  • Three Ovulid species collected from Jeju Island were identified as Habuprionovolva aenigma (Azuma & Cate, 1971), Habuprionovolva basilia (Cate, 1978) and Diminovula kosugei (Cate, 1973). This is the first record from the Korean waters, providing a description of the species with illustration for the shell morphology.

  • A floristic study on the diatom was carried out in coastal area at two seasons, August 2014 and April 2015, from three islands in the northern area of Yellow Sea of South Korea. A total of 117 species of diatoms, including 3 classes, 9 subclasses, 20 orders, 32 families and 54 genera, were identified based on LM and SEM examinations. Three species of diatoms, Gyrosigma obscurum, Pleurosigma frenguellianum, and P. sabangi were newly recorded in Korea. The historical synonyms of the species are presented for the floristic informations, the examined specimen for the each taxon is specified, and the distribution in three islands and detailed sampling localities of each taxon are given.

  • Phytoplanktons and environmental conditions in the Geum River near Gongju were investigated at three stations in July, 1979. Fifty eight kinds of hytoplanktons were identified and of these, Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta in this area appeared more in the number of species than that in the Han River. The number of species of Chlorophyta was double or more at station 2 and station 3 which were situated near Gongju than at station 1, upperstream of Gongju and the number of species of phytoplankton was also higher at station 2 and station 3 than at station 1. In physicochemcial conditons, water temperature at all of three stations was lower than air temperature and pH might have no significance among these three stations. All of these three stations were characterized as the slower flowing water type of downstream in diatom river community.

  • During a field survey of Korean marine ciliates, we collected three ciliate species from the eastern coastal waters of the Yellow Sea. Based on the observation of living and protargol and wet silver nitrate stained cells, the ciliates, belonging to the classes Spirotrichea and Oligohymenophorea, were identified as Cardiostomatella vermiformis (Kahl, 1928) Corliss, 1960, Parallelostrombidium paraellipticum Song et al., 2018, and Pleuronema paucisaetosum Pan et al., 2015. Both Parallelostrombidium paraellipticum and Pleuronema paucisaetosum were described only from their type localities, i.e., brackish water, suggesting that they tolerate a broad range of salinity, while Cardiostomatella is marine ciliate and seems to be cosmopolitan. These three species were reported for the first time in Korea. Brief descriptions, remarks to justify their identity and to compare the present isolates with similar taxa, and photomicrographs were provided for the three species.

  • Three cyclostomatous bryozoans from Korea belonging to the genera Bicrisia and Nevianipora are described here for the first time. The specimens collected from six localities of the South Sea and Jejudo Island during the period from 1981 to 2020 were observed. The three cyclostomatous bryozoans are Nevianipora pulcherrimoidea (Liu in Liu, Yin & Ma, 2001), N. rugatata (Liu in Liu, Yin & Ma, 2001), and Bicrisia edwardsiana (d'Orbigny, 1841). Nevianipora pulcherrimoidea and N. rugatata were previously found only from the South China Sea, whereas Bicrisia edwardsiana is widespread. As a result of this study, the Korean cyclostomatous bryozoans have increased to 20 species, 10 genera, and five families. Redescriptions and illustrations by scanning electron microscopy of the three species new to the Korean fauna are provided herein.

  • Some hydroid specimens were collected by SCUBA diving from 10-25 m deep at Uljin (Nagok) and Jejudo Island (Munseom, Beomseom, Supseom). Among the identified species, three species Eudendrium racemosum (Gmelin, 1791), Sertularella diaphana(Allman, 1886) and Schizotricha divergens Naumov, 1960 are new to the Korean fauna.
