In recent years, matrix-free laser desorption ionization (LDI) for mass spectrometry of thermally labile molecules has been an important research subject in the pursuit of new ionization methods to serve as alternatives to the conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) method. While many recent studies have reported successful LDI of thermally labile molecules from various surfaces, mostly from surfaces with nanostructures, understanding of what drives the LDI process still requires further study. This article briefly reviews the thermal aspects involved in the LDI mechanism, which can be characterized as rapid surface heating. The thermal mechanism was supported by observed LDI and postsource decay (PSD) of peptide ions produced from flat surfaces with special thermal properties including amorphous Si (a-Si) and tungsten silicide ($WSi_x$). In addition, the concept of rapid surface heating further suggests a practical strategy for the preparation of LDI sample plates, which allows us to choose various surface materials including crystalline Si (c-Si) and Au tailorable to specific applications.
A neutron detector, in general, can not be utilized as the thermal neutron detecting chamber in the nuclear power reactor, especially P.W.R. due to the characteristics of high temperature, high pressure and high neutron flux in a reactor vessel. We have performed an experiment to detect the thermal neutrons at 400.deg. C and high flux of thermal neutron in a power reactor. Coating boron-10 on the aluminium plates by means of surface diffusion method at 600.deg. C for 5 hours in an electric furace, also we made a typical chamber which was compensated ionization chamber filled with free air as an ionization gas. It was checked the chamber characteristics in the TRIGA MARK-II Reactor at the power level from zero to 250KW. The chamber current showed a perfect linear increase to power increase. However, many variation of the measured current were observed within the power of 50KW.
This study explored the feasibility of using a carburization technique to enhance the ion intensity of isotopic analysis of ultra-trace levels of uranium using thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Prior to fixing uranium samples on TIMS filaments, graphite powder suspended in nitric acid was deposited on rhenium filaments. We observed an enhancement of $^{238}U^+$ intensity by a factor of two when carburization was used, and were able to roughly optimize the amount of graphite powder necessary for carburization. The positive shift in heating current when evaporating filaments upon carburization implies that uranium was chemically altered by carburization, when compared to normal fixation processes. The good agreement between our method and known standards down to an ultra-trace level shows that the proposed technique can be applied to isotopic uranium analysis down to abundances of ~10 pg.
In this paper, the ionization characteristics of noble gases are studied numerically behind strong shock waves. As a first step, the equilibrium ionization mechanism of noble gases is modeled in wide ranges of temperature and pressure. As a next step the equilibrium ionization model is coupled with fluid dynamic equations to analyze the local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) ionization process at high temperature and pressure conditions behind the strong imploding shock waves. The ionization characteristics of xenon gas is studied in a wide range of test conditions with thermal radiation effects. Hence, the results give optimal conditions of maximum ionization and radiation behind the imploding shock waves.

We report observation of laser desorption/ionization (LDI) of peptides from flat surfaces of tungsten silicide ($WSi_2$). In contrast to MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization) and SALDI (surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization) mass spectrometry, this study did not utilize any matrices and surface nanostructures. In this work, LDI on $WSi_2$ surfaces is demonstrated to cover a mass range up to 1,600 Da (somatostatin; monoisotopic mass = 1637.9 Da). In addition, it exhibited a high sensitivity, which could detect peptides, which could detect peptides of low femtomole levels (20 fmol for angiotensin II). The observed LDI process was discussed to be largely thermal, more specifically, due to laser-induced surface heating that is most likely promoted by the low thermal diffusivity (${\kappa}$) of $WSi_2$ substrate.
