  • The effect of the cobalt content on the thermodynamic and, heat and mass transfer properties of the $MmNi_{5-y}B_{y-z}C_z(y=0.5{\sim}1.5,\;z=0.5)$hydrogen storage alloys has been studied systematically. The P-C isotherms curves show that with increasing cobalt content in the alloys, the plateau pressure of the hydrogen absorption and desorption and enthalpy(${\Delta}H$) increases steeply and the plateau region becomes flat, while entropy(${\Delta}S$) decreases. Also at the constant cobalt content the hydrogen transfer rate decreases with the reaction temperature, while the initial reaction kinetics increases. But the initial reaction with hydrogen completes within 1min, although the reaction proceeds about 30minutes thereafter.

  • Cationic surfactant can be used as cosmetics and chemical dispersants. The variation of critical micelle concentration (CMC) with temperature over the range $40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ for N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide was measured by drop methods. Thermodynamic quantities such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity for micellization of N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide in water were calculated by fourth-degree polynominal equation In the result, free energy change was decreased generally by the increment of temperature.

  • This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation. From this temperature, we could get arc voltage distribution. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

  • Marine transportation industry is undergoing a number of problems. Some of these problems are associated with conventional marine fuel-oils. Many researchers have showed that fuel-oil is considered as the main component that causes both environmental and economic problems, especially with the continuous rising of fuel cost. This paper investigates the capability of using natural gas and hydrogen as alternative fuel instead of diesel oil for marine gas turbine, the effect of the alternative fuel on gas turbine thermodynamic performance and the employed mathematical model. The results showed that since the natural gas is categorized as hydrocarbon fuel, the thermodynamic performance of the gas turbine cycle using the natural gas was found to be close to the diesel case performance. The gas turbine thermal efficiency was found to be 1% less in the case of hydrogen compared to the original case of diesel.

  • The mechanism of interaction of two drugs viz., amoxicillin and cloxacillin with bovine serum albumin has been investigated using fluorescence absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The quenching mechanism of fluorescence of bovine serum albumin by amoxicillin and cloxacillin was discussed. The binding sites number n and apparent binding constant Kwere measured by fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures were calculated. The distance r between donor (bovine serum albumin) and acceptor (amoxicillin and cloxacillin) was obtained according to Forster theory of non-radiative energy transfer. The effect of common ions on binding constant was also investigated. The results of synchronous fluorescence spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and circular dichroism of BSA in presence of amoxicillin and cloxacillin show that the conformation of bovine serum albumin changed

  • In this paper, with water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture which utilizes solar energy as mid temperature range evaporator heat source, a thermodynamic analysis was performed to provide design data for a double-effect absorption heating system. A comparative study of the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture against the water-LiBr pair was conducted by a computer simulation. The computer simulation is based on mass, material and heat balance equations for each part of the system. Coefficients of performance and flow ratios for effects of different operating temperatures are investigated. It is found that the heating COP is higher for the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture than for the water-LiBr pair, and FR is lower for the former.

  • Charged carbon clusters which are formed by the gas activation are suggested to be responsible for the formation of the metastable diamond film. The number of carbon atoms in the cluster that can reverse the stability between diamond and graphite by the capillary effect increases sensitively with increasing the surface energy ratio of graphite to diamond. The gas activation process produces charges such as electrons and ions, which are energetically the strong heterogeneous nucleation sites for the supersaturated carbon vapor, leading to the formation of the charged clusters. Once the carbon clusters are charged, the surface energy of diamond can be reduced by the electrical double layer while that of graphite cannot because diamond is dielectric and graphite is conducting. The unusual phenomena observed in the chemical vapor deposition diamond process can be successfully approached by the charged cluster model. These phenomena include the diamond deposition with the simultaneous graphite etching, which is known as the thermodynamic paradox and the preferential formation of diamond on the convex edge, which is against the well-established concept of the heterogeneous nucleation.

  • The stabilities of the charge transfer complexes of pentamethyl benzene with iodine in n-hexane have been investigated by UV-spectrophotometric measurements at 25, 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$ up to 1600 bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex formation was increased with pressure while being decreased with temperature raising. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of the complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift at higher pressure, the blue-shift at higher temperature, and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength have been discussed by means of thermodynamic functions. In comparison with the results in the previous studies, the absolute values of ${\Delta}$V at each temperature were increased with the number of methyl groups of polymethyl benzene. However, it can be seen that both ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S show extreme behaviors in durene near atmospheric pressure but they are negatively increased with the number of methyl groups near 1600 bar. This order of the thermodynamic parameters may be a measure of the relative basicities of polymethyl benzenes toward iodine under each pressure, and these phenomena are explained in terms of a positive inductive effect and a steric hindrance effect of the polymethyl benzene molecule.

  • The turbulent mixing of a kerosene/liquid oxygen coaxial swirl injector under supercritical pressures have been numerically investigated. Kerosene surrogate models are proposed for the kerosene thermodynamic properties. Turbulent numerical model is based on LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with real-fluid transport and thermodynamics over the entire pressure range; Soave modification of Redlich-Kwong equation of state, Chung's model for viscosity/conductivity, and Fuller's theorem for diffusivity to take account Takahashi's compressible effect. The effect of operating pressure on thermodynamic properties and mixing dynamics inside an injector and a combustion chamber are investigated. Power spectral densities of pressure fluctuations in the injector under various chamber pressure are analyzed.

  • Inter-relationship between the Hammett equation and the linear enthalpy-entropy effect has been discussed by deriving a new set of equations; ${\Delta}{\Delata}H^{\neq}=a{\sigma}+b{\Delta}{\Delta}S^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}{\Delta}F^{\neq}=a{sigma}+(b-T){\Delta}{\Delta}S^{\neq}$ where a = -1.36p. Theoretical analysis show that the Hammett, Leffler and Brown equations are special limited forms of these general equations. A necessary and sufficient test of substituent effect can thus be provided by the plot of $({\Delta}{\Delta}H^{\neq}-a{\sigma)$ versus ${\Delta}{\Delta}S^{\neq}$.
