This is a preliminary study of the feasibility of obtaining reliable tidal current harmonic constants, using one month of current observations, to verify the accuracy of a tidal model. An inference method is commonly used to separate out the tidal harmonic constituents when the available data spans less than a synodic period. In contrast to tidal constituents, studies of the separation of tidal-current harmonics are rare, basically due to a dearth of the long-term observation data needed for such experiments. We conducted concurrent and monthly harmonic analyses for tidal current velocities and heights, using 2 years (2006 and 2007) of current and sea-level records obtained from the Tidal Current Signal Station located in the narrow waterway in front of Incheon Lock, Korea. Firstly, the l-year harmonic analyses showed that, with the exception of $M_2$ and $S_2$ semidiurnal constituents, the major constituents were different for the tidal currents and heights. $K_1$, for instance, was found to be the 4th major tidal constituent but not an important tidal current constituent. Secondly, we examined monthly variation in the amplitudes and phase-lags of the $S_2$ and $K_1$ current-velocity and tide constituents over a 23-month period. The resultant patterns of variation in the amplitudes and phase-lags of the $S_2$ tidal currents and tides were similar, exhibiting a sine curve form with a 6-month period. Similarly, variation in the $K_1$ tidal constant and tidal current-velocity phase lags showed a sine curve pattern with a 6-month period. However, that of the $K_1$ tidal current-velocity amplitude showed a somewhat irregular sine curve pattern. Lastly, we investigated and tested the inference methods available for separating the $K_2$ and $S_2$ current-velocity constituents via monthly harmonic analysis. We compared the effects of reduction in monthly variability in tidal harmonic constants of the $S_2$ current-velocity constituent using three different inference methods and that of Schureman (1976). Specifically, to separate out the two constituents ($S_2$ and $K_2$), we used three different inference parameter (i.e. amplitude ratio and phase-lag diggerence) values derived from the 1-year harmonic analyses of current-velocities and tidal heights at (near) the short-term observation station and from tidal potential (TP), together with Schureman's (1976) inference (SI). Results from these four different methods reveal that TP and SI are satisfactorily applicable where results of long-term harmonic analysis are not available. We also discussed how to further reduce the monthly variability in $S_2$ tidal current-velocity constants.

Tidal flats provide important indicators that inform the condition of the environment, so we need to monitor them systematically. Currently, the projects to monitor tidal flats by periodically observing the creatures in tidal flats are underway. Still, it is done in a way that people observe directly, so it is not systematic and efficient. In this paper, we propose a background modeling method for tidal flat images that can be applied to a system that automatically monitors creatures living in tidal flats using sensor network technology. The application of sensor network technology makes it difficult to collect enough images due to the limitation of transmission capacity. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method to effectively model the background and generate foreground maps by reflecting the characteristics of tidal flat images in the situation where the number of images to be used for analysis is small. Experimental results show that the proposed method models the background of a tidal flat image easily and accurately.

Many efforts will have to be made on securing the stable supply of the energy due to the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization fossil fuels inducing global climate change. Renewable portfolio standard enforced to power companies over 500 MW capacity from 2012. Tidal current energy is one of the most interesting renewable and clean energy resources that have been less exploited. Especially, Korea has worldwide outstanding tidal current energy resources and it is highly required to develop a tidal current energy conversion system(TECS) in coastal region. So, we examine a tidal in-stream energy using a numerical model and estimate a tidal current potential for commercialization of tidal current power plant in the sea of the Bunamgun-do. Available tidal energy resources is also analytically estimated using a tidal farm method and the annual energy production of an optimal TECS arrays will be calculated with taking into account interference of lateral and longitudinal spacing.

This study was performed in order to produce the basic data for developing prediction techniques of desalinization to be applicable to reclaimed tidal lands at the beginning stage. the desalinization experiments were carried out by two water management practices, namely, the leaching method by subsurface drainage and the rinsing method by surface drainage. The 5 soil samples used in this study were collected in 4 tidal land reclamation projects. Regression equations were obtained in order to investigate the changes of electrical conductivity during the desalinization of reclaimed tidal lands and to estimate water requirements for desalinization. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: 1. According to USDA Salinity Laboratory classification system of salt affected soils the reclaimed tidal land soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils with the high electrical conductivity and the high exchangeable sodium percentage. 2. With the increase of the water requirements for desalinization the electrical conductivity was decreased with high degree of correlationships and the desalinization effects were remakable in both the leaching method and the rinsing method. 3. In case of the leaching method the electrical conductivity had been reduced below the classification value of salt affected soils when the depth o water leached per unit depth of soil (Dwl/Ds) was 0.3 and the desalinization effects showed a tendency to be much the same in each treatment.

