Recently, automotive air conditioning system manufacturers have been made a great efforts on the system compactness and high efficiency. This growing interest comes improvements in evaporator thermal performance, one of the most important factors affecting the performance of air conditioning system. In order to improve design of compact type evaporator, this study executes performs to develop a computer program for evaporator thermal performance prediction of automotive air conditioning system. The brief summaries of this study are as follows: 1) To predict the overall thermal performance of serpentine type evaporator, the new simulating method is developed. 2) The calculations are performed as functions of oil mass concentration and refrigerant two-phase distribution at inlet manifold of evaporator. 3) The validity of this simulating program is confirmed by comparing the predicted thermal performance results to experimental results of practical available evaporator. 4) Based on these results, suggestions are made to improve the thermal performance of evaporator.
The latest UK Climate Projections (UKCP09) show that mean daily temperatures will increase everywhere in the United Kingdom. This will significantly affect the thermal and energy performance of the current building stock. This study examines an institutional fully glazed building and looks into the changes in the cooling loads and thermal comfort of the occupants during the occupied hours of the non-heating period. Furthermore, it investigates the effect of relative humidity (RH) on thermal comfort. The Design Summer Year (DSY) 2003 for London Heathrow has been used as a baseline for this study and the DSY 2050s High Emissions scenario was used to examine the performance of the building under future weather conditions. Results show a 21% increase of the cooling loads between the two examined scenarios. Thermal comfort appears to be slightly improved during the months of May and September and marginally worsen during the summer months. Results of the simulation show that a relative humidity control at 40% can improve the thermal comfort for 53% of the occupied hours. A comparison of the thermal comfort performance during the hottest week of the year, shows that when the relative humidity control is applied thermal comfort performance of the 2050s is similar or better compared to the thermal comfort performance under the baseline.
To evaluate performance of concentrating solar cookers, we have designed and constructed parabolic solar cooker. Tests are carried out to define the performance characteristic of concentrating cookers under the ambient conditions. Performance and test of solar cooker were followed the international standard procedure that was proposed at the Third World Conference on solar cooking Stagnation temperature and water heating test are carried out to determine the maximum temperature attained by cooker and evaluate the thermal performance of the cooker, respectively.
Photovoltaic-thermal(PVT) collectors are a combination of photovoltaic modules with solar thermal collectors, forming one device that receives solar radiation and produces electricity and heat simultaneously. The PVT collectors can produce more energy per unit surface area than side by side PV modules and solar thermal collectors. There are two types of water type PVT collectors, depending on the existence of glass cover over PV module; glass-covered(glazed) PVT module, which produces relatively more thermal energy but has lower electrical yield, and uncovered(unglazed) PVT module, which has relatively lower thermal energy with somewhat higher electrical performance. In this paper, the experimental performance of two types of the water-based PVT combined collectors, glazed and unglazed, was analyzed. The electrical and thermal performances of the PVT combined collectors were measured in outdoor conditions, and the results were compared.

This study is to draw thermal property data during long-term aging, by testing the thermal conductivity of building insulation materials in Korea. The thermal resistance of extruded insulation within 3 days from manufacture performed well over the KS Standard. After 50 to 110 days, however, the thermal performance had deteriorated to the level of the KS standard. Eventually, after 4,000 days, the insulation performance had deteriorated to about 25.4~41.8% of the initial performance. Therefore, this research will be utilized as a reference for thermal properties during long-term aging, in order to improve standards and regulations related to building insulation materials.
PVT (Photovoltaic/thermal) system is technology that combines PV and solar thermal collector to produce and use both solar heat and electricity. PVT has the advantage that the energy production per unit area is higher than any single use of PV or solar thermal energy systems because it can produce and use heat and electricity simultaneously. Air-type PVT collectors use air as the heat transfer medium, and the air flow rate and flow pattern are important factors affecting the performance of the PVT collector. In this study, a new air-type PVT collector with improved thermal performance was designed and manufactured. And then thermal and electrical performance and characteristics of air-type PVT collector were analyzed through experiments. For the thermal performance analysis of the PVT collector, the experiment was conducted under the test conditions of ISO 9806:2017 and the electrical performance was analyzed under the same conditions. As a result, the thermal efficiency increased to 26~45% as the inlet flow rate of PVT collector increased from $60{\sim}200m^3/h$. Also, it was confirmed that the air-type PVT collector prevents the PV surface temperature rise according to the operating conditions.
The photovoltaic/thermal collectors (PV/T collectors) combine the solar thermal collector and photovoltaic modules. They can produce thermal energy in the form of hot air or hot water, and converts solar radiation into electricity. The collecctors can improve the electrical performance of PV modules as the heat from the PV module carried away by the thermal part of the system keeping temperatures lower. The basic water cooled PVT collector has metallic water pipes attached to the back of a PV collector. There are main parameters affecting the performance (electrical and thermal) of PVT collectors. This paper analyzed the experimental performance of glazed water PVT module, considering the parameters of solar radiation, inlet water temperature and ambient temperature. It found that solar radiation is the dominant factor for the electrical performance of the collector, and for the thermal performance the inlet water temperature and ambient temperature appeared to be more related.

Geothermal heat pump(GHP) systems use vertical borehole heat exchangers to transfer heat to and from the surrounding ground via a heat carrier fluid that circulates between the borehole and the heat pump. An Important feature associated with design parameters and system performance is the local thermal resistances between the heat carrier flow channels in the borehole and the surrounding ground. This paper deals with the in-situ experimental determination of the effective thermal properties of the ground. The recorded thermal responses together with the line-source theory are used to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, and the steady-state borehole thermal resistance. In addition, this paper compares the experimental borehole resistance with the results from the different empirical and theoretical relations to evaluate this resistance. Further, the performance simulation of a GHP system with vertical borehole heat exchangers was conducted to analyze the effect of the borehole thermal resistance on the system performance.

Photovoltaic-thermal(PVT) collectors are a combination of photovoltaic modules with solar thermal collectors, forming one device that receives solar radiation and produces electricity and heat simultaneously. Of various PV modules, dye-sensitized solar cell(DSC) is a relatively new type of solar cell technology that can transmit light while they can generate electricity. With this aspect, DSC can be applied into solar thermal collectors. The object of this study is to evaluate the thermal performance of PVT collector with DSC. The thermal performance of the DSC PVT combind collector was measured in outdoor conditions with the solar radiation of over $700W/m^2$. In this study, the PVT collector with the 30% light transmittance of DSC achieved its thermal efficiency of about 36%.

This research is to measure and analyze the thermal performance of the apartment structure and to evaluate and establish standards of thermal insulation defect in order to make the basic data necessary for determining the degree of the thermal performance degradation and for repairing and reinforcing the exterior wall of the existing apartment. Furthermore, it is to predict the part of occurrence of the thermal bridge and condensation at the apartment building structure. On the other one hand, it is also to analyze the degree of thermal insulation performance according to the standards of thermal insulation and elapsed time, through the analysis by the workability of concrete.
