  • A taxonomic study on the genus Tropocyclops has been accomplished as a part of the series of studies on the freshwater cyclopoid copepods in South Korea. As a result, the Tropocyclops prasinus, hitherto known from Korea in many reports and papers, turns out to be a species complex of three sibling species: T. prasinus (Fischer, 1860), T. ishidai n. sp., and T. setulifer n. sp. This paper deals with description of two of these new species with taxonomic accounts on their inter- or intraspecific morphological discrepancies.

  • A new species of leuconid cumaceans, Nippoleucon projectus n. sp. is described on the basis of the specimens collected from western shallow coast of the South Korea. This new species is easily distinguished from two previously recorded species (N. hinumensis and N. enoshimensis) in having the fifth abdominal segment prominently projected to rear at dorsal posterior portion and the carapace of the female with three spines on the frontal lobe.

  • The genus Gonia (Diptera: Tachinidae) is revised for the Korean species. We recognize four previously known species (G. chinensis, G. divisa, G. foersteri, and G. klapperichi), three newly recorded species in Korea (G. distinguenda, G. olgae, and G. ussuriensis) and a species new to science (G. nigricoma Lee and Han, sp. nov.). We here provide a key, descriptions, photographs and illustrations. We also inferred the phylogenetic relationships of the representative Palaearctic species using cladistic method.

  • Pyrgotidae is a small acalyptrate family including about 370 species worldwide and little attention has been given to their systematics until recently. Latest changes in taxonomic status of some of the Korean species made this review inevitable. In the present study, the Korean pyrgotid species are reviewed with discussion of their taxonomic status. We also provide a revised key to all 14 Korean species (seven Adapsilia, three Eupyrgota, two Parageloemyia, one Porpomastix, and one Tephritopyrgota species) supplemented by digital images to facilitate accurate identification.

  • This investigation was conducted to evaluate the shrimp flesh (SF) and shrimp by-product (SB) of the most abundant shrimp species (Metapenaeus affinis, Penaeus semisulcatus and Penaeus monodon) caught in Central Vietnam, with the emphasis on yield, gross and amino acid (AA) composition and effect of heat treatment. The results showed that the mean edible SF and SB (head and shells with tail) yields of the three shrimp species averaged 56.7 and 43.3%, respectively, of the total wet body weight, with the M. affinis generating the highest by-product yield (45.7%) and P. semisulcatus (40.6%) the lowest. Significant differences in dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and ash content were found between SF and SB. The DM content of SF (21.5%) was lower than of SB (24.9%) and the ash content (on a DM basis) of the SB in all shrimp species was more than three times that of the SF (p<0.05), whereas the CP content was almost twice as high in the SF as compared with the SB (p<0.05). The SB of the three species contained (on a DM basis) between 44.0 and 49.8% CP (p<0.05) and between 13.5 and 18.1% chitin (p<0.05). The Ca content of SB differed also between species (p<0.05). On average, the sum of AA in SB corresponded to 89.3% of the CP and essential AA accounted for about 50% of the total AA. The most abundant AA were arginine, aspartic and glutamic acids, which accounted for 33% of the total AA. Minor, but significant differences in some AA concentrations of SB between species were observed (p<0.05). With the exception of the DM and ether extract content, all other chemical constituents of entire shrimp, SF and SB were not significantly affected by heat treatment (p>0.05).

  • A total of 352 specimens of congeneric species of Agkistrodon was collected and morphometric analysis and starch-gel electrophoresis were carried out in order to investigate the taxonomic status of this genus. The results obtained in this study are as follows: Morphometric analysis 1. Three species are recognized based on Gloyd's criteria. There was no specimen that was doubtful to classify correctly. Therefore, it seems that Gloyd's morphological characters are good criteria to identify each species. 2. All three species are sympatric at two localities (Mt. Seolag, Gangwon-do, and Mt. Deogyu, Jeonra-bugdo) and A. caligino년 and A. b. brevicaudus are sympatric at Gwangneung and Mt. Yongmun, Gyonggi-do. No hybrids were found in these sympatric localities. 3. Notable sexual dimorphism was found in meristic characters. 4. A. saxatilis has signicantly more number of ventrals and shorter tail ratio than other two species. 5. There were no significant meristic character differences between A. caligino년 and A. b. brevicaudus. Genetic analysis 1. Among 26 loci investigated, 12 loci (46.1%) were identical in their mobility, 4 loci (15.4%) were nearly identical with minor frequency differences, and 10 loci (38.5%) showed interspecific mobility difference. 2. The average proportion of polymorphic loci was 9.03%. This is considerably less than that of other vertebrates. 3. The average S and D values between species are .695 and .342 respectively. These values indicate that three taxa are distinct species. 4. A. caliginosus is genetically more related to A. saxatilis than to Agkistrodon, namely A. b. brevicaudus, A. caligino년 and A. saxatilis, as proposed by Gloyd. Far from being mere morphological variants, as suggested by Kang and Yoon (1975), they are highly distinctive evolutionary units.

  • To provide information needed for managing fish resources and protecting the ecosystem of Cheonsu Bay, bimonthly variations in species composition and abundance of fish eggs and larvae were investigated. The samples were collected by using bongo net at three different stations from February 2020 to December 2021. Fish eggs were divided into Engrualis japonicas and unidentified eggs, of which Engragulis japonicus accounted for 85.6% of the total eggs collected. A total of 21 species representing 17 families and 6 orders were collected. The three dominant species were Gobiidae spp, Thryssa hamiltonii and E. japonicus and these three species accounted for 74.1% in the total number of individuals. The number of species was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020 and 2021; the number of individuals was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020. Temporal changes in the abundances of pelagic eggs and larval fishes corresponded with temperature.

  • Two newly recorded carnivorous amphipod species, Anonyx gurjanovai Steele, 1986 and A. nugax (Phipps, 1774) belonging to the family Uristidae Hurley, 1963, were collected from the East Sea, Korea. Anonyx gurjanovai is included in the A. laticoxae group and is characterized by a concave palm of the propodus in gnathopod 1 and small posteroventral projection at epimeron 3. The other species, A. nugax, represents the A. nugax group and is distinguished from congeneric species based on the presence of a shorter and less acute projection on epimeron 3. There are 13 species of the A. nugax group recorded worldwide, but this is the first report on the presence of the A. nugax group in Korean waters. Previously, three species of the genus Anonyx had been reported in Korea, and through this study, we have added two newly recorded species. Both the newly recorded Anonyx species are illustrated and compared with the related species. A key to the Anonyx species in Korea is also provided.

Three species, S. forcipata, S. stellatops, S. koreana are recognized with newly collected specimens. The first species is recorded newly in Korean spider fauna. A key to the species of the Korean Sinopoda spiders are also provided.
