Poly(ether imide) (PEI)-poly(dimethylsioxane) (PDMS) composite membranes and their modules were prepared, which are capable of selective $CO_2$ separation from the mixture gas. The gas flow rate, concentration, recovery ratio of $H_2$ and removal ratio of $CO_2$ outflowing by stage-cut were characterized at $25^{\circ}C$ and the constant pressure. In addition, to increase the recovery ratio of $H_2$, one stage, two stage series connection, and three stages series + parallel connection tests were carried out. When the stage-cut was 0.32 for the three stages connection operation, the concentration $H_2$ of the produced gas and the recovery ratio of $H_2$ was 97% and 85%, respectively. And also the removal ratio of $CO_2$ was 90% was obtained and the recycled gas concentration was similar with that of the feed gases.

Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations have been carried out to study how coolant injection conditions influence the cooling efficiency and projectile ejection performance in a mixture-gas ejection system (or gas-steam launch system). The 3D single-phase computational model was verified using a 1D model constructed with reference to the previous research and then a two-phase flow computation simulating coolant injection on to hot gas was performed using a DPM (Discrete Phase Model). As a result of varying the coolant flow rate and number of injection holes, cooling efficiency was improved when the number of injection holes were increased. In addition, the change of the coalescence frequency and spatial distribution of coolant droplets caused by the injection condition variation resulted in a change of the droplet diameter, affecting the evaporation rate of coolant. The evaporation was found to be a critical factor in the design optimization of the ejection system by suppressing the pressure drop while the temperature decreases inside the breech.

The combustion characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether (LPG-DME) compression ignition engine was investigated under homogeneous charge and stratified charge conditions. LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion flame region according to the injection timing of LPG. The hydrocarbon emission of stratified charge combustion was lower than that of homogeneous charge combustion. However, the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission of stratified charge combustion were slightly higher than those of the homogeneous charge region. The indicated mean effective pressure was reduced at stratified charge region, while it was almost same level as the homogeneous charge combustion region at diffusion combustion region. The start of combustion timing of the stratified charge combustion and diffusion combustion region were advanced compared to the homogeneous charge combustion. It attributed to the higher cetane number and mixture temperature distribution which locally stratified. However, the knock intensity was varied as the homogeneity of charge was increased.

In this paper a numerical study was performed for the effect of the wall curvature on the behaviors of fuel sprays impinging on the concave Surface. Actually, in the real diesel engines, a piston head has a curved shape for the purpose of the controlling the movement of fuel droplets and the mixture formation. For past decades, although many experimental and numerical works had been performed on the spray/wall impingement phenomena, the curvature effect of impinged wall was rarely investigated. The wall curvature affects on the behaviors of the secondary droplets generated by impingement and the concave wall obstructs the droplets to advance from the impinging site to outward. In present study, the simulation code was validated for the flat surface case and three cases of the different curvature were calculated and compared with the flat surface case for several parameters, such as the spray radius, the spray height and the position of vortex center of gas phase. The simulation results showed that the radial advance of the wall spray and the vortex is decreased with increasing the curvature. It was concluded that the curvature of the impinged wall significantly affects the behaviors of both the gas-phase and the droplet-phase.
The MELCOR code useful for a plant-specific hydrogen risk analysis has inevitable limitations in prediction of a turbulent flow of a hydrogen mixture. To investigate the accuracy of the hydrogen risk analysis by the MELCOR code, results for the turbulent gas behavior at pipe rupture accident were compared with CFX results which were verified by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) model. The postulated accident scenario was selected to be surge line failure induced by station blackout of an Optimized Power Reactor 1000 MWe (OPR1000). When the surge line failure occurred, the flow out of the surgeline was strongly turbulent, from which the MELCOR code predicted that a substantial amount of hydrogen could be released. Nevertheless, the results indicated nonflammable mixtures owing to the high steam concentration released before the failure. On the other hand, the CFX code solving the three-dimensional fluid dynamics by incorporating the turbulence closure model predicted that the flammable area continuously existed at the jet interface even in the rising hydrogen mixtures. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the MELCOR code, which has limitations in turbulence analysis, could underestimate the existence of local combustible gas at pipe rupture accident. This clear comparison between two codes can contribute to establishing a guideline for computational hydrogen risk analysis.

