This study has been designed to elucidate the petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Taeheung-ri lava in southeastern Jeju Island. The lava is divided into the alkaline basalt and tholeiitic basalt. More than 4 layers of tholeiitic basalt are overlain by layers of alkaline basalt. Compared with alkaline basalt, tholeiitic basalt has lower contents of $K_2O$, $P_2O_5$, Ba and Ta, but slight higher contents of $SiO_2$ and CaO. The contents of Ba and Rb of all basalts are enriched, but those of Ni and Cr are depleted compared with primitive mantle compositions. All basalts show inclined chondrite-normalized REE patterns with LREE enriched more than HREE and alkaline basalt has relatively higher. The basalts of this study area are plotted in the field of within plate basalt on the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagram. Tholeiitic basalt has higher ratios of Zr/Nb, Y/Nb, and $Al_2O_3/P_2O_5$ than alkaline basalt. Both tholeiitic and alkaline basalt are similar in their K/Ba ratios. The geochemical data suggest that the parental magma of both basalts might be produced by different degrees of partial melting of similar source mantle. The tholeiitic basalt formed by higher degree of partial melting than the alkaline basalt.
This study reports petrography and geochemical characteristics of the basalt lava flows in Seongsan-Ilchulbong area, the easternpart of Jeju island, Korea, to understand the evolutionary processes of magma. Basalt lavas are classified into the Pyoseon-ri basalt and the Seongsan-ri basalt. The Pyoseon-ri basalt is dark-gray colored with many vescicles, and mainly consists of olivine, feldspar and rarely of clinopyroxene as phenocrysts. The Seongsan-ri basalt is largely aphanitic basalt and bright-gray colored, divided into two lava-flow units: lower lava flow (B1) and upper lava flow (B2) by the intercalated yellowish lapillistone and paleosol. The lavas plotted into sub-alkaline tholeiitic basalt and alkaline basalt series. The tholeiitic basalts have characteristically higher $SiO_2,\;FeO^T$, and CaO contents, but lower $TiO_2,\;K_2O,\;P_2O_5$ and other incompatible elements compared to the alkali basalts. The tholeiitic basalts have higher $SiO_2$ to the same MgO contents than the alkalic basalts. The contents of Ni, Cr, and MgO show a strong positive correlation, which indicates that low-MgO phases like plagioclase and titanomagnetite were important during the differentiation of magma. The contents of incompatible elements against that of Th show a strong positive correlation. The chondrite-nomalized REE patterns of tholeiitic and alkalic basalts are subparallel each other. LREEs contents of the former are lower than, but HREEs contents are similar to the latter. They both are similar to their K/Ba ratios. The primitive-mantle normalized spider diagram demonstrates that the contents of Ba and Th of all basaltic magma are enriched, and yet Cr, Ni are depleted. The tholeiitic and alkalic basalts may be originated from a different degree of the partial melting of the same mantle material source, and one shows a higher degree of the partial melting than the other.
This study was intended to elucidate the petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Someori Basalt in the Udo monogenetic volcano, eastern Jeju Island. The Someori basalts consist of plagioclase, olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and ilmenite. The Someori basalts are plotted into subalkali rock series on the TAS diagram, and belong to tholeiitic basalts in the diagram of alkali index against to Al₂O₃ contents. The basalts belong to tholeiitic rock series, having normative quartz (less than 3.9%) + hypersthene + diopside.

