  • A majority of infrastructures has been deteriorated over time. Therefore, it is very important to verify the quality of construction, and the level of structural deterioration in existing structures, to ensure their safety and functionality. Many researchers have studied non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to identify structural problems in existing structures. The impact echo technique is one of the widely used NDT techniques. The impact echo technique has several inherent problems, including the difficulties in P-wave velocity evaluation due to inhomogeneous concrete properties, deterioration of evaluation accuracy where multiple reflection boundaries exist, and the influence of the receiver location in evaluating the thickness of the tested structures. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose an enhanced impact echo technique that can reduce the aforementioned problems and develop a Virtual Instrument for the application via a thickness evaluation technique which has same technical background to find deterioration in concrete structures. In the proposed impact echo technique, transfer function from dual channel system analysis is used, and coherence is improved to achieve reliable data. Also an averaged signal -ensemble- is used to achieve more reliable results. From the analysis of transfer function, the thickness is effectively identified.

  • An experimental study on heat transfer and flow characteristics of a circular impinging jet on a flat plate has been carried out. Of particular interests are the effects of nozzle wall thickness and nozzle exit pressure. Experimental apparatus has been designed to view heating plate coated by TLC from the opposite side of the nozzle in order to measure heat transfer rates for cases of very small nozzle to plate spacings. A visualization study of jet flows has also been performed. As the nozzle wall thickness increases at small nozzle to plate spacings, the effect of mixing is inhibited due to the confinement caused by the finite nozzle wall, consequently, heat transfer rates have been decreased. At small nozzle to plate spacings, heat transfer rates and nozzle exit pressures are increased together, therefore, enhancement of heat transfer at small nozzle to plate spacings should be considered in conjunction with the need of more fan power to generate the same Reynolds numbers.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.

  • In this paper, a series of repeated load tests were carried out on a 150 mm diameter plate simulative of vehicle passes, to demonstrate the benefits of soil-rubber shred mixture in decreasing the soil surface settlement of road embankment. The results show that the efficiency of rubber reinforcement is significantly a function of the rubber content, thickness of rubber-soil mixture and soil cap thickness over the mixture. Minimum surface settlement is provided by 2.5% of rubber in rubber-soil mixture, the thickness of mixture layer and soil cap of 0.5 times the loading surface diameter, giving values of 0.32-0.68 times those obtained in the unreinforced system for low and high values of amplitude of repeated load. In this installation, in contrast with unreinforced bed that shows unstable response, the rate of enhancement in settlement decreases significantly as the number of loading cycles increase and system behaves resiliently without undergoing plastic deformation. The findings encourage the use of rubber shreds obtained from non-reusable tires as a viable material in road works.

  • In order to process materials such as engineering plastics, which are difficult to mold due to their high strength compared to conventional polymer materials, it is necessary to improve the hardness and strength of parts such as screws and barrels of injection equipment in extrusion system. High-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process is well known for its contribution on enhancement of surface properties. Thus in this study, using the HVOF process, WC coating layers of different thicknesses were bonded to the surface of S30C substrate by controlling the movement speed of the spray nozzle and each property was evaluated to decide the optimization condition. Through the results, the thickness of WC coating layer increased from 0 to 200 ㎛ maximum, along with the decrement of nozzle movement speed and the surface hardness get increased. Especially, the coated layer with the thickness over 180 ㎛ under the nozzle speed 500 mm/s had high hardness than thinner layer. In addition, the amount of wear consumed per unit time was also significantly reduced due to the formation of the coating layer.

  • Recently, the finger vein recognition based on NIR and CCD sensor camera is investigating the technology to identify a personal using by biometrics. The performance difference of finger vein recognition is generated according to methods that are to separate the vein and background from noises such as finger thickness, ambient light, skin temperature, etc. To improve these problems, in this study, we are proposing the methods for rotation, ROI extraction, and enhancement of vein image captured by NIR LED and CCD camera, and were evaluated performances of these methods. In results of the experiment, the accuracy of the proposed method for image rotation and ROI extraction was 99.8%. And the proposed filter bank method in vein enhancement has shown better performance than retinex algorithm. The proposed method for results of these experimentations will provide better recognition rate when applied to the preprocessing of finger vein recognition.

