The behavior of a three-dimensional pure rectangular water jet with aspect ratio of 10 was experimentally investigated based on the results of the mean velocity field obtained by PIV. The saddle back distribution was observed in the lateral distribution along the major axis. The theoretical centerline velocity equation derived from the point source concept using the spreading rate for the axisymmetric jet was in good agreement with the measured centerline velocity and gave the division of the potential core region, two-dimensional region, and axisymmetric region. The range of the two-dimensional region divided by the criterion of the theoretical centerline velocity decay for the aspect ratio of 10 was observed to be smaller than that of the transition region. The applicability of the two-dimensional model to the behavior of the rectangular jet with low aspect ratio or the wastewater discharged from a multiport diffuser in the deep water of real ocean may result in significant error in the transition and axisymmetric regions after the two-dimensional region. In the two-dimensional region, the Gaussian constant tended to be conserved, and the spreading rate slightly decreased at the end of the two-dimensional region. The normalized turbulent intensity along the centerline of the jet initially abruptly increased and showed relatively higher intensity for higher Reynolds number.
In this study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the flow characteristics of a two-dimensional neutrally buoyant jet in the inlet region of a rectangular laboratory settling tank. Velocity measurements were made with a three-component ADV. Two types of baffles were installed in front of two-dimensional slot; a one-sided and a two-sided baffle. The flow fields from a plane jet impinging on these two types of baffles and a plane jet without a baffle showed quite different characteristics. To concentrate on investigating these flow characteristics, the effects of density currents due to temperature difference or the presence of sediments were not studied. Results of the experiments reveal that the use of the two-sided baffle results in the shortest inlet region. Also shown is that, in addition to the types of baffles, the Froude number turns out to be an important factor in the extent of the inlet region.

The present study focuses on the characteristics of a supersonic jet flowing from a rectangular nozzle exit on a flat plate. Flow visualization techniques using schlieren and kerosene-lampblack tracing are utilized to investigate shock reflection structures and boundary-layer separations over a flat plate. Wall pressure measurements are also carried out to quantitatively analyze the flow structures. All observations are repeated for multiple jet flow boundary conditions by varying the flap length and nozzle pressure ratio. The experimental results show that the jet flow structures over the flat plate are highly three-dimensional with strong bleeding flows from the plate sides, and that they are sensitive to plate length and nozzle pressure ratio. A multi-component force measurement device is also utilized to observe the characteristics of the jet flow thrust vectoring over the plate. The maximum thrust deflection angle of the jet is about $8^{\circ}$, demonstrating the applicability of thrust vector control via a flat plate installed at the nozzle exit.
This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

Stereoscopic PIV measurements were made in the wind tunnel with the actual size waterjet model. The main wind tunnel provides the vehicle velocity while the secondary wind tunnel adjusts the jet issuing velocity. Experiments were performed at the range of jet to vehicle velocity ratio (JVR), 3.75 to 8.0 and the Reynolds number of 220,000 based on the jet velocity and the hydraulic diameter of the waterjet intake duct. Wall pressure distributions were measured for various JVRs. Three dimensional velocity fields were obtained at the inlet and outlet of the intake duct. It is found that severe acceleration is occurred at the lip region while deceleration is noticeable at the ramp side. The detailed three dimensional velocity fields can be used as the accurate velocity input for the CFD simulation. It is interesting to note that there are many different types of vortices in the instantaneous velocity field. It can be considered that those vortices are generated by the corner of rectangular section of the intake and Gortler vortices due to the curved wall. However, typical secondary flow with a pair of counter rotating vortex pair is clearly seen in the ensemble averaged velocity field.

In the fully developed internal flow fields, there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet when jet is Injected Into the flow. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods. An instantaneous laser tomographic method is used to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation in the branch pipe flow. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.7m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number $R_{cf}$, based on the duct height is $5.6{\times}10^3$, diameter/height ratios(d/H) 0.14 and velocity ratios 3.0. Oil mist with the size of $10{\mu}m$ diameter is used for the scattering particle. The instantaneous topological features of the vortex ring roll-up of the jet shear layer and characteristics of this flow are studied in detail by performing flow visualization in rectangular duct flow. It is found that the formation and roll-up of ring vortices is a periodic phenomenon. The detailed topology of the vortices in the near field of a cross -flow jet and the mechanism associated with them give enforced hints of vortex breakdown within the vortex system due to the interaction of the jet and the cross-flow.

This paper presents numerical analysis and design optimization of various turbine blade cooling techniques with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis. The fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed using ANSYS-CFX 11.0. A fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness with the radial basis neural network method. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. The impingement jet cooling has been performed to investigate heat transfer characteristic with geometry variables. Distance between jet nozzle exit and impingement plate, inclination of nozzle and aspect ratio of nozzle hole are considered as geometry variables. The area averaged Nusselt number is evaluated each geometry variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered array pin-fins has been investigated to increase heat transfer performance ad to decrease friction loss using KRG modeling. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the eight diameter of the pin-fins and ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to diameter of the pin-fins selected as design variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered dimples on opposite walls are formulated numerically to enhance heat transfer performance. The ratio of the dimple depth and dimple diameter are selected as geometry variables.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the characteristics of static and total pressure distribution in the upward free water jet system impinged on a downward flat plate. The rectangular nozzle was used and its contraction and aspect ratio was five and about seven respectively. Experimental conditions considered were jet velocity, distance between nozzle and flat plate, height of supplementary water. It was founded that pressure distribution on the flat plate had the Gaussian curve when the pressure at stagnation point and impinging half width were chosen as the scaling parameters. The maximum pressure was shown at the stagnation point. The central impingement velocity decreased with the increment of distance between nozzle and flat plate, and its slop of decay was similar to that of chracteristics decay region in the three-dimensional free jet.

An experimental study for the characteristics of the thrust-vectoring of a sonic jet utilizing the coanda flap installed at a rectangular nozzle exit is performed. Two side plates are installed at both sides of the flap to decrease the three dimensional effects of the jet on the flap surface. Schlieren flow visualizations and quantitative measurements of the deflection angle of thrusting vector show that the side plates are able to delay the separation of the jet at the downstream of the flap surface. Substantial increase in the deflection angle of the jet as high as $72^{\circ}$ and small thrust loss as low as 7% are obtained by the present thrust-vectoring technique using the side plates.
