Frame composed of concrete-filled steel tubular columns and I-shaped steel beam has been researched in order to development reasonable connection details. The present paper describes the results of an experimental program in four different connection details. The connection details considered include through-bolt between I-shaped steel beams and concrete-filled steel tubular columns and two details of welded connections. One of the welded connection details is stiffened by angles welded in the interior of the profile wall at the beam flange level. The specimens were tested in a cruciform loading arrangement with variable monotonic loading on the beams and constant compressive load on the column. For through-bolt details, the contribution of friction and bearing were investigated by embedding some of the bolts in the concrete. The results of the tests show that through-bolt connection details are very ductility and the bearing is not important to the behavior of these moment connections. The angles welded in the interior of the profile wall increase the strength and stiffness of the welded connection detail. In addition, the behavior curves of these connections are compared and some interesting conclusions are drawn. The results are summarized for the strength and stiffness of each connection.
This paper reports the experimental results of three through bolt beam-column connections under pure shear forces using modified push-out tests. The investigated specimens include extended end-plates and six through-bolts connecting square concrete-filled steel tubular column (S-CFST) to steel beams. The main goal of this study is to investigate if and how the mechanical shear connectors, such as steel angles and stud bolts, contribute to the shear transfer mechanisms in the steel-concrete interface of the composite column. The contribution of shear studs and steel angles to improve the shear resistance of steel-concrete interface in through-bolt connections was investigated using tests. The results showed that their contribution is not significant when the beam-column connection is included in the push-out tests. The specimens failed by pure shear of the long bolts, and the ultimate load can be predicted using the shear resistance of the bolts under shear forces. The predicted values of load allowed obtaining a good agreement with the tests results.
Through bolt connections in Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (CFSTs) has been proved to be good in terms of seismic performance and constructability. Stiffened extended end plate connection with full through type bolt helps to avoid field weld altogether, and hence to improve the quality of joints. An experimental study was conducted on the hysteretic performance of square interior beam-column connections using flat extended end plates with through bolt. The study focuses on the effect of the bond between the tie rod and the core concrete on the cyclic performance of the joint. The study also quantifies how much the interior joint is getting strengthened due to the confinement effect induced by bi-directional bolting, which is widely used in 3D moment resisting frames. For a better understanding of the mechanism and for the prediction of shear capacity of the panel zone, a mathematical model was generated. The various parameters included in the model are the influence of axial load, amount of prestress induced by bolt tightening, anchorage, and the concrete strut action. The study investigates the strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation characteristics. The results indicate that the seismic resistance is at par with American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) seismic recommendations. The bidirectional bolting and bond effect have got remarkable influence on the performance of joints.
In this paper, a novel but practical approach named series/parallel multi-sensing technique was proposed to evaluate the bolt looseness in a bolt group. The smart washers (SWs), which were fabricated by embedding a Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducer into two flat metal rings, were installed to the bolts group. By series connection of SWs, the impedance signals of different bolts can be obtained through only one sweep. Therefore, once the loosening occurred, the shift of different peak frequencies can be used to locate which bolt has loosened. The proposed multi input single output (MISO) damage detection scheme is very suitable for the structural health monitoring (SHM) of joint with a large number of bolts connection. Another notable contribution of this paper is the proposal of 3-dB bandwidth root mean square deviation (3 dB-RMSD) which can quantitatively evaluate the severity of bolt looseness. Compared with the traditional naked-eye observation method, the equivalent circuit based 3-dB bandwidth can accurately define the calculation range of RMSD. An experiment with three bolted connection specimens that installed the SWs was carried out to validate our proposed approach. Experimental result shows that the proposed 3 dB-RMSD based multi-sensing technique can not only identify the loosened bolt but also monitor the severity of bolt looseness.
Shearing strength test in tension type was investigated to determine the shear resistance of bolt and drift-pin connection of domestic larix glulam. The specimen was connected with bolt and drift-pin in the inserted plate type, and only bolt in the side plate type. The diameter of bolt and drift-pin used in the experiment are 12, 16 and 20 mm. The hole of bolt was drilled at the end-distance 5 d and 7 d. Tension load was loaded in the direction parallel to grain. The shear resistance was evaluated according to end-distance through this, the yield load was compared with the experimental yield load, using Larsen's formula. The prototype design strength is based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d and the reduction factor of end-distance 5 d was calculated. The results were as follows. 1. The average of maximum load of drift-pin connection was higher by 3~30% at the inserted type than at bolt connection with increasing diameter. In bolt connection, the average of maximum load of the side type was 1.54~2.07 times higher than that of the inserted type. In the same diameter, the average of maximum load of end-distance 7 d was higher by 8~44% than that of 5 d. 2. The bearing stress was 1.16~1.41 times higher at the inserted connection than at drift-pin connection, and 1.37~1.86 times higher at 7 d than at 5 d. Also, when the slenderness ratio was below 7.5 at drift-pin connection and below 6.0 at inserted connection, the lateral capacity was good. 3. The ratio of the experimental yield load and the predicted yield load calculated by Larsen's formula proposed by Larsen was 0.80~1.10 at inserted connection, and 0.75~1.46 at side connection. 4. When the inserted bolt connection was based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d, the reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm connection, 0.93 at 16 mm and 0.85 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm the inserted drift-pin connection, 0.93 at 16 mm, 0.93 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.79 at the side connection of the 12 mm bolt connection and 0.80 at 16 mm.
Through extensive research, there exist a new type of connection between railway bridge girders and steel-concrete composite panels. In addition to conventional shear connectors, newly developed blind bolts have been recently adopted for retrofitting. However, the body of knowledge on their influence and application to railway structures has not been thoroughly investigated. This study has thus placed a particular emphasis on the application of blind bolts on the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a feasible alternative constituent of railway track upgrading. Finite element modeling has been used to simulate the behaviours of the precast steel-concrete panels with common types of bolt connection using commercially available package, ABAQUS. The steel-concrete composite track slabs have been designed in accordance with Australian Standards AS5100. These precast steel-concrete panels are then numerically retrofitted by three types of most practical bold connections: head studded shear connector, Ajax blind bolt and Lindapter hollow bolt. The influences of bolt connections on load and stress transfers and structural behaviour of the composite track slabs are highlighted in this paper. The numerical results exhibit that all three bolts can distribute stresses effectively and can be installed on the bridge girder. However, it is also found that Lindapter hollow bolts are superior in minimising structural responses of the composite track slabs to train loading.

