region, that seasonal variation is trivial at the short periods, and that shallow tidal period is conspicuous at Mokpo, the short period can be considered to be correlated with tide modulated surge. The result also shows short period components stem mainly from tide-forecasting error and tide-surge interaction. Thus tide modulated surge must be distinguished from meteorological surge.

The objective of this paper is to propose a methodology for surface sediments classification in tidal flats that can combine ground survey data with high-resolution remote sensing data by multivariate kriging. Unlike conventional methodologies that have classified remote sensing data by using pre-classified sediment components, a new classification methodology presented in this paper first generates sediment component fraction maps and then classifies the sediments on a final stage. For generating sediment component fractions, regression kriging, as one of multivariate kriging algorithms, is applied to integrate ground survey data and remote sensing data. First, trend components of sand, silt, and clay are derived through regression analysis of ground survey data and spectral information from remote sensing data. Then, residuals at sample locations are computed and interpolated to generate residual components in the study area. Finally, the sediment component fractions are computed by adding the residuals to the trend components and are classified on a final stage. A case study at the Baramarae tidal flats with KOMPSAT-2 imagery is carried out to evaluate the classification capability of the proposed classification methodology. Through the case study, the proposed methodology showed the best classification accuracy, compared with the conventional classification methodologies. Especially, much improvement of classification accuracy for fine-grained sediments were also obtained. Therefore, it is expected that the presented classification methodology would be an effective one for surface sediments classification in tidal flats.

EOF analysis of tidal residual derived from 2003~2009 tide data was used to identify the spatio-temporal variability. The effect of sea surface air pressures and winds on the tidal residual was also investigated by the correlation analysis. The first mode accounting for 68 % of the total variance represented concurrent sea level rise or fall, and the second mode accounting for 21 % of the total variance explained alternative sea level rise and fall between West Sea coast and both South Sea and East Sea coasts. While northerly and southerly winds dominated the tidal residual in the eastern coast of Yellow Sea, the effect of sea surface air pressures on the tidal residual increased along the coastal regions from South Sea to East Sea.
In this study, we determined the precise coordinates of TBMs (Tidal Bench Marks), which used as the national reference points in coastal area of Korea, using a GPS data analysis SW for the academic and scientific applications, GAMIT/GLOBK. For accurate 3-D positioning of TBM locations, we performed the GPS point surveying according to the national surveying policy and also acquired the GPS data for 48 TBMs located in the western and southern coastal part of Korea. Considering the results of baseline analysis to each observation session obtained from GAMIT module, the baseline analysis was realized to be done precisely because the values of Normalized RMS (NRMS) were mostly less than ${\pm}0.20mm$. Before the network adjustment using GLOBK module, we evaluated the suitability of observations for each session by applying the chi-squared test (${\chi}^2$ test) to the degree of freedom in observed session. An overall distributions of ${\chi}^2$ test were less than 1.0 for all sessions, and the statistical of ${\chi}^2$ test showed the average, 0.267 with minimum and maximum value, 0.063 and 0.653, respectively. Finally, we analyzed the network adjustment for 48 TBMs to reduce the residuals of baseline analysis on each point by connecting with 42 permanent GPS stations in Korea. In the network adjustment procedure, we set up the weighted values of each permanent station to be allocated between 0.9 and 1.14, and also removed the observed points having residual exceeds 4-times of standard deviation ($4{\sigma}$).
We present the absolute properties of the double-lined eclipsing binary KIC 6206751 exhibiting multiperiodic pulsations. The Kepler light curve of this system was simultaneously solved with the previously published radial-velocity data. The results indicate that the binary star is a short-period semi-detached system with fundamental parameters of $M_1=1.66{\pm}0.04M_{\odot}$, $M_2=0.215{\pm}0.006M_{\odot}$, $R_1=1.53{\pm}0.02R_{\odot}$, $R_2=1.33{\pm}0.02R_{\odot}$, $L_1=5.0{\pm}0.6L_{\odot}$, and $L_2=0.96{\pm}0.09L_{\odot}$. We applied multiple frequency analyses to the eclipse-subtracted light residuals and detected the 42 frequencies below $2.5days^{-1}$. Among these, three independent frequencies of $f_2$, $f_3$, and $f_4$ can be identified as high-order ($38{\leq}n{\leq}40$) low-degree (l=2) gravity-mode oscillations, whereas the other frequencies may be orbital harmonics and combination terms. The ratios between the orbital frequency and the pulsation frequencies are $f_{orb}:f_{2-4}{\simeq}2:3$, which implies that the ${\gamma}$ Dor pulsations of the detached primary star may be excited by the tidal interaction of the secondary companion. The short orbital period, and the low mass ratio and $M_2$ demonstrate that KIC 6206751 is an R CMa-type star, which is most likely evolving into an EL CVn star. Of seven well-studied R CMa-type stars, our program target is the only eclipsing binary with a ${\gamma}$ Dor pulsating component.
