  • In this paper, based on first-order shear deformation theory, the governing equations of motion for a sandwich curved beam including an elastic core and two piezo-magnetic face-sheets are presented. The curved beam model is resting on Pasternak's foundation and subjected to applied electric and magnetic potentials on the piezo-magnetic face-sheets and transverse loading. The five equations of motion are analytically solved and the bending and vibration results are obtained. The influence of important parameters of the model such as direct and shear parameters of foundation and applied electric and magnetic potentials are studied on the electro-mechanical responses of the problem. A comparison with literatures was performed to validate our formulation and results.

  • In all Rapid Prototyping(RP) processes, computer-aided design(CAD) solid model is sliced into thin layers of uniform, but not necessarily constant, thickness in the building direction. Each cross-sectional layer is successively deposited and, at the same time, bonded onto the previous layer, the stacked layers form a physical part of the model. The objective of this study is to develop a method for obtaining necessary coordinates$(x,\;y,\;\theta_x,\;\theta_y)$ to position linear hotwire of the cutting system in three-dimensional space for the Variable Lamination Manufacturing process (VLM-S), which utilizes expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material. In order to examine the applicability of the developed method to VLM-S, various three-dimensional shapes, such as a spanner, a patterned columm, and a pyramid were made using data obtained from the method.

  • To achieve a cooperative work between human and robot, it is thought helpful to estimate the states of human mind, which originates his behavior. In this paper, human mind was considered to modify instinctive desires according to the conditions of external world surrounding the instinct. A simple human mind model was designed so that it finds a balance between instinctive desire and restriction from the external world. The external world is divided into three sub-worlds like subject´s whole body, its partner and concerned periphery. Proposed mind model has three-layers construction. Each of the layer tries to find a balance between desire and restriction from external world. In each layer, the role of finding the balance was expressed by an identical optimal control minimizing a performance index function of quadratic form with a weight factor, which is rearranged and named ...

  • Design of a high-speed railway line requires collaboration of heterogeneous application systems and of engineers with different background. Object-based 3D models with metadata can be a shared information model for the effective collaborative design. In this paper, railway infrastructure information model is proposed to enable integrated and inter-operable works throughout the life-cycle of the railway infrastructures, from planning to maintenance. In order to develop the model, object-based 3-D models were built for a 10km railway among Korea high-speed railway lines. The model has basically three information layers for designers, contractors and an owner, respectively. Prestressed concrete box-girders are the most common superstructure of bridges. The design information layer has metadata on requirements, design codes, geometry, analysis and so on. The construction layer has data on drawings, real data for material and products, schedules and so on. The maintenance layer for the owner has the final geometry, material data, products and their suppliers and so on. These information has its own data architecture which is derived from similar concept of product breakdown structure(PBS) and work breakdown structure(WBS). The constructed RIIM for the infrastructures of the high-speed railway was successfully applied to various areas such as design check, structural analysis, automated estimation, construction simulation, virtual viewing, and digital mock-up. The integrated information model can realize virtual construction system for railway lines and dramatically increase the productivity of the whole engineering process.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to analyze the marginal fit of three-unit resin prostheses printed with the stereolithography (SLA) method in two build orientations (45°, 60°) and two layer thicknesses (50 ㎛, 100 ㎛). MATERIALS AND METHODS. A master model for a three-unit resin prosthesis was designed with two implant abutments. Forty specimens were printed using an SLA 3D printer. The specimens were printed with two build orientations (45°, 60°), and each orientation was printed with two layer thicknesses (50 ㎛, 100 ㎛). The marginal fit was measured as the marginal gap (MG) and absolute marginal discrepancy (AMD), and MG and AMD measurements were performed at 8 points per abutment, for 16 points per specimen. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was separately performed on the MG and AMD values of the build orientations and layer thicknesses. Moreover, one-way ANOVA was performed for each point within each group. RESULTS. The margins of the area adjacent to the pontic showed significantly high values, and the values were smaller when the build orientation was 45° than when it was 60°. However, the margin did not differ significantly according to the layer thicknesses. CONCLUSION. The marginal fit of the three-unit resin prosthesis fabricated by the SLA 3D method was affected by the pontic. Moreover, the marginal fit was affected by the build orientation. The 45° build orientation is recommended.

  • The effects of upstream velocity profiles on the flow around a low-rise rectangular prism submerged in a turbulent boundary layer have been investigated. Three different boundary layer profiles are generated, which are characterized by boundary layer height, displacement thickness, and momentum thickness. Flow characteristics variations caused by the different layers such as those in turbulent kinetic energy distribution and locations of re-circulating cavities and reattachment points have been precisely measured by using a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Observations were made in a boundary layer wind tunnel at $Re_H$=7900, based on a model height of 40 mm and a free stream velocity of 3 m/s with 15 - 20% turbulence intensity.

  • The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's ${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster.

  • Subsurface topology estimation is an important factor in the geophysical survey. Electrical impedance tomography is one of the popular methods used for subsurface imaging. The EIT inverse problem is highly nonlinear and ill-posed; therefore, reconstructed conductivity distribution suffers from low spatial resolution. The subsurface region can be approximated as piece-wise separate regions with constant conductivity in each region; therefore, the conductivity estimation problem is transformed to estimate the shape and location of the layer boundary interface. Each layer interface boundary is treated as an open boundary that is described using front points. The subsurface domain contains multi-layers with very complex configurations, and, in such situations, conventional methods such as the modified Newton Raphson method fail to provide the desired solution. Therefore, in this work, we have implemented a 7-layer artificial neural network (ANN) as an inverse problem algorithm to estimate the front points that describe the multi-layer interface boundaries. An ANN model consisting of input, output, and five fully connected hidden layers are trained for interlayer boundary reconstruction using training data that consists of pairs of voltage measurements of the subsurface domain with three-layer configuration and the corresponding front points of interface boundaries. The results from the proposed ANN model are compared with the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) for interlayer boundary estimation, and the results show that ANN is successful in estimating the layer boundaries with good accuracy.
