  • When pipe components made of carbon steel in nuclear, fossil, and industry are exposed to flowing fluid, wall thinning caused by FAC(flow accelerated corrosion) can be generated and eventually ruptured at the portion of pressure boundary. A study to identify the locations generating local wall thinning and to disclose turbulence coefficient related to the local wall thinning was performed. Experiment and numerical analyses for tee of down scaled piping components were performed and the results were compared. In particular, flow visualization experiment which was used alkali metallic salt was performed to find actual location of local wall thinning inside tee components. To disclose the relationship between turbulence coefficients and local wall thinning, numerical analyses were performed for tee components. The turbulence coefficients based on the numerical analyses were compared with the local wall thinning based on the measured data. From the comparison of the results, the vertical flow velocity component(Vr) flowing to the wall after separating in the wall due to the geometrical configuration and colliding with the wall directly at an angle of some degree was analogous to the configuration of local wall thinning.

  • This paper proposes an effective fingerprint identification system with hardware block for thinning stage processing of a verification algorithm based on minutiae with 39% occupation of 32-bit RISC microprocessor cycle. Each step of a fingerprint algorithm is analyzed based on FPGA and ARMulator. This paper designs an effective hardware scheme for thinning stage processing using the Verilog-HDL in $160{\times}192$ pixel array. The ZS algorithm is applied for a thinning stage. The logic is also synthesized in $0.35{\mu}m$ 4-metal CMOS process. The layout is performed based on an auto placement-routing and post-simulation is performed in logic level. The result is compared with a conventional one.

  • The reduction of pipe-thickness induced by flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is one of the most serious problems on the maintenance of piping system in nuclear power plants (NNP). If the thickness of a pipe component is reduced below the critical level, it cannot sustain pressure and consequently results in leakage or rupture. For this reason, wall thinning by FAC has been inspected in secondary side piping systems in NPPs. In this research Round Robin Test (RRT) was conducted to verify confidence of wall thinning measurement system in NPP. 12 inspectors from 3 companies participated and 23 specimens were used according to standard practice in RRT. The gage R&R analysis was introduced in regard to repeatability and reproducibility that are affected to measurement system errors. Confidence intervals of thickness measurement system were obtained.

  • Pipe wall thinning in the secondary piping system of a nuclear power plant is currently a major problem that typically affects the safety and reliability of the nuclear power plant directly. Regular in-service inspections are carried out to manage the piping system only during the overhaul. Online thickness monitoring is necessary to avoid abrupt breakage due to wall thinning. To this end, a transducer that can withstand a high-temperature environment and should be installed under the insulation layer. We propose a thin plate type of embedded ultrasonic transducer based on magnetostriction. The transducer was designed and fabricated to measure the thickness of a pipe under a high-temperature condition. A number of experimental results confirmed the validity of the present transducer.

  • In an automatic fingerprint recognition system, a thinning process after binarization is commonly used. However it gives rise to spurs and holes often causing many spurious minutiae. Thus, more elaborate postprocessing is urgently needed to remove such spurious minutiae. To overcome this problem, we present a method of extracting minutiae based on horizontal and vertical run-length encoding from a binary fingerprint image without thinning process. Experimental results show that the proposed method for extracting minutiae is fairly reliable and fast, when il is compared to other method adopting a thinning process.

  • We propose an improvement method for a $\underline{G}ate$ $\underline{OX}ide(GOX)$ thinning at the edge of $\underline{S}hallow$ $\underline{T}rench$ $\underline{I}solation(STI)$, when STI is adopted to Dual Gate Oxide(DGOX) Process. In the case of SOC(System On-a-Chip), the DGOX process is usually used for realizing both a low and a high voltage parts in one chip. However, it is found that the severe GOX thinning occurs from at STI top edge region and a dent profile exists at the top edge of STI, when conventional DGOX and STI process carried out in high density device chip. In order to overcome this problem, a new DGOX process is tried in this study. And we are able to prevent the GOX thinning by H2 anneal, partially SiN liner skip, and a method which is merged a thick sidewall oxide(S/O) with a SiN pull-back process. Therefore, a good subthreshold characteristics without a double hump is obtained by the prevention of a GOX thinning and a deep dent profile.

  • Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods that are capable of detecting the wall thinning and defects through insulation and cladding sheets are necessary. In this study we developed a Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) system to detect wall thinning of ferro magnetic steel pipes covered with 95 mm thick fiber glass thermal insulator and shielded with aluminum plate of thickness 0.4 mm. In order to confirm the thickness change due to wall thinning, two different sensors, a hall sensor and a search coil sensor were used as a detecting element. In both the cases, the experimental data indicates a considerable change in the detected pulse corresponding to the change in sample thickness. The thickness of the tube was made to change such as 2.5 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm from the inner surface to simulate wall thinning. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was calculated using window approach and the results were summarized which shows a clear identification of thickness change in the test specimen by comparing the magnitude spectra.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of thinning on changes in stand characteristics and understory vegetation in a silvopasture practiced Japanese larch plantation in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University, Korea. Three different thinning intensities (64%, 35%, and control) were applied. Before and after thinning, the understory plant species increased its number from 48 (7 tree species, 7 shrubs species, 28 herbaceous species, and 6 woody climbers) to 100 (11 tree species, 15 shrub species, 67 herbaceous species, and 7 woody climbers). Thinning made plants invade easily on the forest floor, and plot A (325 stems/ha) had much higher number of undersory species than those Of plot B (575 stems/ha) and control plot (1,150 stems/ha). In three years after thinning, understory aboveground biomass (kg/ha) of herbs were 523 for control, 1,230 for plot B, and 1,288 for plot A. The canopy coverage had remarkable influence on the understory biomass production, resulting in relatively small amount of herbage production on control plot. The differences were statistically significant between thinned plots and unthinned plot, but there were no significant differences among the thinned plots (p<0.05).

  • Geographic Information System(GIS) which facilitates efficient storage and retrieval of geographic information is very useful tools. It is of extreme importance to develop automated vectorizing system as input method for GIS, because it takes a large amount of time and effort in constructing a GIS. In all kinds of map processed by GIS, contour line map specially takes a large amount of effort. In this paper we have considered an optimal thinning algorithm for the contour line vectorizing in the GIS. Based on the experimental results, it has been proved that thinning algorithm using the connection value is most excellent algorithm in the similarity and connectivity.

  • The objective of this study was to develop thinning effect analysis model (TEAM) using individual-tree distance-independent growth model of Pinus koraiensis Stands. The TEAM was designed to analyze thinning effects associated with such thinning prescriptions as the number, timing, intensity, and method of thinnings. To testing TEAM application, stand growth effects were compared with seven scenarios according to thinning prescription plan. In the results, it was possible to estimate the number of trees, height, volume with diameter (DBH) class of individual trees, and average diameter growth, height growth, the number of trees and volume growth per ha of stands. The result of sensitivity analysis on one Pinus koraiensis stand, it was not sure to expect the much more volume at the rotation age by stand density control applying thinning prescription. In the case of thinning, total yield volume has much more $40{\sim}75m^3$ per ha, within 5 cm in average diameter growth and within 1 m in average height growth than thats of non-thinning over increasing stand age. TEAM, as decision making support system, can be used for selecting the thinning prescription trial and determining one of some thinning prescription plan in different site specific stand environments.
