  • DPCap analysis can assist in determining the maximum environmental forces the DP system can counteract for a given heading. DPCap analysis results are highly affected by the thrust forces provided by the thrust system which consists of several kinds of thrusters. The thrust forces and moment are determined by the maximum thrust of the thrusters as well as the thruster configuration. In this paper, a novel local optimization of thruster configuration based on a synthesized positioning capability criterion is proposed. The combination of the discrete locations of the thrusters forms the thruster configuration and is the input, and the synthesized positioning capability is the output. The quantified synthesized positioning capability of the corresponding thruster configuration can be generated as the output. The optimal thruster configuration is the one which makes the vessel has the best positioning capability. A software program was developed based on the present study. A local optimization of thruster configuration for a supply vessel was performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the program. Even though the program cannot find the global optimal thruster configuration, its high efficiency makes it essentially practical in an engineering point. It may be used as a marine research tool and give guidance to the designer of the thrust system.

  • MRE-1 dual thruster module(DTM) which will be installed to the present under development KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) can provide reliable and cost-effective means of propulsive control for attitude and maneuvering control system. Thruster heat shield, one of the main components of DTM, is designed to intercept the radiative heat exchange between thruster and satellite during firing. The inside diameter of the current configuration will be decreased a little compared with that of the previous one due to manufacturing method change. Therefore, the possibility of interference between thruster and heat shield due to configuration change is investigated through structural analysis and their results are described in this paper.

  • An attitude control system using reaction thrusters for the upper stage of a launch vehicle is considered. The thruster configuration (position and direction) determines control system response, fuel consumption, effective torque and system fault tolerance. We propose a procedure for finding the optimal thruster configuration with desired control effectiveness over the range of selected torque commands. An optimization technique called Particle Swarm Optimization is used for the numerical experiments. The validity of the solution is checked through computer simulations.

  • Time-optimal performances are analyzed in the sense of inner loop. A varying-time sharing thrusting logic is suggested as a new sequential paired thrusting logic for fast maneuvers of satellites with coupled thruster configuration. Its time-optimal maneuvering performance is compared with two conventional thrusting logics: separate thrusting logic and constant-time sharing sequential paired thrusting logic. It is found that the newly suggested varying-time sharing thrusting logic can be easily implemented by adjusting the conventional constant-time logic with its thrust on-time, while it can reduce the maneuvering time enormously as much as the separate thrusting logic. The performance of the logic is simulated on the agile maneuvering spacecraft model KOMPSAT-II.

  • This paper describes the thrusters configuration optimized in preliminary performances for COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). The exact values of the thrusters tilt angles must be frozen for the manufacturing of COMS platform based on the EUROSTAR 3000 platform as these angles depend on the spacecraft center of mass position and thrusters location, the definition process has to be performed specifically for COMB. Concerning pitch control thrusters (6, 7), South thrusters (1, 2, 3), and East/West thrusters (4. ~, their optimum positions and force orientations based on the thrusters A/B middle position and MOL (Middle Of Life) are obtained. The torques of thrusters (plume and geometrical torques) are minimized to improve the preliminary performance of thrusters.

  • CFD analysis of the fuel injection pattern and the flow field surrounding the liquid propellant injector of a small thruster is performed. A good agreement is shown with PIV test data for the initial configuration. Analysis on various injector shapes is performed to observe the effect of injector shape on the trajectories of liquid droplet. A various shapes of injector is investigated to enhance spray pattern of the small injector.

  • This paper discusses wheel offloading approaches of COMS which has a single side solar array system for the accommodation of the optical payloads. First of all, in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and reflect practical implementation point of view, thruster sets for wheel offloading are proposed based on numerical analyses taking into account the COMS configuration. In this analysis, it is assumed that the wheel offloading is conducted twice a day. Secondly, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed thruster sets, orbit simulations have been conducted for several wheel offloading approaches and compared.

  • This paper introduces a thruster attitude control system for the KSR-III and addresses system configuration, design condition for several components and development systems. These systems were confirmed through environmental tests, compatibility tests with other sub-systems and are planned to launch by this year. After the launch test, it can be redesigned for optimal systems using post-analysis.

  • In this study, triaxial velocity is analyzed for COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) configuration, which is generated when thrusters are used to dump wheel momentum. Since COMS is designed to periodically change the thruster set in order to uniformly decrease the performance of thrusters, triaxial velocity would be different during the change of thruster set. So, the triaxial velocity generated due to the change of thruster set is optimized.

  • MRE-1 Dual Thruster Module(DTM), which will be used in KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite), can provide reliable and cost-effective means for attitude and maneuvering control system. Thruster heat shield, one of the main components of DTM, is designed to prevent the critical radiative heat exchange between thruster and satellite during firing. To overcome the manufacturing difficulties, a electroforming process is preferred to classical welding process. In this case, an inner diameter of a new shield will be decreased a little due to the change of manufacturing process. Therefore, the interference problem between thruster nozzle and heat shield is investigated through structural analysis and their results are described in this paper.
