In order to examine the thermal properties of the wire materials, we analyzed the shrinkage, the expansion and the form transformation, the surface structure according to the thermal deterioration temperature through the testing method for a heating shrinkage of Korean Industrial Standard(KS C 3004). For IV(600V grade polyvinyl chloride insulated wires), we measured the shrinkage and the expansion rate, analyzed the surface structure using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). In the result of this experiment, the shrinkage rate of IV 2.0mm covering was high in comparison with other wires. As the deterioration temperature rises gradually, the covering is molten and harden.
To examine the physical properties of POY through the microstructure control, the crystal structure such as the crystallinity, the crystallite size, the orientation, the shrinkage, the tensile properties, and the thermal stress of POY(80/48, SD) were examined at different draw ratios and annealing temperatures. From the examination following conclusions were obtained : 1. The crystallinity was more effected by the heat setting temperature than by the draw ratio. The increasing rate was greatest at the heat setting temperature range of $170~190^\circ{C}$. 2. The crystallite size perpendicular to the fiber axis was more effected by the annealing temperature at lower draw ratios. On the other hand, the crystal and amorphous orientations were more effected by the heat setting at higher draw ratios. 3. The boiling shrinkage did not change significantly, but the total shrinkage showed 13% at the draw ratio 1.9 and the heat setting temperature $170^\circ{C}$. 4. The maximum thermal stress increased with increasing the draw ratio and decreasing the heat setting temperature in the temperature range of $170~210^\circ{C}$. At the draw ratio 1.9 and the heat setting temperature $170^\circ{C}$, the maximum thermal stress found was 1.1gf/d. 5. In the heat setting temperature above $170^\circ{C}$ after the drawing, the crystallinity, the crystallite size, the orientation, and the strength increased with increasing temperature, but the shrinkage and the maximum thermal stress decreased with increasing temperature.
Functionally gradient materials(FGM), which have the continuous or stepwise variation in a composition and microstructure, are being noticed as the material that solves problems caused by heterogeneous interface of coating or joining. And these materials also expect new functions occured by gradient composition itself. Therefore, to examine possibility of thermal barrier materials, TZP/Mo·FGM and TZP/Ni·FGM were fabricated by sintering method. As to the sintered specimens, sintering shrinkage, relative density and Vicker's hardness in each composition were examined. The phenomena due to the difference of sintering shrinkage velocity during sintering process and the thermal stress induced through differences of thermal expansion coefficient in FGM were discussed. And the structure changes at interface and microsturcture of FGM were investigated. As a results, the difference of shrinkage between ceramic and metal was about 14% in TZP/Mo and 7% in TZP/Ni. The relative density and hardness were considerably influenced by metal content changes. Owing to unbalance of sintering shrinkage velocity between ceramic and metal, various sintering defects were occured. To control these sintering defects and thermal stress, gradient composition of FGM should be narrow. The microstructure changes of FGM depended on the ceramic or metal volume percents and were analogous to the theoretical design.
As the autoclave process progresses in a given cure cycle, residual stress in the composite product is induced by cure shrinkage of the resin. As a result, It generates the thermal deformation such as spring-in and warpage, and the inaccuracy of the final product increases. It is important to predict thermal deformation in aerospace parts which require precise fabrication. The research has been done on predicting and grasping curing process of composite material. In this study, the cure mechanism of composite materials according to the process is predicted through finite element analysis, and the effect of cure shrinkage on thermal deformation generated by the process is analyzed.
This study is mainly interested in roundness of a circular moonpool structure in FPSO. Because this structure needs abrasion-resistance on inner wall, we should do buttering widely and deeply by using Inconel. But a general buttering can cause a severe distortion at structures. If someone can analyze the roundness by thermal distortion under Inconel over-lay, an erection policy can be established. In this study, shrinkage methodology by designed stress-strain curve was used and the result allowed deciding an appropriate block size.
The additive manufacturing technology, also called 3D printing, is growing fast. There are several methods for 3D printing. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) type 3D printing is the most popular method because it is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, it can be used for printing various thermoplastic materials. However, it contains the cooling of layered road and causes thermal shrinkage. Thermal shrinkage should be controlled to obtain high-quality products. In this study, temperature distribution and cooling behavior of a layered road with cooling are studied through computer simulation. The thermal shrinkage of the layered road was simulated using the calculated temperature distribution with time. Shape variation of the layered road was predicted as cooling proceeded. Stress between the bed and the layered road was also predicted. This stress was considered as the detaching stress of the layered road from the bed. The simulations were performed for various thermal conductivities and temperatures of the layered road, bed temperature, and chamber temperature of a 3D printer. The simulation results provide detailed information about the layered road for FDM type 3D printing under operational conditions.
Molding shrinkage is one of the problems to be solved in conventional injection molding. Despite many trying-out has been to solve it, intrinsic cause of shrinkage such as orientation and thermal exchange between melt and mold has not been solved yet. For reducing shrinkage and residual stress on molding, injection compression molding process was invented. In this study, experiments about effects of injection compression molding's parameters on shrinkage of PMMA molding were conducted and compared with conventional injection molding's shrinkage. Before the injection compression molding experiment, molding shrinkage rate was predicted by analyzing pvT diagram and was compared with the results of experiment. The shrinkage rate of injection compression molding was lower than convention injection molding's one which was different from the predicted shrinkage. The reason was observed that the experimental mold was not a proper type for injection compression, flowing backward of melt into nozzle and unreasonable mechanism of injection molding machine.
For high performance and structural stability, application of high strength steel has continuously increased. However, the change of the base metal gives rise to problems with the accuracy management of the welded structure. It is attributed to the martensite phase transformation of the high strength low alloy steel weldment. The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and residual stress for the HY-100 weldment. In order to do it, high speed quenching dilatometer tests were performed to define a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) at the heating and cooling stage of HY-100 with various cooling rates. Uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element(FE) models with CTE were proposed to evaluate the effect of the martensite phase transformation on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses at the weldment. FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. Based on the results of extensive FEA and experiments, the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and longitudinal shrinkage force at the HY-100 weldment were formulated as the function of welding heat input/in-plane rigidity and welding heat input respectively.

The heat of hydration of cement the causes the internal temperature rise at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures such as a mat-slab of nuclear reactor building or a dam or a large footing. As the result of the temperature rise and restraint of foundation, the thermal stress enough to induce concrete cracks can occur. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction stages in order to control the cracks developed in massive concrete structures. And, more creep and shrinkage take place at elevated temperatures in young concrete, Thus the effect of creep and shrinkage must be considered for checking the safety and servicebility(crack, durability and leakage).
Small clear specimens of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. were used to measure shrinkage and thermal conductivity for the reasonable and effective use. All samples were conditioned to 18, 12, 5% moisture contents in a humidity chamber of 86, 66, 20% relative humidity(RH), respectively and room temperature(23℃) All specimens were conducted on the shrinkage and thermal conductivity test at each MCs. These processes(cycle) were repeated three times. The radial and tangential shrinkages of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. decreased at each level of MCs, with the increasing cycles. The radial and tangential shrinkages increased as the specific gravity(on oven-dry weight and volume basis) increased. Thermal conductivities of the radial and tangential direction of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. increased at each levels of MCs, with increasing cycles. Good correlations were obtained between shrinkages and thermal conductivities of radial and tangential direction, and specific gravity (on oven-dry weight and oven-dry volume basis) and MC.