This paper presents a primary study for a new method of enhancing measurement using impedance analysis method, which is widely used for structure health monitoring. Many of skyscrapers, bridges, tunnels, which have been built up several years, and nearly reached their operating life due to aging crack, material deterioration, and so on. therefore, the health monitoring technique has obtained considerable attention. The usage of the PZT sensor is proposed, and the coupling torque of bolt-connection overlapping beam is assumed. By using the torque wrench, it is easy to apply torque of different values to each bolt. The coupling torque is adjusted gradually from $3N{\cdot}m\;to\;0N{\cdot}m$ with the decrement of $1N{\cdot}m$. Simultaneously, the impedance peak variation is measured. The peak frequency variation can be determined through the change of bolt coupling torque.

In this paper, performance of EMI interface and multi-channel wireless impedance sensor node is evaluated for SHM on bolted connection. To achieve the objective, following approaches are implemented. Firstly, an interface washer is designed to monitor loosened bolt through the variation in EMI of interface washer due to change in preload in bolt. Secondly, a multi-channel wireless impedance sensor node based on Imote2 platform is designed for automated and cost-efficient impedance-based SHM on bolted connections. Finally, performance of the multi-channel wireless impedance sensor node and the interface washer are experimentally validated for a lab-scale bolted connection model. A damage monitoring method using RMSD index of EMI signatures is utilized to examine the strength of each individual bolted connection.
Attempts were made to analyze the behavior of single and multiple-bolted connections through theoretical methods such as European yield theory, empirical approaching method, and semi-rigid theory instead of many experimental methods that have been actually inefficient and non-economical. In the case of a single-bolted connection, if accurate characteristic values of a material could be guaranteed, it would be more convenient and economical to perform the behavior analysis using a model based on the semi-rigid theory, instead of the existing complex yield model, or the empirical formula which produces errors, giving different results from the actual ones. If the variables of equation determining the load and deformation could be appropriately controlled, the analytical method in conjunction with a semi-rigid theory could be effectively applied to obtain the desirably predicted value, considering that the appropriate solution could be derived through a simpler equation using a less difficult method compared to the existing yield model. It is concluded that analytical method with semi-rigid theory can be used in the behavior analysis of bolted connection because our developed method showed excellent analysis ability of behavior until number of bolt is two. Although our analytical method has the disadvantage that the number of bolt is limited to two, it is concluded that it has the advantage than numerical method which complicated and time-consuming.

Many studies have been conducted on the high tension bolt friction connection in the view of the field practice. Those effort, however, unfortunately have not been appropriately applied in the design specifications. Recently, particularly for steel bridges, rationalization of design takes greater attention from designers and hence, demand on rationalization of high tension connection becomes more significant. The purpose of this study is to suggest direction for the rationalization of high tension bolt connection and to also provide fundamental information for the improvement of the design specifications. In order to accomplish the purposes, the design specifications in Korea was analyzed and compared with other specification from abroad, and was studied one of the most important factors including slip coefficient, and the specifications on the size of bolt holes. The effect of over-sized bolt hole and the reduction of axial force on bolt was evaluated through the experimental studies on the slippage of the high tension bolt connections. Other research topics included herein includes the difference of slip coefficients, the effect of over-sized bolt holes and the gap distance of members, and the application of filler plate and corrosion protected bolts. From the research results, it is known that the specifications in Korea apply a constant slip coefficient with respect to the contacted surface conditions while various coefficients are available depending on the contacted surface conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that the specifications in Korea also develop and detail the slip coefficient which can appropriately take account of the variation of the contacted surface conditions. It is also suggested that the limitation abroad on the over-sized bolt hole may be applied for enhancing the effectiveness of construction.
