Radicoid structure of herbaceous communities in Mt. Kumbyung, Chunchon, Kangwon-Do was clarified emphasizing on the dominance of clonal plants in relation to vegetation development. In the total vegetation, 46% species identified were rhizomatous, 26% were species with tap roots, and 13% were stoloniferous species. Thus, all clonal species, including plants with bulb, corm and tuber, covered 62.8% of the total species. in the understory of Quercus, Pinus and Larix forests, 68.2% were clonal, which means 5% more compare to total vegetaion. Dominance of clonal plants became more conspicuous as their importance value was calculated. That is, they covered average 86% for the following three communities: 85% in Quercus, 95% in Pinus, and 76% in Larix, Especially, the rhizomatous plants were remarkable. Overall, clonal species dominated over the other radicoid types in terms of not only the number of species, but also the importance value. Dominance of these species was more peculiar in understory of forests, indicating the occupancy of clonal plants was related to the vegetation development.
This study characterized the full range of vegetation in a upland wetland (marshland) in Korea. Classified community types were used to describe vegetation at the marshland and adjacent areas. The communities contained 44 species of vascular plants and all species were identified into four plant community types. The Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense type and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya type had a high representation infacultative upland species (FU) and obligate upland species (OU), respectively. The monocot type was dominant in marshland by Miscanthuns saccharifloruc and contained 14 species. Together the three areas contained four species, with the strongest indicator species being Ranunculus acris var. nipponicus, Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense, Hemerocallis fulva, and Miscanthuns sinensis var. purpurascens. Shannon-Weaver index of diversity also varied among the community types (F = 18.9, df = 2), with the types FU having significantly higher value (3.467) than the others (1.125 for type FW and 1.239 for type OU).
Neustonic calanoid copepods were collected at the South Sea of Korea using a David-Hempel neuston net. Four Pantel/apsis species (P. armata Giesbrecht, P. rega/is Dana, P. vil/asa Brady and P. yamadae Mori) were identified and the former three species were first recorded in the Korea. We present redescription of the four species with SEM micrographs of female genitalia. Female genital structure is species-specific and can be very useful for species classification in the genus Pantel/apsis. Also we discuss zoogeography of Pantel/apsis species and provide with a key to the species hitherto known in the Korean waters.
The ambient concentrations of gaseous and particulate phase ionic species and gaseous organic species in the Yochon industrial estate were measured during the spring ans summer of 1996. A three-stage filter pack sampler was used to collect particles and gaseous species, and stainless steel air sampling containers were used to collect air samples for organic species analyses. The concentrations of ions in aerosol wree comparable to those measured in Seoul. Aerosols measured were acidic, thus, most volatile acidic species were in the gas phase. The concentrations of organic species were highly variable, implying those were strongly dependent on the emissions of organic species from petrochemical plants. The concentrations of a few hazardous organic components were higher than those in Seoul or some populated areas in USA.
The genus Eurycletodes Sars, 1909 is reported for the first time in Korea. A new species of the genus Eurycletodes was collected from Hansando Island, South Sea of Korea. So far, Eurycletodes comprises 27 species, with no previously recorded species reported in East Asia, including Korea. Eurycletodes (Oligocletodes) vadumus sp. nov. is morphologically most closely related to E. (O.) denticulatus Por, 1967, E. (O.) aculeatus Sars, 1920, and E. (O.) diva Menzel, 2011, but clearly distinguishable from the others based on the following morphological characteristics: absence of A2 exopodal seta, A1 last segment with two inner setae, P4 exp-3 proximal inner seta modified, the ratio of length and of caudal rami (1.6 times), and mandibular palp with three setae. Together with the new species, the number of valid species in this genus has risen to 28. A key to species of the genus Eurycletodes is provided.
The content and composition of saponin compounds of Panax species were analyzed according to their species, region and processing type of red and white ginseng. The species employed were Korean-, Chinese-, Japanese red ginsengs, and Korean white ginseng of Panax ginseng, American- and Canadian ginsengs of Panax quinquefolium, and Panax notoinseng. Twelve main saponin components in the ginseng were identified and quantified using TLC and HPLC. All three species had remarkably different content and composition. However, within each species they were similar. Twelve major ginsenosides were determined in P. ginseng, eight in p. quinquefolium, and six in P. notoginseng. Of the components of P ginseng Rf, $Rh_1$, $Rh_2$ and Ra were not detected in P quinquefolium, and $Rb_2$, Rc, Rf, $Rh_2$, Ra and Ro not detected in P. notoinseam. Crude saponin content and protopanaxadiol/protopanaxatriol saponin ratio were compared. They were 4.81~5.24% and 1.27~ 1.45 in p. ginsengs, 7.01~7.25% and 2.12~ 2.15 in p. quinquefolium, 9.80% and 0.99 in P. notoineng. The prosapogenin and sapogenin content were different among the Panax species.