Petrological, paleomagnetic, geomorphological and structural studies on the southern part of, so called, Chugaryeong rift valley, have been carried out in order to clarify the nature of the rift valley. Three stages of volcanic activities characterized by Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and tholeiitic and andesitic basalt of Cretaceous age(?), and Jongok Quaternary olivine basalt occurred along the Dongducheon fault line. Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks distributed in the central part of the studied area consist of rhyodacite, acidic tuff and tuff breccia, which are bounded by Dongsong fault on the east and Daegwangri fault on the west. The Jongok basalt differs from those of Ulrung and Jeju islands in mineralogy, chemical composition and differentiation. Jongok basalt distributed along the Hantan river dilineates the vesicles curved toward downstream direction and increment of numbers and thickness of lava flow toward upstream direction. These facts suggest that lava flowed from upstream side of the river. Rectangular drainage patterns also support the presence of the Dongducheon, Pocheon, Wangsukcheon and Kyonggang faults which were previously known. LANDSAT image, however, does not show any lineaments which could be counted as a graben or rift valley. Displacement of Precambrian quartzite and Jurassic Daedong supergroup along the southwestern extension of the Dongducheon fault shows the right lateral movement. The Paleomagnetic study of the tholeiitic and andesitic basalts from Baegeuri, Jangtanri and Tonghyeonri located at 2. 3km east, 0km east, and 1.5km west of Dongducheon fault respectively shows that their VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) being to intermediate geomagnetic field of short duration which suggests that they formed in almost same period. Mean VGP of Jongok basalt is located 82.4N and 80.6E. This is in good coincidence with worldwide VGP of Plio-Pleistocene indicating that Jongok basalt was extruded during Plio-Pleistocene epoch, and suggesting that the studied area has been tectonically stable since then. From the present study, the tectonic episode of the region is concluded as following three stages. 1. The 1st period is worked by the Daebo orogeny of Jurassic during which granodiorite was intruded in Precambrian basement. 2. The 2nd period is the time when right lateral strike-slip fault of NNE-SSW direction was formed probably during late Cretaceous to Paleogene and the Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and the older basalts were extruded. 3. The 3rd period is the time when the fault was rejuvenated during Pliocene or Pleistocene accompanied by the eruption of Jongok basalt. As a conclusion, geologic structure of the studied area is rather fault line valley than graben or rift valley, which is formed by differential erosion along the Dongducheon fault suggesting a continuation of the Sikhote-Alin fault. The volcanic rocks including the Jijangbong acidic rocks, tholeiitic-andesitic basalt and olivine basalt are associated with this fault line.
The volcanic lavas in the Janggi area are plotted on basalt, basaltic andesite and andesite field (SiO$_2$; 48-61 wt.%) in the TAS diagram and belong to subalkaline series. Nineteen chenmical analyses of lavas show two distinct differentiation trends; tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. Calc-alkaline basaltic andesites composed of plagioclase and two-pyroxenes (cpx, opx) in their phenocrysts. Tholeiitics basaltic lavas can be classified into two sub-types. The one is porphyritic basalts composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and olivine phenocryst, and the other is aphyric basalt and more evolved lavas (aphyric basaltic andesite) with the same mineral phases. Incompatible elements and REE patterns show the enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. This characteristics indicate that these lavas are evolved from the magmas related to subduction. Howeverm calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas show that slightly higher enrichment of LILE and the depletion of HFSE than those of tholeiitic basaltic lavas. On the tectonic discriminant diagram such as Ba/Th and La/Th ratios, calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas belong to orogenic medium to high-K suites, whereas tholeiitic basaltic lavas belong to medium-K suites and MORB. On the other diagram, such as La/Yb vs. Th/Yb, the volcanic lavas in the study area plotted in the field of oceanic arc basalt. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are located in more prinitive environment than calc-alkaline andesitic lavas.
Udo is the site of a short-lived monogenetic submarine volcanic vent which builts basaltic clastic deposits below sea level, by early Surtseyan-type explosive eruption and later effusive lava eruptions. Mineral assemblage, major and trace element chemistry indicate that the Someori sub-alkaline lava flows were related to the WPTB(within plate tholeiitic basalt) rather than IAT(island-arc tholeiite) and that the geotectonic regime of Korean Peninsula went away from the subduction zone after the Later Miocene.
Geochemical and Sm-Nd isotopic results are reported for amphibolite of the Muju area, Ryeongnam massif. Major and trace element data analyzed indicate that the parental rock of the Muju amphibolite is tholeiitic basalt. The Sm-Nd amphibole-WR-plagioclase data define an isochron corresponding to $1766{\pm}121Ma$ ($1{\sigma}$) (MSWD=1.10) with an initial ratio of $0.51032{\pm}15$. We interpret this age as a metamorphic age of the Muju amphibolite. Tectonic discrimination diagrams clearly fail when they are applied to the Muju amphibolite probably due to compositional variations resulting from crustal contamination and/or degrees of partial melting.