An improved voltage modulation method (VMM) was used to control the heat release and adsorption properties of the adsorbent. In this work, the voltage and flux modulation methods were considered under unified experimental conditions of dissociative surface ionization (SI) of polyatomic organic molecules, the criteria were found when under VMM conditions the current relaxation of SI carries information about the kinetic properties of thermal desorption of ionizable dissociation particles arriving on the surface of polyatomic molecules. Conditions were found under which the relaxation of the ionic current in the flux modulation method is determined by the kinetics of the heterogeneous dissociation reaction of the original polyatomic molecules. The values of the thermal desorption rate constant K+ and the activation energy E+ obtained with VMM for desorption of (CH3)2NCH+2 ions with m/z 58 by adsorption of imipramine and amitriptyline molecules agree well with each other and with the results for the desorption of the same ions by adsorption of other molecules. This confirms one of the basic conditions for the equilibrium process SI - the a degree (β coefficient) of the same particles SI on the same emitter surface is the same and does not depend on the way these particles are formed on the emitter surface.
By using thermal desorption/gas chromatograph/flame ionization detector(TD/GC/FID), this study was carried out to evalute an accuracy and a precision on Benzene(B), Toluene(T), o-Xylene(X) analysis in an industrial hygiene laboratory. Limits of detection of TD/GC/FID on B, T, X were showed 13.75ng/sample or less. For the accuracy of the method by concentration levels, overall bias was showed 7.7% as an absolute value, and the pooled coefficient of variation showed 3.51%. For the precision on repeatability of peak area and retention time between within-run and between-run of analytical system, it is showed the results of within-run gave better than those of between-run. Also the accuracy by sorbents(Tenax TA and Chromosorb 106)was evaluated, and the precision on reproducibility between MDHS72 and this study was compared. It is showed it is possible for TD/GC/FID to evaluate accurately B, T, X concentration levels of less than 1ppm at indoor or outdoor of workplaces in Korea.
There are at least three effects of the non-thermal particle bombardment on the solar atmosphere: (1) non-thermal ionization and excitation; (2) proton-hydrogen charge exchange; (3) impact line polarization. Due to the non-thermal ionization and excitation effects of electron bombardments in flares, H$\alpha$ line is widely broadened and shows a strong central reversal. Significant enhancements at the line wings of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ are also predicted. In the case of proton bombardment, less strong broadening and no large central reversal are expected. However, due to proton-hydrogen charge exchange, the enhancements at the red wings of Ly$\alpha$ and especially of Ly$\beta$ lines at the early impulsive phase of flares are significant. Electron beam can also in some cases generates visible and UV continuum emission in white-light flares. However, at the onset phase, a negative 'black' flare may appear in several seconds, due to the increase of the $H^-$ opacity. The impact polarization of atomic lines can provide complementary information on the energetic particles, the energy transport and deposit in the solar chromosphere. New results of spectropolarimetric analysis for the major flare on July 23, 2002 are also given in the paper.
In this paper, reduction characteristics of the ac flashover voltage in the horizontal air gap of sphere-sphere/needle-needle electrode system were investigated when the combustion flame was present near the high-voltage electrodes. The voltage and current waveforms were measured, when the flashover is occurred, in order to examine the flashover polarity by flame. The reduction characteristics of ac flashover voltage were discussed with the thermal ionization process, the relative air density and the deflection phenomena in the shape of flames that changed by the corona wind and coulomb\`s force. As the results of an experimental investigation, It was found that the reduction of flashover voltages in sphere-sphere system, in comparison with the no-flame case, are 79.9 [%] for k=0, 82.9 [%] for k=0.5, 87.5 [%] for k=1.0, 85.0 [%] for h=0 [cm], 40.8 [%] for h=5 [cm] and 28.2 [%] for h=9 [cm] when ac voltage is applied.
Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) was used to determine the concentration and isotope ratio of uranium contained in samples of soil and groundwater collected from Korea. Quantification of uranium in ground water samples was performed by isotope dilution mass spectrometry. A series of chemical treatment processes, including chemical separation using extraction chromatography, was applied to the soil samples to extract the uranium. No treatments other than filtration were applied to the groundwater samples. Isotopic analyses by TIMS showed that the isotope ratios of uranium in both the soil and water samples were indistinguishable from those of naturally abundant uranium. The concentration of uranium in the groundwater samples was within the U.S. acceptable standards for drinking water. These results demonstrate the utility of TIMS for monitoring uranium in environmental samples with high analytical reliability.