The use of palm oil and diesel blended with ethanol, known as a microemulsion biofuel, is gaining attention as an attractive renewable fuel for engines that may serve as a replacement for fossil-based fuels. The microemulsion biofuels can be formulated from the mixture of palm oil and diesel as the oil phase; ethanol as the polar phase; methyl oleate as the surfactant; alkanols as the cosurfactants. This study investigates the influence of the three cosurfactants on fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in a direct-injection (DI) diesel engine. The microemulsion biofuels along with neat diesel fuel, palm oil-diesel blends, and biodiesel-diesel blends were tested in a DI diesel engine at two engine loads without engine modification. The formulated microemulsion biofuels increased fuel consumption and gradually reduced the nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions and exhaust gas temperature; however, there was no significant difference in their carbon monoxide (CO) emissions when compared to those of diesel. Varying the carbon chain length of the cosurfactant demonstrated that the octanol-microemulsion fuel emitted lower CO and $NO_x$ emissions than the butanol- and decanol-microemulsion fuels. Thus, the microemulsion biofuels demonstrated competitive advantages as potential fuels for diesel engines because they reduced exhaust emissions.

We present three nuclear/hydrogen-related R&D activities being performed at KAIST: air-ingressed LOCA analysis code development, gas turbine analysis tool development, and hydrogen-production system analysis model development. The ICE numerical technique widely used for the safety analysis of water-reactors is successfully implemented into GAMMA, with which we solve the basic equations for continuity, momentum conservation, energy conservation of the gas mixture, and mass conservation of 6 species (He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O). GAMMA has been extensively validated using data from 14 test facilities. We developed a tool to predict the characteristics of HTGR helium turbines based on the throughflow calculation with a Newton-Raphson method that overcomes the weakness of the conventional method based on the successive iteration scheme. It is found that the current method reaches stable and quick convergence even under the off-normal condition with the same degree of accuracy. The dynamic equations for the distillation column of HI process are described with 4 material components involved in the HI process: H2O, HI, I2, H2. For the HI process we improved the Neumann model based on the NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquid) model. The improved Neumann model predicted a total pressure with 8.6% maximum relative deviation from the data and 2.5% mean relative deviation, and liquid-liquid-separation with 9.52% maximum relative deviation from the data.

This study is aimed to investigate changes of combustion characteristics and heat efficiency when syngas from gasification process using low-rank fuel such as waste and/or biomass is applied partially to an industrial boiler. An experimental study on syngas co-combustion was performed in a 0.7 MW (1 ton steam/hr) water tube boiler using heavy oil as a main fuel. Three kinds of syngas were used as an alternative fuel: mixture gas of pure carbon monoxide and hydrogen, syngas of low calorific value generated from an air-blown gasification process, and syngas of high calorific value produced from an oxygen-blown gasification process. Effects of co-combustion ratio (0~20%) for each syngas on flue gas composition were investigated through syngas injection through the nozzles installed in the side wall of the boiler and measuring $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentrations in the flue gas. When syngas co-combustion was applied, injected syngas was observed to be burned completely and NOx concentration was decreased because nitrogen-containing-heavy oil was partially replaced by the syngas. However, heat efficiency of the boiler was observed to be decreased due to inert compounds in the syngas and the more significant decrease was found when syngas of lower calorific value was used. However, the decrease of the efficiency was under 10% of the heat replacement by syngas.

Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) silicon dioxide thin films have many applications in semiconductor manufacturing such as inter-level dielectric and gate dielectric metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). Fundamental chemical reaction for the formation of SiO2 includes SiH4 and O2, but mixture of SiH4 and N2O is preferable because of lower hydrogen concentration in the deposited film [1]. It is also known that binding energy of N-N is higher than that of N-O, so the particle generation by molecular reaction can be reduced by reducing reactive nitrogen during the deposition process. However, nitrous oxide (N2O) gives rise to nitric oxide (NO) on reaction with oxygen atoms, which in turn reacts with ozone. NO became a greenhouse gas which is naturally occurred regulating of stratospheric ozone. In fact, it takes global warming effect about 300 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO2). Industries regard that N2O is inevitable for their device fabrication; however, it is worthwhile to develop a marginable nitrous oxide free process for university lab classes considering educational and environmental purpose. In this paper, we developed environmental friendly and material cost efficient SiO2 deposition process by substituting N2O with O2 targeting university hands-on laboratory course. Experiment was performed by two level statistical design of experiment (DOE) with three process parameters including RF power, susceptor temperature, and oxygen gas flow. Responses of interests to optimize the process were deposition rate, film uniformity, surface roughness, and electrical dielectric property. We observed some power like particle formation on wafer in some experiment, and we postulate that the thermal and electrical energy to dissociate gas molecule was relatively lower than other runs. However, we were able to find a marginable process region with less than 3% uniformity requirement in our process optimization goal. Surface roughness measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) presented some evidence of the agglomeration of silane related particles, and the result was still satisfactory for the purpose of this research. This newly developed SiO2 deposition process is currently under verification with repeated experimental run on 4 inches wafer, and it will be adopted to Semiconductor Material and Process course offered in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Myongji University from spring semester in 2012.