Petrological and chemical studies of Precambrian dikes in the southern Lake Superior region were conducted with the objects of evaluating magma source and constraining models for the paleo-tectonic environment. Forty-six samples were analyzed for major, trace, and rare earth elements. Chemical data of the studied dikes are typical of continental tholeiites and showing iron-enrichment fractionation trend. With wallrock contamination carefully evaluated, a series of tectonic discriminating methods utilizing immobile trace elements indicate that the source magma was a high-Ti tholeiitic basalt similar to present-day T-type MORB. Effect of chemical contamination from wallrock assimilation accmulates with increasing differentiation. Evolved rocks show LREE enriched patterns and have enhanced levels of LIL elements (e.g., Rb, K, Ba, Th), but low levels of high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, P, Ti) with respect to their neighboring elements. It is suggested from this study that this enrichment possibly due to a combination of a feature inherited from the subcontinental lithosphere and crustal contamination. Geochemical signatures of these rocks are distinctively different from those of arc-related volcanics. Comparisons with chemistries of modern magmas show a pattern of overlap between Within-plate and ocean-floor characteristics, and chemical signatures of these rocks favor a model of intrusion into a crustal environment undergoing lithospheric attenuation.
Southwestern contact zone of the Boeun granodiorite occurs near the thrust fault between the Ogcheon Group and Majeonri Limestone Formation. Ogcheon Group, metasediments composed of the Munjuri Formation, Changri Formation, and unconformably overlying Hwanggangri Formation, belongs to greenschist facies of regional metamorphism accompanied with deformation of two fold axes, $N10^{\circ}E$ and $N45-65^{\circ}E$ directions. Basic metamorphic rocks occurring in the Changri and Limestone Formations are the meta-basalts and meta-diabases of tholeiitic basalt series. The meta-basalts intruded in the Changri Formation as sills, whereas the meta-diabases in the Changri and Limestone Formations as stocks in appearance. They are considered to have emplaced before the formation of two fold axes and related with the thrust fault, based on the geologic setting of the area. The metamorphic facies are identified to be greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-basalt, and epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-diabases. It is interpreted that such a variety of facies was related from the combination of earlier deuteric alteration and later regional metamorphism. The metasediments in southwestern contact zont of the Boeun granodiorite which is a product of later syntectonic intrusion of middle Jurassic in age, show pyroxene-hornfels facies near the contact and amphibole-horenfels facies away from the contact to the mineral zoning in the contact metamorphic aureole of the Limestone Formation, based on the paragenetic analysis of mineral assemblages. The Limestone in the area appears to be considerably $SiO_2-CaO-MgO-CO_2-H_2O$ can be adopted to evaluate equilibrium conditions of the mineral assemblages in each mineral zone. It is revealed that a temperature gradient was existed accross the contact aureole ranging from the higher igneous side to lower sedimentary side, whereas no clear trend of $XCO_2$ variation appears but high mole fraction. The tremolite diopside-quartz-calcite assemblages occurs in common through the most mineral zones of contact aureole that is in good agreement with the equivalent reaction curve which extends over a wide range of $T-XCO_2$ conditions.
The Precambrian amphibolites in the central Gyeonggi massif, Yangsuri, Gyeonggido and southeastern Okcheon metamophic belt, Mungyeonggun, Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea, were studied on the geochemical characteristics of major and trace elements, and discussed petrogenetically and geotectonically. The characteristics of major elements of the amphibolites in these study areas are igeous origin such as tholeiitic-, subalkaline and alkaline basalt. Geotectonic distinction diagrams of trace elements such as Ti-Zr-Y and Zr-Nb-Y show basaltic igneous activity of island arc and mid ocean ridge environment at central Gyunggi massif, and within plate environment at southeastern Okcheon metamorphic belt. This result shows that genetic environments of study areas are different. Especially, origin of amphibolites in central Gyeonggi massif is similar with that of western Gyeonggi massif but different with the amphibolites of Chuncheon area. Genetic environment estimated of fractional crystallization of plagioclase has no particular effect on the origin of magma because value of LREE is higher than that of HREE and Eu anomaly definitely don't be exposed.