We identified 22 ciliate species, including five unrecorded ciliate species, from temporary ponds on a grass lawn. The five unrecorded species are as follows: class Nassophorea - Pseudomicrothorax agilis Mermod, 1914, Nassula exigua Kahl, 1931, class Colpodea - Cyrtolophosis mucicola Stokes, 1885, Maryna ovata (Gelei, 1950) Foissner, 1993, and class Spirotrichea - Meseres corlissi Petz & Foissner, 1992. Most of these 22 ciliate species disappeared from a raw culture within a few days (probably encystment), and a few cells were available from some species that resulted in incomplete identifications (e.g., genus-level). About the unrecorded five ciliate species, they are small in size (<60 ㎛ in vivo), and two of them live in a hyaline dwelling-tube, which is easily deserted by a cell with a stress. Their taxonomic classification is summarized as three classes, five orders, five families, and five genera. Here, we provide brief descriptions, micrographs of their morphology, and some remarks.
A study describing unrecorded and taxonomically undescribed indigenous species is in progress since 2006. Samples were collected from many sites in coastal waters and offshore of Korea as well as from Jeju Island. Since 2008, we have found ten unrecorded species of four genera belonging to family Dinophysaceae, Gonyaulacaceae, Gymnodiniaceae, and Heterocapsaceae. The species are as follows, Dinophysis elongata (2016 winter), D. nasuta (2016 winter), Gonyaulax alaskensis (2016 winter), G. diegensis (2017), G. monospina (2008), Amphidinium flagellans(2017), Heterocapsa circularisquama (2017), H. horiguchii (2017), H. lanceolata (2017), and H. pygmaea (2017) (note; The numbers in the parenthesis refer to the year in which the species was reported as unrecorded indigenous species by National Institute of Biological Resources, NIBR hereafter). Among them, seven species were described as newly recorded species in Korean waters, and three have been re-described in this study.
The genus Eumetriochroa Kumata & Kuroko, 1988 has been known as a small genus with twelve described species worldwide. In this study, we aimed to review the Korean species of the genus Eumetriochroa of the subfamily Oecophyllembiinae, which belongs to the family Gracillariidae. Three species of this genus are recognized from Korea. Among them, two species, Eumetriochroa araliella Kobayashi, Huang & Hirowatari, 2013 and E. hiranoi Kumata, 1998 are reported for the first time from Korea. All the known species were enumerated with their available information and briefly redescribed for the newly recorded species. The adults and genitalia of all the species are redescribed and illustrated.

In vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of three tropical browse species as assessed by DM and CP digestibility, and NDF and ADF degradability with incubation times (T) of 6, 12, 24 and 48h. During the in vivo digestibility experiment three male castrated sheep (age 16 - 25 months) with a mean liveweight of $11.5{\pm}0.9kg$ were placed in individual metabolism stalls and were allocated to one of the three browse species in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design. The browse species were all leguminous and consisted of: Acacia sieberina (A. sieberina), Ficus polita (F. polita), and Ficus sycomorus (F. sycomorus). The mean DM and CP contents of F. polita were higher than for A. sieberina and F. sycomorus (p<0.05). In contrast the NDF and ADF contents of F. sycomorus were higher compared to the other species examined (p<0.05). The in vitro DM and CP digestibility, and NDF and ADF degradability observed at different stages of incubation were higher in F. polita followed by A. sieberina and F. sycomorus. The DM and CP digestibility at 48 h incubation were 72.92, 74.84 and 53.52% and 77.38, 77.68 and 63.64% for A. seiberina, F. polita and F. sycomorus, respectively. This shows that F. polita contains more soluble materials which ruminant can benefit from and hence has more feeding value. The fermentation of F. sycomorus was slower for all the nutrients evaluated due to the presence of more fibre. Similarly, higher in vivo digestibility coefficient of DM, CP, NDF, ADF and hemicellulose were observed for F. polita reflecting its higher values of CP, ether extract (EE) and hemicellulose associated with lower values of NDF and ADF. Higher DMI and daily gain were recorded in sheep during feeding of F. polita compared to the other species evaluated. The digestibility of all the nutrients examined were higher in the in vivo than in the in vitro trial except for CP and DM. Sheep showed no visual signs of toxicity throughout the study periods. These results showed A. seiberina, F. polita and F. sycomorus can sustain sheep on a maintenance diet and could as well be used as a supplementary feed to low producing animals during the tropical dry season. Further research is needed to ascertain the viability of using these browse species on a long-term basis.
