This paper describes an automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for three-dimensional structures consisting of free-form surfaces. This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial sol id modelers is employed for three-dimensional sol id structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well control led by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional sol id structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.
Clinically, proximal bone resorption in the femur is frequently seen postoperatively on the follow up XI-rays after total hip replacement (THR). We developed the finite element model of cementless THR. The model is two dimensional side plate model, whereby the three dimensional structural integrity of the bone can be accounted for by a separate two dimensional mesh, a side plate. The subject of this article is the development and application of this two dimensional side plate FEM to study the reverse effect of the various degree of bone resorption of femur after THR. The results of this study indicates that 1) two dimensional side plate model is good and simple alternative to complex three dimensional model and 2) the severity of the proximal bone resorption has the effect of more increasing stress on the cortex at the level of femoral stem tip.

Finite element alternating method has been suggested and used effectively to obtain the fracture parameters in assessing the integrity of cracked structures. The method obtains the solution from alternating independently between the FEM solution for an uncracked body and the crack solution in an infinite body. In the paper, the finite element alternating method is extended in order to obtain the elastic-plastic stress fields of a three dimensional inner crack. The three dimensional crack solutions for an infinite body were obtained using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. As an example of a three dimensional inner crack, a penny-shaped crack in a finite body was analyzed and the obtained elastc-plastic stress fields were compared with the solution obtained from the finite element analysis with fine mesh. It is noted that in the region ahead of the crack front the stress values from FEAM are close to the values from FEM. But large discrepancy between two values is observed near the crack surfaces.
This paper presents a double excited three degree-of-freedom (3DOF) motor. The proposed 3DOF motor is designed with a laminated structure, making it easy to manufacture. In addition, it has windings on the stator and rotor, and does not require an expensive permanent magnet. We explain the structure, principle of motion, and design of the proposed motor, and perform an analysis of the static characteristics using the two- and three-dimensional finite element methods (3D FEM). The feasibility of 3D FEM analysis is confirmed by comparing the 3D FEM analysis and experimental results for the rolling and pitching motion. We also confirm the occurrence of holding torque in every motion.
Three-dimensional forging analysis becomes an inevitable tool to make design process more reliable and more producible. In this study, in order to make the investigation for three-dimensional forging analysis more conveniently and accurately, a new post processor was developed. For post-processing of multi-stage forging simulation, efficient data structure was proposed and applied by using STL. New file architecture was developed to handle successive and huge data efficiently, common in three-dimensional forging analysis. Since sectioning and flow tracing plays an important role in the investigation of analysis result, we developed an algorithm suitable for 4-node and 10-node tetrahedron. This flow tracing algorithm can trace and reverse-trace flow through remeshing. Developed program shows good performance and functionality. Especially, a big size problem can be handled easily due to proposed data structure and file architecture.

An optical pickup actuator is an objective-lens-moving mechanism that provides a means to follow the disk displacement accurately(1). In this paper, a slim type optical pickup actuator for Notebook PCs is analyzed and designed to improve the driving sensitivity A three dimensional equivalent magnetic circuit network method (3D-EMCN method) is proposed for an analysis method which provides better characteristics in both precision and computation time of analysis comparing with a commercial three-dimensional finite element (3D-FEM) codes. To verify the validity of proposed method, we made a comparison between the analysis results and the experimental ones. We also compared this analysis results with 3D-FEM results. Among the several optimal algorithm, we adopt a niching genetic algorithm, which renders a set of the multiple optimal solutions. RCS (Restricted Competition Selection) niching genetic algorithm is used for optimal design of the actuator's performance. Recently, the pickup actuator needs additional driving structure for radial and tangential tilting motion to obtain better pick-up performance. So we applied the proposed method to the model containing tilting coils.
A forked tunnel, as a special complicated underground structure, is composed of big-arch tunnel, multi-arch tunnel, neighborhood tunnels and separate tunnels according to the different distances between two separate tunnels. Due to the complicated process of design and construction, surrounding jointed rock mass stability of the big-arch tunnel which belongs to the forked tunnel during excavation is a hot issue that needs special attentions. In this paper, an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model for jointed rock mass is proposed based on the coupling method considering elasto-plastic and damage theories, and the irreversible thermodynamics theory. Based on this elasto-plastic damage constitutive model, a three dimensional elasto-plastic damage finite element code (D-FEM) is implemented using Visual Fortran language, which can numerically simulate the whole excavation process of underground project and perform the structural stability of the surrounding rock mass. Comparing with a popular commercial computer code, three dimensional fast Lagrangian analysis of continua (FLAC3D), this D-FEM has advantages in terms of rapid computing process, element grouping function and providing more material models. After that, FLAC3D and D-FEM are simultaneously used to perform the structural stability analysis of the surrounding rock mass in the forked tunnel considering three different computing schemes. The final numerical results behave almost consistent using both FLAC3D and D-FEM. But from the point of numerically obtained damage softening areas, the numerical results obtained by D-FEM more closely approach the practical behaviors of in-situ surrounding rock mass.

This work presents the three-dimensional extended strain smoothing approach in the framework of finite element method, so-called smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) for quasi-incompressible hyperelastic materials undergoing the large deformations. The proposed method is known that the incompressible limits, such as over-estimation of stiffness and distorted mesh sensitivity, can be overcome in two dimensions. Therefore, in this paper, the idea of Cell-based, Edge-based and Node-based strain smoothing approaches is extended to three-dimensions. The construction of subcells and smoothing domains for each methods are explained. The smoothed strain-displacement matrix and the stiffness matrix are obtained on each smoothing domain in the same manner with two-dimensional S-FEM. Various numerical tests are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of 3D-S-FEM. The obtained results are compared with analytical solutions to express the efficacy of the methods.
This paper presents a dynamic analysis of three-dimensional beams. Structures made of functionally graded materials are considered. Several higher-order as well as classical theories are derived by means of a compact notation for the a-priori expansion order of the displacement field over the beam cross-section. The governing differential equations and boundary conditions are obtained in a condensed nuclear form that does not depend on the kinematic hypotheses. The problem is, then, exactly solved in space by means of a Navier-type solution, whereas time integration is performed by means of Newmark's solution scheme. Slender and short simply supported beams are investigated. Results are validated towards three-dimensional FEM results obtained via the commercial software ANSYS. Numerical investigations show that good accuracy can be obtained through the proposed formulation provided that the appropriate expansion order is considered.

This paper has done a three-dimensional FEM analysis of the PM claw pole stepping motor. As magnetization happens in the z-axis, which does not have a constant value, three-dimensional FEM analysis is necessary for characteristic analysis of PM claw pole stepping motors. Because it is a type of permanent magnet motor, the PM claw pole stepping motor naturally has a detent torque. This torque is known to show negative effects on motor performance. To improve motor performance, reducing the detent torque is very important during the motor design. This paper applied DOE for optimization of stator pole design of the motor. Also, we compared motor performance by applying a different type of rotor shape, dividing the permanent magnet. To verify the simulation results, an experiment was done.
