Ocean environmental data such as tide, wind, significant wave height etc. along the expected route were collected and analyzed to secure the safe towing and installation of floating pendulum wave energy converter(FPWEC) at planned sea area. Data from Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) were reviewed and those were used to estimate the external forces exerting on the FPWEC during the towing operation. ANSYS system was used for the structural analysis of the FPWEC which is subject to complex environmental load to confirm the safety.

A small-scale horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine is designed, manufactured and studied both experimentally and numerically in this study. The turbine is expected to work in most of China's sea areas where the ocean current velocity is low and to supply electricity for remote islands. To improve the efficiency of the turbine at low flow velocities, a magnetic coupling is used for the non-contacting transmission of the rotor torque. A prototype is manufactured and tested in a towing tank. The experimental results show that the turbine is characterized by a cut-in velocity of 0.25 m/s and a maximum power coefficient of 0.33, proving the feasibility of using magnetic couplings to reduce the resistive torque in the transmission parts. Three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, which are based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, are then performed to evaluate the performance of the rotor both at transient and steady state.
Background: Firefighters are required to use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which impairs ventilatory mechanics. We hypothesized that firefighters have elevated arterial $CO_2$ when using SCBA. Methods: Firefighters and controls performed a maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer and two graded exercise tests (GXTs) at 25%, 50%, and 70% of their maximal aerobic power, once with a SCBA facemask and once with protective clothing and full SCBA. Results: Respiratory rate increased more in controls than firefighters. Heart rate increased as a function of oxygen consumption ($V_{O_2}$) more in controls than firefighters. End-tidal $CO_2$ ($ETCO_2$) during the GXTs was not affected by work rate in either group for either condition but was higher in firefighters at all work rates in both GXTs. SCBA increased $ETCO_2$ in controls but not firefighters. Conclusions: The present study showed that when compared to controls, firefighters' hypoventilate during a maximal test and GXT. The hypoventilation resulted in increased $ETCO_2$, and presumably increased arterial $CO_2$, during exertion. It is proposed that firefighters have altered $CO_2$ sensitivity due to voluntary hypoventilation during training and work. Confirmation of low $CO_2$ sensitivity and the consequence of this on performance and long-term health remain to be determined.

This study presents a novel monitoring technique for underwater high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables based on the Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS). The proposed technique utilizes vibration and acoustic signals generated on HVDC cables to monitor their condition and detect events such as earthquakes, shipments, tidal currents, and construction activities. To implement the monitoring system, a DAS based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) system was designed, fabricated, and validated for performance. For the HVDC cable monitoring experiments, a testbed was constructed on land, mimicking the cable burial method and protective equipment used underwater. Defined various scenarios that could cause cable damage and conducted experiments accordingly. The developed DAS system achieved a maximum measurement distance of 50 km, a distance measurement interval of 2 m, and a measurement repetition rate of 1 kHz. Extensive experiments conducted on HVDC cables and protective facilities demonstrated the practical potential of the DAS system for monitoring underwater and underground areas.

A voltage measuring system specified for the voltage fluctuation of the Pusan-Hamada submarine cable is developed by adding circuits of differential amplification and analog-to-digital conversion to a microprocessor-based data logger with a data modem. This system is charaterized by its small size. no power failure. fully unmanned operation. and precise instrumental drift correction. In addition to the cable voltage and current it measures an ambient temperature and a mercury cell voltage in order to calibrate temperature effect and check its long-term stability. The data acquired by this system show that the voltage signal. comprising fast random noises with a constant width of about 0.2V. fluctuates within a range of about 1V and the fluctuation frequency is similar to that of tidal motion. The source voltage of power feeding equipment (PFE) for the cable system seems to be affected when the room temperature changes rapidly.

The experimental study for the performances of 100 kW marine current turbines (Horizontal Axis Turbine) has been conducted with three cases of 700 mm diameter model in PNU 100 m towing tank. Three cases of impeller have been designed according to the variation of section configuration and tip shape. The model tests have been carried out at different speed of revolution to find out the scale effect (Reynolds number effect). The designed rake impeller was the best among them in the efficiency point of view especially at high Tip Speed Ratio (TSR). The present study is expected to be extended to conduct at high reynolds number as well as the computational study for the validation.

When typhoon approaches, ship normally drops her anchor at proper anchorage for sheltering. If an anchoring ship is under the influence of typhoon, she can keep her position when the external force and counter force is balanced. Where, external force is induced by wind, wave and tidal currents while counter force is induced by holding power of anchor/chain and thrust force of main engine. In this study, authors presented a method to analyze theoretically the limit of external force for the ship to keep her position without being dragged and, to check the validity of method, applied this to the ship which had been anchored in Jinhae Bay when the typhoon MAEMI passed on September 2003.

Due to the good corrosion resistance and machinability, copper alloy is commonly employed for shipbuilding, hydroelectric power and tidal power industries. The Cu alloy, however, has poor durability, and the seawater application at fast flow condition becomes vulnerable to cavitation damage leading to economic loss and risking safety. The HVOF(High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) thermal spray coating with WC-10Co4Cr were therefore introduced as a replacement for chromium or ceramic to minimize the cavitation damage and secure durablility under high-velocity and high-pressure fluid flow. Cavitation test was conducted in seawater at $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ with an amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ on HVOF WC-10Co4Cr coatings produced by thermal spray. The cavitation at $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ exposed the substrate in 12.5 hours and in 10 hours, respectively. Starting from 5 hours of cavitation, the coating layer continued to show damage by higher than 160% over time when the temperature of seawater was elevated from $15^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$. Under cavitation environment, although WC-10Co4Cr has good wear resistance and durability, increase in temperature may accelerate the damage rate of the coating layer mainly due to cavitation damage.

Time series analysis was conducted to identify the factors affecting short-term variation of water temperature in Wando. Spectrum analysis showed that air temperature peaks at diurnal period, while water temperature and tide level peak at both semi-diurnal and diurnal periods. Coherence between water temperature and the tide level presented 0.92 at semi-diurnal period. Numerical experiment were carried out to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of water temperature in the study area. Average water temperature difference between maximum ebb and flood was $0.3^{\circ}C$ in spring tide, but $0.13^{\circ}C$ in neap tide. The reason for the large difference in spring tide is that relatively cold water entered with strong tidal currents at flood tide and flowed out at ebb tide. Water temperature on coasts was higher than out at sea. This is because the depth in the coast is shallower than at sea, and water temperature increases rapidly due to solar radiation.