  • TFT-LCD consists of LCD panel on the top, circuit unit on the side and BLU on the bottom. The recent development issues of BLU-dependent TFT-LCD have been power consumption minimization, slimmerization and size maximization. As a result of this trend, LED is adopted as BLU instead of CCFL to increase brightness and to reduce thickness. In liquid crystal displays, the light efficiency is below 10% due to the loss of light in the path from a light source to an LCD panel and presence of absorptive polarizer. This low efficiency results in low brightness and high power consumption. One way to circumvent this situation is to use a reflective polarizer between backlight units and LCD panels. Since a nano-wire grid polarizer has been known as a reflective polarizer, an idea was proposed that it can be used for the enhancement of the brightness of LCD. The use of reflective polarizing film is increasing as edge type LED TV and 3D TV markets are growing. This study has been carried out to fabrication of the nano-wire grid polarizer(NWGP) and investigated the brightness enhancement of LCD through polarization recycling by placing a NWGP between an c and a backlight unit. NWGPs with a pitch of 200nm were fabricated using laser interference lithography and aluminum sputtering and wet etching. And The NWGP fabrication process was using by the UV imprinting and was applied to plastic PET film. In this case, the brightness of an LCD with NWGPs was 1.21 times higher than that without NWGPs due to polarization recycling.

  • When an active muscle is stretched, its steady-state isometric force following stretch is greater than that of a purely isometric contraction as the corresponding muscle length, referred to as force enhancement (FE). The purpose of this study was to investigate possible effects of muscle architecture on the FE. While subject performed maximal isometric dorsiflexion (REF) and isometric-stretch-isometric dorsiflexion (ECC) contractions, ankle joint angle and dorsiflexion torque using a dynamometer and electromyography of the tibialis anterior and the medical gastrocnemius muscles were measure. Simultaneously, real-time ultrasound images of the tibialis anterior were acquired. Regardless of the speed of stretch of the ECC contractions. the torques produced during the isometric phase following stretch ($37.3{\pm}1.5\;Nm$ ($10{\pm}3%$ FE) and $38.3{\pm}1.5$ ($12{\pm}3%$ FE) for the ECC contractions with $15^{\circ}$/s and $45^{\circ}$/s stretch speeds, respectively) were greater than those of the REF contractions ($34.5{\pm}2.5\;Nm$). Moreover, the amount of FE was found to be stretch speed dependent. Angles of pennation ($\alpha$) during the isometric phase following stretch were the same for the REF ($15{\pm}1^{\circ}$) and the ECC ($14{\pm}1^{\circ}$(LS), $15{\pm}1^{\circ}$(LF)). During the same phase, muscle thicknesses were the same ($14.9{\pm}0.6$, and $14.9{\pm}0.5\;mm$ for the REF and the ECC contractions, respectively). For a large limb muscle, the tibialis anterior muscle, a similar amount of force enhancement was observed as did for other human skeletal muscles. Architectural variables, pennation angle and thickness, were not systematically different between the REF and ECC contractions when FE occurred. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that muscle architecture may have little influence on the production of FE.

  • (Na, K) $NbO_3$ thick film was successfully achieved using a sol-gel coating process with the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to a metal alkoxide solution. The transparent coating solution, mixed with Nb:PVP = 1:1 in a molar ration, was synthesized by evaporating the solvent to over 62.5 wt%. Additive PVP increased the viscosity of the solution so that the coating thickness could be enhanced. The thickness of the (Na, K) $NbO_3$ film assisted by PVP was ca. 320 nm at the time of deposition; this value is four times thicker than that of the sample fabricated without PVP. Also, due to PVP binding with the OH groups of the metal alkoxide, the condensation reaction in the film was suppressed. The crystalline size of the (Na, K) $NbO_3$ films assisted by PVP was ca. 15 nm smaller than that of the film fabricated without PVP. After the sintering process at $700^{\circ}C$, the (Na, K) $NbO_3$ films were mainly composed of randomly oriented (Na, K) $NbO_3$ phase of perovskite crystal structure, including a somewhat secondary phase of $K_2Nb_4O_{11}$. However, by adding PVP, the content of the secondary phase became quite smaller than that of the sample without PVP. It was thought that the addition of PVP might have the effect of restraining the loss of potassium and that PVP could hold metalloxane by strong hydrogen bonding before complete decomposition. Therefore, the film thickness of the (Na, K) $NbO_3$ films could be considerably advanced and made more crack-free by the addition of PVP.

  • Flow structure and mixing characteristics in a micro combustor with a multi-hole baffle were numerically studied using the Reynolds stress model. The multi-hole baffle has geometrical features to produce multiple three-dimensional vortices inside combustion chamber. When the thickness of the baffle's geometrical factors changes, variations of vortical structures occur variously. Among these vortices, the vortex generated from the fuel stream exerts a critical influence on the mixing enhancement. The three-dimensional vortical structure, in its development state, was strongly dependent on the baffle thickness. In particular, as the baffle thickness decreases to values less than the diameter of the fuel hole, the jet stream in baffle holes changes from the parabolic to saddleback profile type. The sizes of recirculation zones inside combustion chamber and the mixing state were closely affected by the structure of the jet streams.