Because of its predictability of the energy cycle and huge scale power output, the ocean energy from tidal power utilization has always received attention as a great energy source, even though its development cost, including the embankment construction, is so much higher than that of any other energy source. Nevertheless, nowadays many projects are being planned on account of institutional support from the government and the recent advance of construction technology. In Korea, the new industry field operating and managing the tidal power plant has already opened. But we are facing a number of problems for optimal operation of tidal power plant that are a lack of operation experience and a skill of professional management and others. This paper suggests a novel way to determine the starting head of power generation by generating power comparison method For this new method, the paper discusses many factors including changing the volume of the basin, the number of operating turbines and gates and forecasting the tidal amplitude and the characteristic curve of turbine and gate. Finally we verified that it can increase about 2% an annual power generation compared with the conventional method using the original operational function made in the plant design process.
Microphytobenthos bloom from late January to early March in Korean tidal flats. KOMPSAT-2 will provide multi-spectral images with a spatial resolution of 4 m comparable with IKONOS. Using IKONOS and Landsat data, algal mat detection was tested in the Saemangeum area~ Micro-benthic diatoms are abundant and a major primary product in the tidal flats. A linear spectral unmixing (LSU) method was applied to the test data. LSU was effective to detect algal mat and the classified algal mat fraction well correlated with NDVI image. Fine grained upper tidal flats are generally known to be the best environment for algal mat. Algal mat thriving in coarse grained lower tidal flats as well as upper tidal flats were reported in this study. A high resolution multi-spectral sensor in KOMPSAT-2 will provide useful data for long-term monitoring of microphytobenthos in tidal flats.
The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is famous for its large tidal range (up to 9 m) and vast tidal flats. With comparison the sedimentary environments of open and close tidal flat using remote sensing, we select Kanghwa tidal flat and Hwang-Do tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay. Prior to surface sediment discrimination using remote sensing, sedimentary environments including intertidal OEM, hydraulic condition, and relationship between grain size and various tidal condition are investigated. Remote sensing has the potential to provide synoptic information of intertidal environments. The objectives of this study are: (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (OEM) using the waterline method of Lansat TM/ETM+, (ii) to investigate the tidal channel distribution using texture analysis, and (iii) to analyze the relationship between surface grain size by using in-situ data and intertidal OEM and tidal channel density by using high-resolution satellite data such as IKONOS and Kompsat EOC. The results demonstrate that satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective tool for a surface sediment discrimination and long term morphologic change estimation in tidal flats.

A new calculation method of expected overtopping probability of rubble mound breakwater considering real tide occurrence has been proposed. A calculation method of expected overtopping probability of rubble mound breakwater was proposed by Kweon and Suh (2003). In their calculation, the fluctuation of tidal elevation was expressed by the sinusoidal change that yields the uniform distribution of occurrence frequency. However, the realistic distribution of tidal elevation should influence on the overtopping chance. In this study, the occurrence frequency of tidal elevation obtained from the real sea is included. The tidal elevation used in this study is collected from the east coastal part of Korean peninsular. Analyzing the annual data of the tidal fluctuation measured hourly during 355 days, the distribution of occurrence frequency is formulated utilizing by the normal distribution with one peak. Among the calculation procedures of annual maximum wave height, wave height-period joint distribution, wave run-up height and occurrence frequency of tide, only the annual maximum wave height is again chosen randomly from normal distribution to consider the uncertainty. The others are treated by utilizing the distribution function or relationship itself, It is found that the inclusion of the variability of tidal elevation has great influence on the computation of the expected overtopping probability of rubble mound breakwater. The bigger standard deviation of occurrence frequency is, the lower the overtopping probability of rubble mound breakwater is.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the tidal volumes and airway pressures of 3 mask-sealing methods (one hand C-E, two hands C-E, and one hand O-E) for ventilation treatment. Methods: The study subjects were 45 paramedic students. Tidal volume was measured for the three sealing methods by setting a ventilator, connecting it to the masks for 2 minutes, and using Respi-trainer software. Results: Regarding general characteristics, the group of men, in upper grades, and with practical training experience and experience and experience in the implementation of bag-valve-mask ventilation provided higher tidal volumes. Regarding physical characteristics, larger hands and greater grip strength correlated with higher tidal volume. Two hands C-E generated the highest tidal volume of $483.78{\pm}34.14mL$, one hand O-E generated $449.59{\pm}51.09mL$ and one hand C-E generated $394.31{\pm}68.95mL$. Conclusion: Means of tidal volumes were statistically significantly different based on mask sealing methods (p<.001). Two hand C-E was performed by the two-persons task and was suggested as the most effective method. For the one-person task, one hand O-E was the more effective method compared to the previous one hand C-E.
In this study, a digital elevation model (DEM) in tidal flat of Suncheon Bay, one of the most ecological preserved area in the world, was generated from digital aerial stereo-images. The focal lengths for the aerial stereo-images were adjusted using ground control points (GCPs) in order to improve the accuracy of camera parameters. We proposed matching sizes suitable for generating DEM in tidal flat and a method for eliminating excessive position errors using intersection-distance($P_R$) threshold value. The accuracies of the DEM generated from the proposed method as well as the commercial S/W were compared with the elevation profiles measured by Total Station in the filed. As the results, the DEM generated by the proposed method showed better result (maximum deviation is a -21 centimeters) with detailed topography than DEM by the commercial S/W in the region. These results suggest that the DEM of tidal flat, which hardly obtained with the traditional methods, can be generated from digital aerial images by applying the proposed method in this study. We believe that the generated DEM in tidal flat can be an essential data for monitoring the sediment erosion and deposit of the tidal flat.
